i use “i’ll go find my wife and tell her about this” and she uses “i’ll go find my husband, because he’s the one that pays for everything”

17

u/SummerGreen009 Jan 10 '26

Me too! I don't have a husband.

2

u/its_MrCuddles Jan 13 '26

I used the exact same excuse whilst being sold a hand treatment kit (it cost R2.5k for a lotion and a f*cking scrub!)

"Thanks just going to do other shopping first" ... Goes to look if it's cheaper on takealot 😂

u/Niwdalg_ Jan 09 '26

It so funny that we all know, once a customer says those words he's not coming back. 🤣🤣

This lady tried to sell me R2500 face wash, I think we all knew I wasn’t coming back. At that price, it better be as good as plastic surgery.

20

u/AwehiSsO Jan 10 '26

If I pay that for facewash it must keep my face clean for anything between a month and a year after each wash.

16

u/GrimmReapperrr Jan 10 '26

What!!! It must have been in a bottle with real gold

35

u/GrimmReapperrr Jan 09 '26

Maybe twice in my lifetime did I actually go back

10

u/PsychologicELD Jan 09 '26

Went bacl just last year... after 2 years👀

3

I go "YOH!", followed by repeating how much it is. Followed by a laugh and then a swift exit.

E.g. YOH! 5 THOU?! HEH HEEEEEE!

21

u/Weasle189 Jan 09 '26

I can hear this. Perfect reaction.

South African for "it's too expensive, looks slightly shit and I don't want it and If i do want it, I'll probably find it somewhere else cheaper or actually come back and buy it from you and suprise everyone"

20

u/Doctor_vile Jan 09 '26

My dad's line: "we'll come back tomorrow". We never do.

17

u/axcelmcalistor Jan 09 '26

I'm in sales, this is helping me and I'm finding it relatable

63

u/Fantom_Renegade Jan 09 '26

Nothing beats “ba nyela”

35

u/godfire_dragneel Jan 09 '26

"Ba re gafela"

16

u/yogirltutu Jan 09 '26

"Nahana feela, yoh." 🤣

5

u/LiquidVillian Jan 10 '26

These lines took me out 🤣

15

u/InspectorNo1173 Jan 09 '26

I know someone who says “Too much. I’ll come and get it at the closing down sale”

15

u/SonOfLaParka Jan 09 '26

Lol. I'll look around and when someone approaches me I'll tell them straight I'm just looking. They can judge all they want, don't be ashamed of your window shopping. They also do it.

11

u/Lil_mana_awesome Jan 09 '26

In Kenya it goes like; "Si mnafungua kesho pia?"

Translates to, "You're open tomorrow too, right?"

4

u/Alternative-You-1208 Jan 10 '26

I miss this about SA so much! I miss being able to go into a store, where they will treat you with respect, even if you declare that something is too expensive or you need to “ask your partner” or “come back later” 😭

Random story time for anyone who’s interested, or wants to remember/know why SA is such a friendly country:

The place where I live now is hugely materialistic and expensive. My young coworker is the daughter of the CEO of a HUGE luxury brand. For the record, she’s lovely and very down to earth.

I don’t want to doxx anyone, so let’s pretend her dad is the CEO of Louis Vuitton (the actual brand has a movie named after it).

The other day, she went into the Loewe store to buy some shoes she’d saved up for. As soon as she was in the store looking for the shoes in question, a shop assistant approached her. She assumed they were approaching her to assist. She was wrong.

The shop assistant kicked her out! Their “reason” was that she’s a “young poor-looking person who is loitering” 💀

It’s even worse if you’re someone who wants to browse or “come back later” in most stores here.

Moral of the story: You will never know racism or discrimination until you go to certain other places in the world. Sure, SA has its issues, but a lot of other countries are way worse and, scarily, it’s allowed to happen.

u/TheKyleBrah Jan 09 '26

Me: <Proceeds to Google Biopics named after Luxury Brands to narrow it down>

The devil wears it.

11

u/Ponza_99 Jan 10 '26

You'd be a great 30 seconds partner.

12

u/Skiumbra Jan 10 '26

I'm in South East Asia and can't go anywhere without the salespeople swarming me for that Tourist Money (which I don't have. I live here now. I just needed to buy shoes for work. Why would a tourist go to Bata)

9

u/tumblingmoose Conscientiotiously... and the best of my ability Jan 10 '26

That “why would a tourist go to Bata” had me laughing.. so true! 😆

9

u/GrimmReapperrr Jan 09 '26

Thats a shitty way to treat potential customers

5

u/GeneraIronwood Jan 10 '26

If I'm being pleasant: "I just want to look at some other options first."
If I'm not being pleasant: "Norrafok."

It's the "Ubuntu" in us. We don't like disappointing people I guess? 😂

8

u/Zangoma Durban Jan 10 '26

Because then there's no story, South Africans love telling stories, being hopeful and having a laugh all at once. Thats why this line of talking generally still persists when you have money 😆

6

u/Embarrassed-Dance746 Jan 10 '26

cause sometomes that doesn't just cut it for a salesperson hey..

1

u/GrimmReapperrr Jan 10 '26

Joh I havent had that experience in a long time. Where you feel like you being cornered into buying something. I dodge those shops for sure

4

u/Wintyness15 Jan 09 '26

I give them the 'Thanks! I'll be back' never to return! I wonder if staff play a game with other stores to see how many do the same xD

3

u/Cyph3rCT Jan 10 '26

Jassis, why you gotta call a guy out like that.

3

u/Hermank1 Jan 10 '26

I'll go ask the bank, she's got the cards

3

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

These days, i don't even try to be polite. My filter went on strike, like my wallet. So it usually goes "fokkit" or "I don't have body parts to sell. No thanks" or on occasion, I think out loud, "What do we say to debt? NOT TODAY

3

u/No-Elevator9931 Jan 10 '26

But the guys down there said it’s only (x) amount of rands, thank you,I will go to them 🤣

😆😆😆😆 SPOT ON!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

2

u/Professional-Age2414 Jan 10 '26

And then specific places will bump down the price and ask how much do you have?

2

u/burn_in_flames Western Cape Jan 10 '26

I use the "I'll need to confirm with the landlord" when it comes to contractors charging ridiculous prices... I am the landlord...

2

u/Agile_Author_7458 Jan 11 '26

I always say "Wow that's a reasonable price. Let me go around the mall and I'll come back just now."

And then I never return

2

u/Training-Farmer8476 Jan 11 '26

Just after the N1 mall opened in Goodwood they had "car guards" dressed in a very neat uniform, complete with purple waist jackets. The guards handed out business cards with their names on them to ensure that you end up paying the correct person when you leave. My wife and I parked and duly received our business card from Good enough, our guard. When we reached the store, however, we realized neither of us had cash or cards on us. Each having assumed the other remembered. So, back to the car we went, where we explained the predicament to Goodenough and promised to return in a few minutes to park in "his" block again. I could see that Goodenough had no faith in our story whatsoever, as he had heard this lie many many times before. Still, he took his business card back About ten minutes later we were back, parked in the same block where Goodenough awaited is with the biggest brightest smile ever. "Meneer, jy praat die waarheid" exclaimed the utterly surprised yet satisfied Goodenough.

2

u/Sora_Z Jan 12 '26

And the shop assistant already knows nah ah this guy isn't coming back. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

2

u/Upbeat-Opening-5130 Jan 09 '26

As someone who used to work in a retail clothing store.. please don’t do this, just be honest. False hope is awful and some of you try too hard to sound convincing that you’ll actually come back. Like why put on a whole act? I personally appreciated when a customer was straight up with me that they’re just browsing and wouldn’t be buying.

5

u/GrimmReapperrr Jan 10 '26

I think its kinda embarrassing cause it shows you dont have money to spend no matter what the price. We all know that most of us dont have money lying around but we also want to save face and try to downplay our broke-assness

3

u/Upbeat-Opening-5130 Jan 10 '26

I do understand… but it was embarrassing for me when I’d pack a pair of shoes or keep a parcel under the counter for someone because they’d say “I love it! Please keep it for me! I’ll come back before you close!!!” only to never pitch up again. For you it’s mildly embarrassing, for a salesperson the number of sales impacts their whole day. Yes I should’ve known they were lying, but like I’m saying, some people reeeeally play it up and convince you they’ll be back. That’s not saving face that’s just being scummy.

2

u/GrimmReapperrr Jan 10 '26

I dont think this applies to what the meme is about. Telling someone to keep it for you is totally different than just browsing, asking about the price and then say you will be back again. That would be a dick move and I can understand why you feel that way

1

u/Shainin_P Jan 26 '26

Hey, sometimes I actually mean it XD
