Flame-haired Flamethrower of Truth You can laugh, we've the World Cup

Who says this line in the intro? It sounds kind of like Roy Keane but the context makes no sense?

I thought it was Keane, saying "you can laugh, that was the World Cup" and I thought it was from a Ken interview with Keane where Ken was not suitably serious about Saipan. Not sure if that actually what happened or just what I imagined.

Listened back - you're right. Then Googled that quote instead of what I said and it brought up a tweet from Ken with that exact line.

Mystery solved - one of those things that mildly annoyed me every day in the car but I never remember to find out.

This is it exactly. Keane was annoyed Ken laughed during a Saipan question.

You can laugh, that was the World Cup.

This is from Keane’s interview when he was Ipswich manager in the aftermath of the Henry handball. He was complaining about Saipan, again.

Thanks. You'd forget how raw Roy used to be in pressers before he became a caricature.

The caricature narrative really annoys me. You can see many times in his older interviews people think he's being serious when he has a glint in his eye.

Not to mention it's backed up by all his teammates that while he had a game face and knew when to be serious, he was always very funny in the dressing room.

By caricature I mean he's become an exaggerated version of himself - he's always had that sense of humour of being a grumpy fella etc, but on the Overlap etc it's like that episode of the Simpsons, "say the line, Bart".

A topic will come up and the others look at him expectantly, because it's part of the show now that he has to get super wound up about it and go off on a rant.

A running joke isn't the same thing as a caricature assuming you're pointing to things like "That's his job".

I mean he's become an exaggerated version of himself. The "say the line Bart" thing wasn't referring to a specific line, more like the role he has to assume in every conversation. Keane is playing a narrow character in a way that other pundits don't do as much.

I feel like he's reduced himself or been reduced to a caricature in a way that say, Jamie Carragher, Gary Lineker, Ian Wright etc aren't.

But how exactly do you know it's exaggerated version of himself? You don't know him.

His teammates have regularly said publicly that the public perception of Keane in the past was always exaggerated and that the Keane we've seen since he started doing the punditry is who he really is.

Would love if they listed out exactly what is said and where it is from for each audio bed. I know I am hearing some of them wrong but I say them in my head anyway.
For example one of the ones I repeat over and over is what sounds like an American football 1-1 interview and he says “s-x with haddaway”. No idea what is meant to be

Ken met the DJ Haddaway at a party or pub at a tournament (Euro 2012 maybe?) and at the end of the interview asks him "so what's next for Haddaway?". Think it was just so random they put it in the Ken on tour audiobed.

Just ask in here - plenty of day-1 fans still here. Most of us know the origin

What the hell is Murph saying in a weird voice about Meath? It appears in the "hurt them, kill them, injure them" audiobed and it's a hot key whenever Meath comes up in conversation. It appeared in Monday's Gaelic football pod.

Sounds like he's doing a silly accent but it always appears with an echoe-y sound quality, which makes it really hard to make out. I'm really just assuming it's about Meath based on the context it tends to be used in.

He's taking the mick out of some Meath guys he knew in the past. In fairness, he does a pretty good Meath accent. The "hurt them, kill them, injure them" interview was audiobed was from a COVID-period "The Player's Chair" with Meath great Liam Hayes, episode 2043.

Who says something like 'ya shorny(?) man' at the end of the intro?

That's Eamon Dunphy from an interview back around 2013, one of the early podcasts after they left Newstalk.

He spoke about an Ireland-England match when he was a kid, trying to climb in over the turnstiles and Johnny Giles and got very emotional.

Shoneen man.

Whilst we're on the topic of voices in the intro audio bed, who is the German (?) sounding man who says "ya, they have asked for that, really!" - or is it Blatter talking about Delaney's request to be the 33rd team in the 2010 WC.

It is that, yes.

I’ve heard that line in the intro for years and never knew the meaning. Thanks for taking the time to attach the wiki article

On another note — I was wondering where the quote "They never go home those boys" comes from

Wasn't that in the audio into (or outro?) for OTB when they were there, and the SC audio is altered to leave the OTB bit out? Sounds like Joe Duffy but I'm not sure that it is or what the context is.

What was the hot key about saudi arabia today in the tony bloom discussion?

3

u/Enjoys_A_Good_Shart 16d ago

Brenda Rodgers talking about how respectful people are in Saudi (when they're not beheading people that is)

I always thought it was 'You can laugh, they've the world cup.'

3

u/themagpie36 16d ago

It's "You can laugh, that was a world cup"

You're right!
