Discussion Worst stp song? (Core - SLDD)
In my opinion every stp song has smth to offer. I excluded 2010 because theres some rough songs on there. Id say wet my bed is the worst song but that doesnt really count. The only other song I cpuld think of as being their worst is Coma. Coma is far from a bad song, but i think it exemplifies everything thats wrong with stp. For starters, its trying suoer hard to appeal to the new metal scene, and it just comes off as a copycat which is always rough. It has a really good dean solo, but the rest of the song is fairly annoying. I love SLDD but it unfortunately probably does have their worst song.

Wet My Bed is only there to prepare you for the all-out-assault that is Crackerman. If they had their choice, it would most likely never been two tracks. They perfectly balance eachother.

Yeah, you can’t judge interstitial tracks like that. They’re not meant to be “regular songs” at all.

LOVE Coma, but to each their own.
They have very few bad songs, IMO. Hard pressed to think of one. The one I skip the most on Core is Naked Sunday (it's not a bad song, I just don't love the vocal stylings on it). I tend to skip Pretty Penny on Purple too; it's a lovely song, but it feels like filler to me, but sometimes when I'm in the mood, I enjoy it.
EDIT: adding the other albums leading up to SLDD:
Tiny Music - nothing. A perfect album, to me.
No 4 - MC5. A cool song in its own right, but the "no you don't get it" gets old for me after awhile.
SLDD - Typically Regeneration, even though I do really like that song, but have to be in a specific mood.

Naked Sunday is the only song I skip on Core, too. I don’t dislike it, but just don’t love it as much as the other songs.

i might get flamed for saying this but I think Down is one of their weaker songs. just doesn't feel particularly inspired to me

I agree not that it’s a bad song but for a 1st single I thought it was not a great choice. Love sour girl so much more personally.

I don't skip anything on Core, Purple, or Tiny Music, but...and I really hate to say this because I used to genuinely adore the record....I find most of No. 4 very one note and extremely forgettable. That's not to say it's a bad record, it's obviously not, but aside from Sour Girl, I Got You, and Atlanta it all feels very one note and missing the big dynamic swings of both previous records and Shangri-La.

While nothing memorsble Coma isn't nu metal - desperately trying to appeal to nu metal is like Mtallica's St. Anger

I can't think of anything rn because all the Wet My Bed hate is killing me lol. That + Crackerman = perfection (imho) 💜

I think you’re wrong about Coma but I’m also not saying it deserves to get more love. I just think you’ve set an expectation for it that you shouldn’t.
Every album after an artists’ first commercially successful album tries to follow a system. You need a couple of radio releases (usually the best songs), a closet banger, a few good B sides for the fans, and then a handful of not so great songs or artist efforts to play around. A whole album of great songs does not sell more albums. They all shouldn’t be the best music.
(The first album gets exception here because it contains the songs an artist has spent many years developing. Second albums are usually more hastily assembled since the production hurdle is lower)
So Core is off the table here. We talked about Purple the other day. Tiny Music followed this system well. It’s well documented that SLDD was meant to be more artsy with the Malibu house setup. Still follows the system. For me, Coma is the non-radio release banger. Not too far of a stretch from their usual stuff but still a good song. I’m a fan.
The point is that some of these songs aren’t supposed to be good or bad. They’re meant to fill an album or to fulfill the artist. That’s it. So it’s not fair to set a standard to a song as a fan if it fulfills the album goal. I will absolutely hold that standard to radio releases.

In my time exploring the albums this year, I find all their songs tend to grow on me with each listen. There’s always a nifty solo or melody somewhere that ties the song together and makes it worth my while. The one song I’m not into is Plush- partly bcuz I’ve heard it a bajillion times, mostly though it just doesn’t ‘swing’. Sludgy like the PJ and soundgarden records I also don’t listen to. Oddly enough it’s kind of a homage to the bossa nova music they and I both love, had no idea til I read it though.

Plush is really unassuming at first. I think what helps the most is listening to it like you're super lost and alone. To me thats what the song feels like.

Core - Naked Sunday, just not my style. Not bad, but doesn’t really stand out like all the other songs on core
Purple - kitchenware and candy bars, not terrible but I don’t know. Feels completely out of place, and it’s too clean, lacks anything unique.
Tiny Music - I’d say nothing because this album is just perfect but then I’ll put adhesive only because it’s just too depressing. All the other songs are really poppy, really quick and make you wanna breakdance but adhesive is just too depressing.
No4 - nothing. Another perfect album.

Great take! Agreed.

What’s your take?

u/Hot-Valuable-6421 2d ago
Pretty much identical to yours! Lol.
Naked Sunday isn't a bad song, just not the level of the others and kind of always been a bit of a skip for me.
Kitchenware is a bit lethargic and depressing for me much like Adhesive.
Can't think of any on #4 that I really don't like

Its has a cool little melody and adds color to the album.

I think really the only misses for me (at least with Scott) is the majority of the 2010 album (minus cinnamon)

In the original run from Core to Shangri-La, I’m not sure there are any songs I actively dislike. Every album has a few I like less than the others, but not enough to be negative about any one of them.
I suppose I’m not always in the mood for Army Ants once the beautiful intro is over. I sometimes find that verse vocal grating. MC5 is the same phenomenon.
Also, I love Naked Sunday for what Scott and Dean are doing, but I think Eric is doing way too much and never locks in with Robert as a result. That’s like the only STP instance I can think of where the rhythmic skeleton just doesn’t work for me.

I actually like every track from those first 5 albums. If I had to pick a weakest track though I’d probably go with Too Cool Queenie.

would easily be something off 4 which was just unimaginative uncreative undynamic regression and boring power chord formula. They were done by that point. I really only consider STP to be Core, Purple, and Tiny Music. I would take most any song from the first three albums to any one song off 4. maybe an exception or 2.

u/GtrGenius 2d ago
Those are the holy trinity. But 4 still has some great music. I can't even listen to the 2001 album.

Where the River Goes
Army Ants
Ride the Cliche
No Way Out
A Song for Sleeping
Fast as I Can
Not really bad songs but probably my least favorite. Personally I think Fast as I Can is their worst song.

where the river goes and army ants are some of my favorites, ain’t that interesting

u/Don_Kieballs Tiny Music 2d ago
I’d say personally Ride the Cliche. Tiny Music is my favorite album by them but that song is my only skip. I like the music quite a bit but Scott’s vocal and melody really lack for me on this one. No knock on Scott because he’s brilliant on the rest of that album.
To each their own of course.

By each album:
Naked Sunday
Army Ants
Tumble in the Rough
Pruno
Coma
I don't think there are any bad songs on the first four albums, though I do consider SLDD the weakest and prefer Peace from 2010, Butterfly from 2018, and Perdida.

I don't really dislike anything by STP, but I wish I could like SLDD. Maybe I will eventually.

Surely not a popular opinion, but other than Wet My Bed, Sin and Naked Sunday are my least favorite songs and Core is my least favorite of the Weiland albums

I can admit when a band I love has songs that suck. No need to lie about it and say they’re all good. With that, Art School Girl, Naked Sunday, Wet My Bed, Pretty Penny, and Days of The Week all SUCK.

Naked Sunday; I worked at a Zoo and whenever the monkeys would hump anything, I always heard this song play in my head.

Least fav is Too Cool Queenie. It's still got a groove and the music is good but I find the lyrics to be corny.

Technically Wet My Bed is the worst but even then its an interesting intro to Crackerman and a fun improvised thing.

u/80s_baby90s_mademe 2d ago
Anything that came out after purple sucks, there a couple songs on tiny music that are ok but idek what happened to this band. Im gonna guess it was the heroin. Thats pretty much the case for most bands though, put out 2 albums and then they just start going all over the place. Some dont even make it to the second album before they suck.

Fuck this premise. It’s like sitting around and spending time deciding which of my children I love the least.
