Video Be safe out there!
A couple of things to say to San Diego road users:
It’s okay to say “sorry” if you cut someone off instead of just staring at them like a moron!
It’s okay to cruise in the right lane instead of camping in the passing lane!
It’s okay to miss your exit on the highway—just go the f*uck around!
It’s okay to miss a green light. Being 30 seconds late is better than gambling with other people’s lives!

Dashcam means it’s already a W for you. Even if he runs off or he is uninsured you’ll have the video to make your case

u/ongoldenwaves 19h ago
It's not really a win. Maybe in the short term but these assholes are why we have to pay so much in insurance. We really need crack downs on these people.
92
u/No_Beginning_6834 18h ago
In reality the stock market and ceo bonuses are why we have to pay so much. Their profits have been going up almost triple digit percents the last few years.
8
u/SUCKSTOBEYOUNURD 8h ago
This is true, and we’re also being price gouged on cars and car repairs which does directly drive up the cost of insurance when people play bumper cars in 100k SUVs

I had a hit and run last year. My insurance said that the other driver's insurance was lapsed. Went to highway patrol, gave them the videos, they did jack shit. Followed up every four weeks, and they say it's assigned, but "not much they can do" because the driver now has insurance.
No charges for the accident, no charges for the hit and run, no charges for being uninsured. They are fucking useless.

u/SlimTeezy 17h ago
If he's uninsured it's not a win (even if OP has uninsured coverage). My car got smashed a few years ago and I had to pay a $250 deductible to get it fixed. The drunk asshole ran away before the cops got there and it was his boss's car so idk what consequences he even faced.
3
u/mikedime13 10h ago
Yeah. Deductibles get paid bro what you mean lol. Like, always.
•
u/midwayatmidnight 49m ago
If the at fault car was identified and they didn't have insurance or valid coverage, you get the deductible waived. But that's only if you opt in UMC coverage. If you don't have collision and paid for umps 3500 on your policy, that's the other avenue.
•
u/midwayatmidnight 51m ago
You don't get the deductible waiver if the vehicle isn't identified. But you can still open umbi for injury and get a settlement with your own carrier if you were hurt.
•
u/SlimTeezy 29m ago
The car was wedged into a car down the road. Technically his boss's car, he rammed 4 cars along the street and ran away when someone heard the impacts and called the cops
•

u/ca_mudflap 6h ago
That’s why you make sure your policies have Uninsured AND UNDERINSURED motorist coverage.

u/Kivulini 19h ago
I love that it even had the little light on the mirror that turns on when someone is in your blindspot and they still went ahead and merged over.

u/Sparklespanx 19h ago
I’m genuinely so sick of selfish drivers in San Diego.
Yesterday, I was on College and crossing the intersection at University when the car in the fucking left hand turn lane whips around and tries to turn right instead. My pesky jeep just happened to be in the way and I barely accelerated in time to keep them from tboning me. This is literally the 4th time in 2 years I’ve almost been in a serious accident.
If you drive a white Land Rover with Utah tags, I hope you get a splinter that you can’t get out, an eyelash in your eye that won’t go away, your pillow is never cool, and all your flooring suddenly turns into Legos.

Non-CA plates = guaranteed shit-ass driver, Texas and Arizona are straight ass
41
u/SarcasticBassMonkey 18h ago
I really love how Texans and Zonies shit all over California, but yet they keep coming here.
2
18
u/bill_brasky37 19h ago
I swear I've seen a ton more tx plates lately. Zonies we've always known are awful.
5
u/Mustardo123 13h ago
Happens every summer unfortunately. Idiots who think we live in a “hellhole” still want to come here for vacation.
10
u/well_I_forfeit 18h ago
Yup...almost got taken out by an Audi with Illinois plates yesterday on Ash and 9th....I guess they don't have 1 way streets there...
9
u/ServingSize_OneNut 17h ago
Had to dodge a zonie going the wrong way down Tenth Ave… she flipped ME off

u/SierraPapaWhiskey 18h ago
Sorry, but nice try. Texas and Arizona are overly aggressive with big-ass princess pavement trucks and dumb/aggressive, respectively. Not all, of course, but enough that a stereotype is solidified. Not that CA is any better.

1
u/04BluSTi 10h ago
You should see how the Texasses, Utards, and Crapifornians drive here in Montana. On Vacation? Left your brains at home, too?
1
u/Unfair-Record3313 7h ago
Actually, Montana drivers acted like straight up assholes on the road when seeing my CA plates. If I need to merge or change lanes, they’d purposely speed up to close the gap when seeing my signal, and then maintain position whether I sped up or slowed down. Guess they showed my coastal elite ass. 🙄

I almost got pancaked the other day by a young impatient girl making a left turn and completely ignoring the pedestrian crossing sign. She got so close to me we literally made eye contact as I stared at her in disbelief.
I will never forgive 1900s America for choosing the personal vehicle over public transportation. Now we gotta hope everyone is going to responsibly operate their 5000 lb death trap.

u/wreakinghaddock 19h ago
Don't ever drive in MA if you think it's bad here. 😂
10
u/SierraPapaWhiskey 19h ago
Mass doesn't hold a candle to AZ (left lane hoggers), CA (generally 2% crazy) or NJ in NY (.01% who are beyond help).... I say this as someone who's driven many miles all over. Massachusetts is so tame compared to many other places. And keep your distance from Florida and rental cars, obviously.
9
u/Mountain_carrier530 18h ago
I've driven all over the country and South Carolina takes the cake. If you really want to take your life in your hands, try driving around Charleston. People will literally merge into you on a straightaway for the sole purpose of you existing in that lane, and turn lanes are a strong suggestion for them.
Zonies are followed after that.

Only reason MA sucks to drive in is cause the cities were designed by drunk 5 year olds...God I hated driving in Boston.

u/bugs1238 18h ago
Was driving from Westport to Boston last year. Got tail gated once we crossed the border lol

u/I_Hate_Humidity 19h ago
Car stop or hit & run you?
38
u/ongoldenwaves 19h ago
It looks like he hit him and it looks like he has texas plates. Maybe.
People driving like that don't stop. Uninsured, high, stolen car or all of the above. Piece of fucking shit.19
u/marinuss 16h ago edited 16h ago
I don't know why this has to be pointed out so often in the San Diego subreddit, but most out of state plates in the county are probably military. They don't have to register their cars here. Now if it's a $300,000 ferrari with Montana plates that's a rich asshole.
But the fact that they're most likely military is an amazing reason to have a dash cam because you get the plate, file an insurance claim, file a police report if they flee, it gets connected to a name, oh they are military? 100% wage garnishment if they're uninsured, plus they're fucked. If they're insured? Still fucked.
Edit since this is getting upvotes: There's misconceptions with insurance. If you're found not at fault, and this particular video would show that, your insurance legally cannot raise your rates for filing a claim, even against your uninsured motorist coverage. File the claim.

Omg, is this how clear night driving looks without astigmatism?!
15
u/isunktheship 19h ago
LOL was thinking the same.. looks like straight up rapture out there after 9pm
6
u/bill_brasky37 19h ago
Honest question - why does the video look clear to you? Is it the brighter lights in real life that affect astigmatism more?
8
2
u/Backyardfarmbabe 8h ago
Yeah, in the video all of the lights are actually illuminating the surroundings making them easy to see. What I see as a nighttime passenger is halos and blurriness around the lights.
47
u/orange_cat771 18h ago
I agree with everything you said, and the driver that hit you is a dick, but when you see someone crowding you like that, hitting the brakes is an option to avoid a collision.
14
u/whipplej 18h ago
Yeah, it was unfortunate timing being in their blind spot. It helps in that situation to either slow down or speed up a bit so they can see you. Still it's ultimately up to the other driver to check their blind spot, especially when driving so aggressive.
10
u/wavewalkerc 17h ago
Yea when someone is driving like that putting me in their blind spot I get the fuck out of it.
3
u/Marimacha666 6h ago
What’s wild is that they have the sensors that show on the mirrors if there’s a car on their blind spot and their sensor light for it was on and they still went for it
22
u/caj_account 19h ago
7
u/ongoldenwaves 19h ago
Yep. I've noticed it as well. What's up with that? Don't see Subaru's driving like that.
-3
u/caj_account 19h ago
You do that in a Subaru and a cylinder will punch a hole through the engine block
5
u/ongoldenwaves 18h ago
Not the newer ones. Doesn't matter as Subie drivers wouldn't test it. It's basically the Mr. Rogers of vehicles.

We're not mind readers. If you meant something else than what you wrote, you should learn to write more clearly.
-5
u/caj_account 17h ago
Most of their non japanese cars are sold in USA + Canada. That's what I meant. It was very clear to me. You can ask for clarification if you're confused vs cursing.
We can also discuss the reasons for why that is but every comment is getting downvoted so why would I bother?
2
u/petersellers 17h ago
It was very clear to me.
If you take what you said at face value, it's a false statement. It's not confusing, it's just wrong. People make mistakes all the time, there's nothing confusing about what you said. Judging by the amount of downvotes you got, it appears I'm not the only one that took what you said at face value.

Def not your fault but something I learned from riding motorcycles is you ALWAYS have to be the defensive driver/rider.

u/MetalSubstantial297 18h ago
This has been happening so much, lately. People just speeding to merge an inch in front of your car or just speeding up to keep you from merging.

u/eamike261 8h ago
People just speeding to merge an inch in front of your car or just speeding up to keep you from merging.
Ironically, that's exactly what OP was doing. Don't blow past people and cut them off while they're trying to merge in/out of the on/off lane in a congested spot
24
u/CuteHand 17h ago edited 16h ago
If you are local you should know better. That’s one of the worst freeway mergers in SD. Literally every driver is switching lanes in about 1/4 mi of road. You dumb speeding on the right with all those blinkers on. You were right but wrong and now have to deal with a broke ass car.
14
u/gg_serena 16h ago
Yeah, I mean it sucks they got hit, but wild to be passing tons of cars on the right in that spot. Not wise driving IMO
13
2
u/releasethedogs 6h ago
they they are the victim but it's still their fault because they should know better
2
u/BeautifulPurple4748 3h ago
This. The only worse merge is coming down the 163 past Friars towards the 8. Everyone is cross merging from or into that one lane.

I pulled someone out of a red Ford raptor back in 2014 or 2015 in that exact spot, he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and got swiped by a white SUV. Dude was folded up in the passenger side footwell after smacking into the wall. His name was Jeffery, took a while to get him to respond but he lived. Still got the blood stained Camis from wear his head was laying. Crazy times man, I was shaking and crying when the adrenaline finally wore off after the CHP cop gave me a hug.
12
u/Dannyjv 19h ago
Yall think SD drivers are bad? I lived there for 40 years. Moved to the OC 4 years ago. These MFers up here… it’s
Like they’re actually trying to be the worst drivers ever.
3
u/MajorJohnUSA 18h ago
Lol. Totally agree I just recently moved to North OC, I experienced more jerk drivers in 2 weeks than I had in SD for the past 5 years!

u/MzScarlet03 19h ago
I hate that on ramp so much. I go down to 5th instead because then I can get off on 94E without changing lanes
3
3
u/Pug-Padre-75 6h ago
It's crazy to me how many people don't look over their shoulder while changing lanes. This was one of the few things beat into my brain at drivers ed when I was 15.

u/Cautious-Leg1372 13h ago
The person that was trying to get into the exit Lane should have slowed his ass down and got behind you they're obviously there was plenty of room..
2
u/NotBossOfMe 7h ago
San Diego is the home of the worst drivers I have ever seen. Also, the home of young people driving Teslas and Mercedes and driving like idiots.
7
u/joaquinsolo 16h ago
am i the only one watching OP speed up while the traffic to the left of the them is slowing down / stopping and trying to exit? Clearly bad highway design, but OP I think you should've slowed down. no one is expecting anyone in the rightmost lane to accelerate in front of them.
-4
u/ShelterIndependent44 16h ago
I should’ve slowed down? Dude, you’re on the highway, you can’t impede traffic. And I was going straight. You literally can’t change across three lanes at once. Shoulder check, Geez!
3
u/joaquinsolo 15h ago
you were driving fast in the exit lane, not the passing lane. idk what you expected to happen. when ppl are telling you to drive defensively, this is what they mean. it’s not about you being right or wrong or who has the right of way. it’s about reducing your risk.
-6
u/ShelterIndependent44 14h ago
Finding fault with someone driving straight along their path, rather than with the person who changed three lanes at once without checking their blind spot and caused a collision is a whole other level. Good luck with that life cycle
3
u/eamike261 7h ago
They didn't say it's "your fault". They're saying if you drive dangerously on purpose by cutting people off in the on/off merging lane, and speeding past the flow of congestion, then this is more likely to happen to you
2
u/RaccoonLess9204 18h ago
You shouldn't be passing on the left for this very reason. And you should be much more defensive when doing so.
1
u/SoylentRox 19h ago
Does anyone feel confident to say the vehicle it was? I'm wondering if it came equipped with blind spot detection/warning. A..Nissan Rogue?
1
u/Select-Cucumber-8154 9h ago
It looks like the SUV wasn't going to let the smaller car with its blinker on in front them & it crossed the white line into the SUVs lane right when it was coming through....shoving its way through that is.
1
u/worldsupermedia750 7h ago
I saw that stretch of the 5 and immediately thought to myself “freeway pedestrian or shitty driver?”
Turns out it’s the latter. One of the reasons why I don’t drive out here

2
u/Mytzplk 17h ago
In driver's ed they teach you to check your blind spot for a reason
-5
u/ily300099 17h ago
In driver's ed, they teach you to expect other drivers to not see you on their blind spot and refrain yourself to that angle while driving. Because most drivers don't look.
0
u/Mytzplk 17h ago
So just confirming what you're saying: OP is at fault because this Nissan cut across 2 lanes without checking if it was safe to do so
Don't think an insurance adjuster is buying that. Could OP maybe have prevented an accident? Probably, but he still had the right to maintain his position
-4
u/ily300099 17h ago
Correct. He had the opportunity. One should always practice defensive driving at all times especially during traffic.
