I worked on this episode and if anyone is wondering about the deer with the forked tail, it used to be a feature that all the people had too. There is a background with a “tail extender” pill visible in the convenience store

I hope and pray that everyone who worked on this season so far stays with the show for the rest of its days because these episodes have been truly amazing so far. I couldn't be happier. 😁

I love the concept. An "alien invasion/encounter" story told from the perspective of the Alien. I loved watching him slowly becoming himself agains. Definitely was a soul crushing ending though.

Another subtle thing here: Rick didn't just mess up being Ted, he ruined other people's lives too. Either they ended up dead, or addicted to tech and far abandoned from what made them feel connected to the world.

I feel like this started with a lunchtime conversation about Severance and the writers' room evolved it into Rick using the innie/outie concept as his mad science version of a vacation.

I need an episode where it’s just Morty and or Summer helping Rick make all those holograms for the different scenario’s like “R-R-Rick! I don’t think you are ever going to get kidnapped by gangster grimace from McDonald’s.” Then we get a cut to that exact thing. Or something along those lines. Just the time it must have taken to make all of those. Could even do it dimensional cable and he shows them all the outcomes if he doesn’t.

u/rule-of-cool 18h ago
Does it keep Ted’s memories too, did we find out about that?
20
u/divineshadow666 18h ago
They didn't say, but I would say he keeps Ted's memories, just so he has something happy and relaxing to remember. It just went badly this time around. Of course, given the fact that there are contingency plans, I'd guess it goes wrong, like this time (and the post-credit scene), as often as it's actually relaxing.
12
u/mackaber 16h ago
I thought the animation improvement would be just for the previous episode, but I'm so happy to see it in this one too. It looks awesome
12
u/Carnavaliaa 15h ago edited 15h ago
Is it me or that episode was absolutely excellent.? Even better than the last one in a way for me. The previous one had spectacle and this one was so heart wrenching.
It was such an interesting representation of Rick’s evolution so far. I love how Ted slowly morphed into a season one version of Rick as he slowly understand the reality of being the smartest man in the universe. Then, that last scene where he press the button and there’s this sense that it doesn’t do anything but, judging by his reaction, he still changed behaviour somehow. He’s less erratic and more subdued. There’s still that sadness in his eyes but it’s a lot more controlled. And I guess that’s where current Rick’s head is at.
He still has that profound and deep sense of loneliness but, through his development all those seasons, he got better at coping with those feelings and allowing himself to open up to others. Such good writing.
13
u/Rydel6 14h ago
...And then he seemingly immediately goes on another vacation either not learning from his mistake or desperate.
Also, loved the nonchalant authority Summer is exhibiting.

This is the spoiler free review I left on IMDb that should be out soon (I also really liked the ending on season 8 and the season 9 opener and left a review I mentioned in this one, but all you need to know is that I appreciate the fact that Rick as a character is growing and experiencing growing pains):
I left a review on the last episode stating that Rick and Morty is finally putting all its old pieces together with its new ones, and that is still the case with another great entry into the series. But this episode made me realize what Rick and Morty was truly missing. Rick and Morty has had top tier episodes in every season thus far (with the exception of maybe season 6, which best episode “Solaricks” is probably a tier below), and instead needs to return to the form of the first four season where they still had these top episodes, but more importantly mixed in with about 7 really good to great ones. Honestly I found this episode to be closer to the so called top tier, however I’m sure some fans will find ways to compare it to episodes past to ruin the fun. This episode offers Rick and Morty fans a new idea for an episode that works REALLY well, and hits hard: as hard as any episode has before. Harmon-and-co clearly want it known that Rick, through it all, struggles just like everyone else. In the episode “Pickle Rick”, Dr Wong describes Rick’s view on his genius as a gift and an inescapable curse. This episode DEFINITELY shows which one is hitting Rick harder at this point, which furthers Rick’s emotional advancement as a character. I truly enjoyed this episode and have my hopes at the absolute highest for the continuation of a phenomenal season from beginning to end

After this episode, you feel empathy for Rick; it's as if the life he led before with his family will never make him happy, even though it's the only "real" thing he has. Deep down, he feels he chose the wrong life.

The ending hit me out of nowhere, holy shit. But this episode really goes to show that Rick is gonna be Rick, no matter how hard he tries to run from himself, or “take a vacation”, or switch bodies or whatever. He’s still that drunk, lonely, sad small man. Wow. I’m loving this season so far.

Moreso, it's that getting close to people hurts, especially when they can reject you or eventually leave you in some way.
In Rick's mind, it's better + easier to keep people at arm's length when you know what's going to happen to them. It keeps relationships "safe" (i.e., more predictable + easier to control), in a way.
Some of his biggest hurts were caused by rejection (Birdperson) and loss (Diane), so it makes sense why he'd become avoidant of relationships with others instead of engaging in new connections or developing pre-existing ones.
ETA: Rick is a lot more sensitive than he's willing to admit, and that kind of vulnerability can be really painful to deal with. It's easier to push it aside like he does with most other things.

Honestly was a great episode overall….i kind of selfishly was hoping though that “Ted” would remove the cybernetic enhancements so that Rick wouldn’t be quite as overpowered as he was against evil Morty….that fight was kind of cheapened for me so if he could lose the extreme power ups for a while I’d love that!

If he's been doing this "every summer" it will be interesting to find out if this time is different, or if this is what happens every summer.
Like maybe the entire planet and all of his friends were his own creation, and he has to reset it after each visit?
That seems like a pretty depressing ending.
