Realistic rental option for incoming postdoc

Hi everyone !

I recently got an external fellowship to come for a postdoc at Oxford, and am now looking at the practical details.

From what I have seen so far, it looks like I won't be able to live by myself on my salary (2450£ after tax), which sadly says a lot about the state of academia...

So far I have mostly looked at websites such as Rightmove, and it's a bit depressing.

Since I do not know the city, maybe there are some location I should look into to find better prices that I am missing ? Anyway, I have a few questions if you don't mind helping me out, it would be great:

- What's the maximum rent that agencies and landlord would be willing to have me pay? I get that your gross pay should be about 3x the rent, but I'm not sure how that translate to the net after tax income that I have (2450£)

- Are there accomodation accessible through university? I will technically be a "visitor" during my 2 years postdoc.

- My PI is in Linacre college. Does this mean I can get a common room membership there, and would it be possible to get accomodation through them?

- If you have any additional suggestions, I'd be super happy to hear about them !

Thanks !

Missing cat in Jericho

My cat has gone missing in Jericho. She is a black, medium-hair cat named Jiji. If you've seen her, please contact me. Thank you. https://postimg.cc/nMc1qbLH

Update: Jiji has been found! Thank you all for your help in keeping your eyes out for her. She managed to sneak into a neighbor's house and got locked in a cupboard. She's skinny and scared, but otherwise healthy and happy to be home. Thank you all again.

Heathrow Airport car service?

Hello! I am returning to Oxford (from the US) for the first time since 2018. I was wondering if there are any car services that go from Oxford to Heathrow? I know I can take the bus, but I would prefer the convenience of door-to-door transportation. Thanks!

Need advice

I will be studying in Oxford (Boars Hills) and I m not sure what should I do to find apartments to rent. On Campus accommodation seems a bit expensive so I am trying to see my options now. I have never been to UK before so I dont know what I should do and how I can find an apartment before I go there.
And also, is biking really good option for commuting?
How is the weather like in Autumn ?

Anyone working in the Harwell Space Cluster?

Throwaway account. I’m considering a move to an established start up there. I have 10 years exp at the forefront of a niche technology in space flight and I’m in a very strong position to negotiate.

I’m sure it varies but was wondering if anyone can benchmark a typical salary in the cluster for Head of / VP / Director roles?

Thanks,

Thinking of starting a home-cooked Indian tiffin delivery in Oxford. Would there be any interest?

Hey everyone,

I've been cooking Indian food for years and I'm seriously considering starting a small tiffin delivery service around Oxford proper home-cooked dinners, not restaurant or takeaway stuff.
The idea is simple: freshly cooked Indian meals delivered to your door (or a nearby pickup point) in the evenings. Think dal, sabzi, rice, roti — the kind of food you'd get at someone's home, not a menu designed around a tandoor oven. Everything labelled with full allergen info.
I'd be starting small, probably a set menu that changes weekly, with a veg and non-veg option.
Before I go ahead with all the food registration and setup, I wanted to get a sense of whether this is something people in Oxford would actually want.
A few things I'd genuinely like to know:

— Would you use something like this? Once a week, a few times, daily?
— What would you expect to pay for a full home-cooked dinner for one?
— Would you prefer delivery to your door or a collection point?
— Any dietary requirements that would be a dealbreaker if not catered to (vegan, gluten-free, halal)?
— Which areas of Oxford would need to be covered for this to work for you?

Not trying to sell anything here — just trying to figure out if the demand exists before I commit. Any honest thoughts appreciated, including "this already exists and you're late."

Cheers.

Try sailing on the Thames

Have you ever been walking on Port Meadow and seen the sailors out enjoying the river in their sailing dinghies and been interested to find out more? Medley sailing club has an open day tomorrow.

Incredibly friendly club and a lot of fun! You dont have to be an old hand at sailing/ know anything about it to come along and give it a try.

Google maps should get you there, but club is between "The Medley" and "The Perch" pubs.

Ps- hope this post doesn't count as advertising as its not for a business/ there are frequently people asking on here about activities to do in oxford. If it isn't allowed- my apologies.

edit- if there are any questions about the club/open day, im happy to try answer them.

Best full fibre broadband in (New) Marston

I just moved into a new house in New Marston, and I am looking into getting a broadband connection.

A lot of people seem to be recommending Youfibre, but it is not (yet) available in my area. Many people also had bad experiences with Vodafone and BT, so I am trying to avoid that.

This leaves Rise, Now, EE, Plusnet, and Sky.

Does anyone have a recommendation betweek these options, or does anyone perhaps have any of these and had a bad experience?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Temporary accommodation in Oxford

Hello. I’m currently living with my family in London. But we will be moving to Oxford asap since my 11yo son got accepted into a good school there.

We have found a property we’d like to buy. But realistically, with renovations, planning permissions etc we won’t be able to move in before November / December or so.

Since my sons school starts in September, there will be a few months of transition. Where we can’t move into our new house yet but my son and my wife (I will stay with our younger daughter in London during this time) need to live in Oxford.

So, my question is; what is the best way to find maybe a room to rent? Or are there temporary accommodations I’m not considering? Maybe linked to educational facilities?

Obviously I’d like to avoid renting an expensive air bnb or 1 bedroom flat for several months. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Council Tax Help

My landlord pays the council tax, and I recently registered with the council to get a proof of address as my new job required a DBS check. Today I received a big council tax bill. My rent includes the council tax already. Upon calling my landlord, he explained I shouldn’t have registered in the first place, and now I must clarify it with the council on my own. He suggested I should call them right away.

I am quite stuck, tried calling the council number and was waiting for 30 mins, but no one answered. Any suggestions on what to do next (I am new to all of this)?

Thanks a lot 🙏

Inspector Morse's Oxford (1993): Colin Dexter in Conversation With Brian Redhead

Thumbnail youtu.be
4 Upvotes

I've started watching Inspector Morse recently from the beginning. My Mum used to watch it as it aired in the 80s and 90s and I have fond memories of catching bits. Most interestingly for me and this sub though, is that the series was filmed in and around Oxford from 1987 until 2000 which is exactly when my family moved to the area and then eventually moved away. So it's incredibly evocative to watch the series and see Oxford from that time. This video in particular takes you around Oxford and some other nearby locations in 1993. Seeing the pubs, the Randolph Hotel (where my Dad had his 40th birthday) and other places from this time is really great. It shows The Oxford Story as well, i'm sure any kid of a certain age has vivid memories of riding the 'train' through there.

I maybe have an overly romanticised version of Oxford in my head from growing up nearby, but watching this it really is a lovely place and brought back some nice memories.
