Question japanese sets luck?

okay so i’m SUPER new to pokémon. as in.. i have only opened 5 single packs of japanese mega symphonia. i really like the full arts and have a few chasers from this set hence i keep buying these packs. i’m a little confused on how the luck works compared to english sets? like, my bf will get an eng pack and get awesome hits and shinies but when i open my jap pack i get nothing but basics. he’s explained the fact that it’s 10 cards vs 5 so luck is already decreased and with english packs you’re guaranteed a shiny (correct me if i’m wrong). i also see tiktok’s of other people with jp sets who get awesome pulls every time! i know to be aware with tiktok as they can be faked etc which is why i came on here to see if anyone else has the same experience!

i don’t know if it’s the set, the fact im buying singles or WHAT but my luck isn’t lucking!! do i need to get boosters to guarantee certain cards? i literally don’t understand. if anyone could explain in dummy terms it’ll be greatly appreciated🙏🏼

Japanese booster boxes have guaranteed hits, and with 5 cards, are extremely easy to weigh. It is very easy to open the box, weigh the hits, and sell or grade the dead packs.

ahh i see.. i’ll need to invest then! is it similar with english packs too or less likely because there are more cards?

English packs have code cards and are much harder to weigh compared to vintage packs. Plus English doesn't have guaranteed hits per booster box like Japanese do. An English booster box can have 10 hits or 2, it's all RNG

If you're collecting for the art and not to bothered about value, maybe consider Korean? A Korean mega symphonia booster box is only about £35

I’m pretty sure they mean as in investing to get a box to open not to hold

They're talking about opening packs and they call foil cards "shinies"

It couldn't be more obvious they were not talking about investing like it's gonna be their closet sealed collection, especially when they were saying booster boxes of Japanese felt pricey (although even Japanese is well above MSRP these days, so they aren't really wrong)

Thank god OP has so many defenders. If only it couldn’t be more clear that I was just laughing at their use of the word. You’re like the third person to point this out what is the purpose of repeating what others have already said? Just terminally online and need attention? I’ll give you some!

For the most part, all Japanese booster boxes have 3 ARs and 1-2 SR+. If you bought loose packs, they’re probably dud packs from being searched.

oooh interesting! when it comes to booster boxes, how many packs do you usually get? is it 30? also, do you know about the holo rates? :)

Normal sets have 30 packs per box. Holo rates are about 7 per box and ex is about 4 per box. I don’t remember the exact numbers but those should be close.

thank you for the info, super helpful! i’ve looked at some booster boxes and the korean ones are far cheaper. i’m not too interested in the values of cards so don’t mind them being korean. if it’s the same set (mega symphonia) will the rates be the same as the japanese sets? sorry so many questions!

I don’t know anything about Korean cards, sorry. Chinese is also another alternative and they list pull rates on the boxes.

not a problem! you’ve been super helpful thank you so much.

I haven’t kept up with Korean sets but I know for sure that at one point they didn’t have the same guaranteed hit rates as JP.

Also, holos are not guaranteed in English packs. Just reverses unless that’s what you mean by shiny cards.

Absolutely avoid buying single packs of japanese. You are basically buying dead packs.

yeah that makes a lot of sense. do you have any advice on telling which sets aren’t split into 2 japanese sets? i might have to swap from mega symphonia to another set!

never ever buy japanese singles. these are weighted, metal-detected, and hits stolen
