Determined to recover
Hi I'm 43 years old, in UK.
Been in and out of hospital since age 20.
I was very anti medicine and psychiatry for years but now I've come round to their necessity.
Determined to recover, with meds COMPLIANCE and get a job, maybe married etc.
Am I delusional to think like this?
Should I just roll over and accept defeat by now?

I mean if you commit to medication and therapy you're almost certainly going to be better than you are now

You go for it. Medication really is so helpful. Commit to it.

Keep at it - all your goals are possible. Lots of sleep and eat low carb, no substances.

Don't ever give up man. I've wanted to quit so many times. But life is like a cycle. Sometimes it'll suck, but then it gets better. Just like the seasons. Spring follows winter. People with this diagnosis are warriors. We keep fighting, even if things seem bleak. There are always solutions out there. Get a good psychiatrist, get into therapy. It's never too late

No you are thinking great. I've had this for 15 years and close to your age. The only way I've been able to live life and have a job and all of that is only because of meds. That is the only way I've been able to do anything. Without them I'd literally be dead. Congratulations here is to your new life.

I think your hope is a great thing to have.
Will it be linear - no
Will it be tricky - in places
Will I ever want to give up - possibly
Will it be worth it in the end - absolutely
Stick with it, recovery and finding a baseline has been one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. I’m sure that it will be for you to.

Hi friend I almost lost everything after a psychotic and then a depressive episode lasting almost two year. I was almost homeless and just lay in bed for months. This was seven years ago.
Today I am diagnosed medicated work and have a good and for filling life. And I am still improving :)
So no don't give up. You are already diagnosed and medicated so your already in a good starting place. Try to make small steps and don't focus on goals to much. One step after another (in the right direction) will get you far even if you fall down once and again.
One of the things in recovery is that you more or less are forced to reinvent yourself (I am currently at vs 3.0). That's though, but it also is an opportunity. Things you didn't like in your old version you can leave behind/you don't have to reclaim. Think about arrogance, envy, bad loser etc. And you can implement new features in your new personality, more patient, less dismissive, more kind...
Whith respect to medication/psychiatrists: You are medicated, but it might not be the most optimal combination of meds and dosages. So experiment with this under supervision of your psychiatrist. Some psychiatrist are very conservative about this, but advocate for yourself. (I suggest you use a mood tracker to monitor your mental and physical health. That way you can monitor the changes when you experiment with interventions).
One last thing about this condition and psychiatrists: This condition is going to be with you and make your life difficult all your life. And it is going to take constant vigilance and management every day, hour, minute of your life. It incurable. So if you get the feeling your psychiatrist thinks they are going to cure you, run away. Psychiatry in our DX means: What helps best, and what worked yesterday might not work today.
Good luck!

Stay determined friend. Don’t let it defeat you. Some days / months / years are harder than others - but keep going 🧡 all the very best
