Not a very great mechanism when it requires the heart getting stabbed first before deploying

Exactly, plus even if it activated before getting stabbed, the vessels around are still unprotected.

honestly to me it feels very "last line of defense" sort of desperation mechanism. Shit's going real bad if you need to bust out the heart shield

given that's just my thoughts about it tho.
