Melee Hi, this is Fly Amanita. AMA!

Evening,

I'm an Ice Climbers main in Melee who has been in the smash scene since 2007. I recently placed top 8 in EVO and have some other decent recent tourney performances as well. I could say more, but I figure it's better to let you ask about what you want to know instead of typing a fragmented mini-biography, so ask away!

edit: I still have a lot to respond to, but I'm exhausted, so I'll get on that in the morning.
edit: awake again and responding to more

Hey Fly, thanks for doing this! I look forward to reading your answers.

Some questions:

  1. How do I go about playing neutral game against the Ice Climbers as Marth? My neutral to punish conversions seem to be weak as well since stuff like dtilt > grab seems to not work out as well against ICs unless you hit Popo.
  2. Wobbles once told me that you can practice punishing Nana on a certain level CPU (because the DI/AI is the same?). What level is that do you know?
  3. Is there a common misconception about anything IC related that you would like to clear up?

There are a lot of different approaches to the neutral game that work. When I play Marth against ICs, I play a very dtilt-heavy game in which I stick near the ground a vast majority of the time. Dtilt is difficult for ICs to punish and they frequently need to use something like fair or blizzard to handle it. Other than that, I've played Marths that stick to side platforms a lot and descend with fairs occasionally, which can be difficult to deal with since ICs aren't great at approaching platforms, especially if they're not already below them. My main advice would be to lean towards the safer side of things and don't throw out stuff that's unsafe on shield unless you're very sure it will work.

Nana's AI is its own weird thing that is not particularly connected to any of the other AIs in the game as far as I know. If you want to practice punishing Nana, just grab a level 1 CPU ICs and practice on the girl herself.

There are a lot of million little things I could emphasize, but nothing too major comes to mind. I will say that Nana is much more predictable than people probably realize for the most part.
