The tornado episode

Why didn't they just go to the basement? The entire time? I'm watching the show going. Just going to the basement people. Any ideas?

The basement was full of sheetrock and 2x4s for a construction job. They mention it, but it might be cut in syndication now.

Gotcha. I'm watching it on reruns so it's possible.

Couldn’t they squeeze in? I feel like they could have squeezed in.

The truth is they didn't build the basement set until season 2

That makes the most sense.

I grew up in Illinois with a basement. But I had a friend who only had an unfinished crawl space. You better believe I’d have crawled into that dirty spider infested nightmare if a tornado was barreling down on us! There’s always space to squeeze in. 😆

Hopefully you never need this knowledge but never go into a crawl space during a tornado. The danger is that the house could completely collapse on you so it’s dangerous to be there. Best to get into a closet or interiormost room instead!

That is a good PSA, actually. I feel a lot of people’s instinct (including mine) would to be to go in a crawl space.

Don’t watch the movie Crawl. Lessened any desire I ever had to go into a crawl space

The creepy crawlies and tight space is enough to keep me out, but I appreciate the heads up! I don’t need anymore reasons to stay away from crawl spaces 😂

Possibly true, but I think the bigger reason wanted an excuse to keep them in the living room set. It wouldn’t be as fun watching them in the basement. The tornado had to be a threat. Jackie had to come over through the front door; the window had to break.

Maybe but I also think maybe there's the possibility that the tornado could still get at them and with all the stuff down there, it might be death trap at worst or just trapped at best.

I can agree with that. I never felt completely safe in my basement during a tornado warning.

Good point who knows. Fun fact, my mom lives in the county that they announce on the radio in that episode. So even though the town isn't real, the county in Illinois is.

I love it when things like that happen

They say exactly why in the episode— the basement is full of sheet rock and construction supplies.

I’m just next door to Fulton County in Peoria County! It’s the only time they mention exactly where Lanford would be located. In later seasons, they always make it sound further north.

I am next door in East Peoria. Noticed the same thing!

I love that episode. Probably bc I live in the Midwest and when the sirens go off, we stare out the front door.

That’s one of my favorite episodes Dan says it’s because he had to put those two by fours and sheet rock somewhere. Though it seems impractical to haul two by fours and sheet rock through your house and into the basement for storage, especially when he has a garage.

  1. I hate this episode. 2. You’re right! Why didn’t they go in the basement? I don’t have an answer. 3. Love your username!
