Yeah that's like the back in the day colloquialism

I know this because of the coloured vendors that try to sell avo's by saying "Avokadopeer maak jou hare meer". I've been hearing it my entire life and so has my mother. Seeing it spelled out makes me wonder why don't we just call it an Avokado??

Coloured vendors are something else. A guy tried to sell me flowers at a robot back in the day. No, thanks, I said. Koop dit vir jou vrou, he said. Sy het my gelos, I said. OK koop dit vir die girlfriend, he said. Ek het nie een nie, I said. Then he spotted the police radio in my cop car. KOOP DIT VIR DIE FOKKEN CHARGE OFFICE, he shouted.

A colleague also got approached by a flower seller in Cape Town saying “Blommetjies vir die mo'tjie by die huis?" Colleague said no, he’s far from home and here alone, and got told “Koop ‘it vi' die hand!"

We used to just call it an avokado. Very rarely said the whole word.

u/InspectorNo1173 7d ago

Even that is too long for me. I just call it an avo

u/_chubbybee06_ 7d ago

I mean we do but they asked what the Afrikaans word was not what we call it. Coz we just call then avo's, we don't even say avokado. Just avo, but like they were asking for the word in Afrikaans not the word that Afrikaans people use

It was also an avocado pear in English for a while. In lots of languages too. I think because it was a novel fruit to most of the world and they wanted to make it feel less new and scary

Thats just a blatant false advertisement! I've been eating advokadepere my whole life, and I'm bleskop SF (soos fok)

Reading some comments, be fair, some of these names are common across languages. Pomme de terre is French, aartappel Afrikaans and both literally translate into English as earth apple.

But Henry, I love it when you talk foreign

Another terrible name is for a Gem Squash which is sometimes called a Lemoenpampoen which is "Orangepumpkin" - and not orange the colour, orange the fruit (lemoen) and already lemoen vs suurlemoen (orange vs lemon) is a ridiculous naming scheme.

Sometimes the Afrikaans word doesn't even make sense even as a nickname 😂

14

u/RupertHermano 7d ago

First time I hear this. A gem squash is a skorsie.

It's because it's the size of an orange...

and already lemoen vs suurlemoen (orange vs lemon) is a ridiculous naming scheme.

This is a bit small-minded, just because it's different from English doesn't make it ridiculous.

FYI: Naranj/Orange were originally bitter fruit that made their way over land from India to Europe. Hundreds of years later after sweet citrus was developed in India, it was brought over by Portuguese traders to the Middle East and Mediterranean. In parts of Europe "orange" came to mean a sweet orange, but in other places bitter citrus is still called some variation of "naranj", and sweet oranges are called something like "porteghal" after the Portuguese. In other places they are sinaasappel/Apfelsine, ie "Chinese apples"

Someone commented botterpeer, and I like that. Butter pear.

Ek like bitter peer, oor sy botterige tekstuur.

u/Mysterious-Media-812 7d ago

My pa het dit altyd 'n prokureurspeer genoem.

u/CauliflowerFickle960 7d ago

In Nederland zeggen we avocado, maar krokodillenpeer neem ik graag over.

My pet peeve is Afrikaans people trying to make "fun" words for things that already have perfectly good Afrikaans words and thinking that it is soooo cute and quirky.

14

u/RipYourShirtOffForMe 7d ago

Or aglicizing a word to try and replace a perfectly fine afrikaans word. "Konsistensie" for "samestelling", or "adjektief" for "byvoeglike naamwoord".

u/_chubbybee06_ 7d ago

Some of us genuinely have trouble pronouncing some words, so we say them or make up words for them to the best of our ability without straying from the actual word too much, it then catches on and everyone says it. And Afrikaans is a very fun language as is so why not make it more fun? It's something we have to use EVERYDAY so why not make it enjoyable? Do you speak Afrikaans?

u/AntOnKnee78 5d ago

Knowing that Avocado was used as a euphemism to refer to testicles by the Nahuatl, and the frequent refering of crocodile due to its skin.

I present to you: Krokodilballe 🥑🐊

lol… That's my post.

Made it 3 yrs ago and the coloured community loved it

Also got a LOOOOOOOT of hate mail from the white folks for saying "stupid" (which tbf was probably the wrong choice of word)
