"It... didn't work?"

"No. It did."

Damn. When you think the magic button will make you a better version of yourself, but you're still... you.

Despite everything, it's still you.

Gotta love that classic Rick and Morty gutpunch ending.

14

u/Unhappy_Afternoon_32 18h ago

Its been a while since they’ve done that too… good to be back

69

If the 3rd episode keeps this momentum up, holy shit

16

u/Fluid_Berry_9386 18h ago

Is it possible we really get a 3ep streak?!

I for sure thought the tag would be about the leg phone. I got it wrong.

I worked on this episode and if anyone is wondering about the deer with the forked tail, it used to be a feature that all the people had too. There is a background with a “tail extender” pill visible in the convenience store

This is so season 2-5 vibes. I wouldnt be surprised if this is somehow the best season yet.

32

u/gettingby02 18h ago

I hope and pray that everyone who worked on this season so far stays with the show for the rest of its days because these episodes have been truly amazing so far. I couldn't be happier. 😁

I love the concept. An "alien invasion/encounter" story told from the perspective of the Alien. I loved watching him slowly becoming himself agains. Definitely was a soul crushing ending though.

39

u/bzosaur1 18h ago

The ending reminds me of The Old Man & The Seat, one of my favorites

37

u/Sneezy6510 18h ago

I really liked the episode. Sad ending, but great. I need a leg phone pay off tho.

42

u/enricopallazo22 18h ago

Another subtle thing here: Rick didn't just mess up being Ted, he ruined other people's lives too. Either they ended up dead, or addicted to tech and far abandoned from what made them feel connected to the world.

5

u/SevenCedarJelly 13h ago

Agree but, that wasn’t subtle.

42

u/ButterflyExciting497 9h ago

a perfect r&m episode for me. this is the formula that makes the show so special

this is actually a really depressing rick concept when you think about it. the only way he can truly relax and be happy is by literally forgetting who he is

This entire episode was an amazing display of what its like to go through alcoholism

20

u/Demonweed 18h ago

I feel like this started with a lunchtime conversation about Severance and the writers' room evolved it into Rick using the innie/outie concept as his mad science version of a vacation.

23

u/Acrobatic-Dark-4402 18h ago

Reverse Severance is a really cool idea

20

u/HotTakes4HotCakes 18h ago

Well... I thought that episode was a great character development entry for Rick and I'm happy it delivered solidly at the end. I bawled my eyes out letting the credits roll. Fantastic stuff from the writing team, felt like some season 2-3 stuff.

I need an episode where it’s just Morty and or Summer helping Rick make all those holograms for the different scenario’s like “R-R-Rick! I don’t think you are ever going to get kidnapped by gangster grimace from McDonald’s.” Then we get a cut to that exact thing. Or something along those lines. Just the time it must have taken to make all of those. Could even do it dimensional cable and he shows them all the outcomes if he doesn’t.

Does it keep Ted’s memories too, did we find out about that?

20

u/divineshadow666 18h ago

They didn't say, but I would say he keeps Ted's memories, just so he has something happy and relaxing to remember. It just went badly this time around. Of course, given the fact that there are contingency plans, I'd guess it goes wrong, like this time (and the post-credit scene), as often as it's actually relaxing.

12

u/mackaber 16h ago

I thought the animation improvement would be just for the previous episode, but I'm so happy to see it in this one too. It looks awesome

12

u/Carnavaliaa 15h ago edited 15h ago

Is it me or that episode was absolutely excellent.? Even better than the last one in a way for me. The previous one had spectacle and this one was so heart wrenching.

It was such an interesting representation of Rick’s evolution so far. I love how Ted slowly morphed into a season one version of Rick as he slowly understand the reality of being the smartest man in the universe. Then, that last scene where he press the button and there’s this sense that it doesn’t do anything but, judging by his reaction, he still changed behaviour somehow. He’s less erratic and more subdued. There’s still that sadness in his eyes but it’s a lot more controlled. And I guess that’s where current Rick’s head is at.

He still has that profound and deep sense of loneliness but, through his development all those seasons, he got better at coping with those feelings and allowing himself to open up to others. Such good writing.

13

u/Rydel6 14h ago

...And then he seemingly immediately goes on another vacation either not learning from his mistake or desperate.

Also, loved the nonchalant authority Summer is exhibiting.

7

u/AverageAmoeba 14h ago

i think the credits scene might be one of his previous vacations, since the egg was apparently successful

This is the spoiler free review I left on IMDb that should be out soon (I also really liked the ending on season 8 and the season 9 opener and left a review I mentioned in this one, but all you need to know is that I appreciate the fact that Rick as a character is growing and experiencing growing pains):

I left a review on the last episode stating that Rick and Morty is finally putting all its old pieces together with its new ones, and that is still the case with another great entry into the series. But this episode made me realize what Rick and Morty was truly missing. Rick and Morty has had top tier episodes in every season thus far (with the exception of maybe season 6, which best episode “Solaricks” is probably a tier below), and instead needs to return to the form of the first four season where they still had these top episodes, but more importantly mixed in with about 7 really good to great ones. Honestly I found this episode to be closer to the so called top tier, however I’m sure some fans will find ways to compare it to episodes past to ruin the fun. This episode offers Rick and Morty fans a new idea for an episode that works REALLY well, and hits hard: as hard as any episode has before. Harmon-and-co clearly want it known that Rick, through it all, struggles just like everyone else. In the episode “Pickle Rick”, Dr Wong describes Rick’s view on his genius as a gift and an inescapable curse. This episode DEFINITELY shows which one is hitting Rick harder at this point, which furthers Rick’s emotional advancement as a character. I truly enjoyed this episode and have my hopes at the absolute highest for the continuation of a phenomenal season from beginning to end

8

u/Fluid_Berry_9386 18h ago

He has a huge hand in it. Infantilizing him is crazy

6

u/gettingby02 18h ago edited 18h ago

Moreso, it's that getting close to people hurts, especially when they can reject you or eventually leave you in some way.

In Rick's mind, it's better + easier to keep people at arm's length when you know what's going to happen to them. It keeps relationships "safe" (i.e., more predictable + easier to control), in a way.

Some of his biggest hurts were caused by rejection (Birdperson) and loss (Diane), so it makes sense why he'd become avoidant of relationships with others instead of engaging in new connections or developing pre-existing ones.

ETA: Rick is a lot more sensitive than he's willing to admit, and that kind of vulnerability can be really painful to deal with. It's easier to push it aside like he does with most other things.

6

u/Beginning_Ad9598 18h ago

Another banger of a song. Waiting Around to Die x Townes Van Zandt

7

u/Maddierich31 16h ago

Honestly was a great episode overall….i kind of selfishly was hoping though that “Ted” would remove the cybernetic enhancements so that Rick wouldn’t be quite as overpowered as he was against evil Morty….that fight was kind of cheapened for me so if he could lose the extreme power ups for a while I’d love that!

u/theMisterFister2000 15h ago

Holographic Rick saying "Alright, well, shit."

That's all I needed to know this was going to be a fun ride

Shout out to the mods for being cool and still doing LIVE episode discussions. Way too many show subs are being lazy by getting rid of them and only doing one thread, and it makes it really lame. The live discussion BSing ends up being the only stuff that gets visibility.

7

u/BarnyardCruz 18h ago

Appreciate you! I'm a fan of seeing the live reactions to the episode (even if they are terrible, like Numbericons was, haha)

Honestly, pretty episode so far

u/Quidfacis_ SHITPOST 18h ago

If he's been doing this "every summer" it will be interesting to find out if this time is different, or if this is what happens every summer.

Like maybe the entire planet and all of his friends were his own creation, and he has to reset it after each visit?

That seems like a pretty depressing ending.

6

u/Galileo908 Peace Among Worlds 18h ago

So…none of the friends are surviving this episode, are they?

Cheers to the first time I’ve ever seen fire sprinklers in movies/TV depicted somewhat accurately as being full of gross old disgusting rusted water.

I wonder if an alt-title was “Severickance” but they didn’t go with it because it was too on the nose.
