The great Greggs heist I witnessed last Saturday still lives in my head rent free.

I was in Haymarket, just picked up a coffee from Greggs so toddled over to the sugar stand to get my fix of glucose.

As I was sorting my coffee out, some lanky, early 20s knuckle-dragger of a lad sprinted (at what felt like me specifically for a second) from the junction entrance, darted into Greggs (inches away from me, as I just stood there looking at the dude in disbelief), yanked open the fridge, swiped 2 Oasis bottles and single fucking Capri-Sun, then legged it.

I'm nearly 40 and have been around Newcastle my entire life, this is new to me. Has anyone else noticed an uptick or people becoming more brazen about shoplifting?

I'm not naive enough to think theft doesn't take place in town, but fucking Greggs? This dude didn't look homeless, he looked like a classic charva dickhead. He just did not give a fuck.

idk, it just blows my tiny thick mind and I hope this shit doesn't become normal.

Attacked with spray paint

Cycling towards the entrance of the High level Bridge last night about half 11, my path was blocked by 10 cunts on a stag do. One pulled out a tin of spray paint and sprayed me. Luckily didn't make good contact and only got my arm and jacket.

Anyone else come accross these wankers? All dressed in white/cream, possibly with scarfs or some thing round their shoulders. seemingly boarding school/rugby team vibes. Couldn't really respond in kind as I would have certainly had my head kicked in.

The metro is so expensive, the price of single ticket £4.30 from longonbenton to Haymarket.

Got the metro back from the doctor's today £4.30 for the metro to go 5 stops. same price nearly as the train to hartlepool or haltwhistle, i am not a frequent bus user but i use them now and again £2.50 the fair cap seems reasonable. imagine the cost of living to people who rely on public transport to get to work if the £2.50 price cap gets scrapped.

the entire price of the metro blew my mind today.

Thankyou to everyone that suggested the pop card

(also interesting to see the true price of public transport if the cap wasn't in place)

New poster Lost/moving allotments on the town moor

Post image

This map is from the 1930s (up in the lit and phil). Interesting that quite a few of the bits of the moor that were allotments no longer are. Not on the photo but the allotments closer to Jesmond/Gosforth aren't marked as allotments.

This is a wonderfully charming film with some brilliant quotes. "You gotta know yer leek, grow yer leek and show yer leek" Also next leeks I grow are 100% getting eaten as a soup from a pint pot.

Tickets for sale Low Budget Flyer

Post image
2 Upvotes

Guys, has anyone else had one of these through their door? I was really enjoying the low budget flyer - which is a photocopy, but after trying to find more info about the event, and not finding anything, I am now super intrigued.

There is an event in the location on that date, but it's a whole day 'BioFocus Conference'. The tickets for the actual event are also over double the price on the flyer, at the cheapest, and there are no speakers announced yet.

I'm just finding this so funny, my friend thought it was fake but who would go to the effort and for what purpose? Any info would be highly satisfying at this point :) thanks

New poster Northumberland Line Pop pay-as-you-go users: a known charging fault has been overcharging people since at least January

This only matters if you use a Pop pay-as-you-go card to travel on the Northumberland Line (Newcastle to Ashington). It does not effect season ticket holders and I don't think it effects other metro lines.

Pop pay-as-you-go has a daily cap, so no matter how many trips you make in a day, you should never be charged more than that.

On the Northumberland Line, that cap is being breached. I've been charged well above it on a large share of my travel days, sometimes by pence, sometimes by several pounds. On some days I pay nearly £15.

This isn't a hunch; it came out of Nexus's own data, sent to me by their complaints team, along with accidently sending me internal emails where they discuss the known problem.

There is no portal or app screen that lets a Pop pay-as-you-go user check what they were charged on a given day, only your current total, so I'm sure others haven't noticed the odd overcharge, but I travel a lot on that line, so Nexus have overcharged me by hundreds of pounds. Over Christmas I noticed I seemed to be getting overcharged and started collecting data. They currently owe me over £150 in overcharged I've still not been able to recover.

I've been recording this by keeping a note of my balance each day so I can see what I've been charged. If you travel on this line, and use a pay as you go pop card to do so please record this for a week or two.

If you're also being overcharged please let me know (there is strength in numbers and I'm getting nowhere slowly on my own). Also please open a complaint with nexus, ask for a copy of your travel data since the line was opened and see how much you're due back.

Group of us visiting the Toon on Saturday 13th. We're keen to watch the Scotland game that night (kick of is 2am Sunday morning). Anyone know if there's bars or pubs with late licenses or if its a casino job to catch the late night games. Cheers

New poster Trying to find the name of a nightclub around Bigg Market

Hi, does any one know the name of a house/techno nightclub around Bigg Market, it’s in the building opposite Filthy’s and just right above WhiskeyDown.

I’ve tried to find it on maps but no luck.

It was a lot of fun the first time I wandered up there, so I went back there last 2 Saturdays or so and the bouncer said it wasn’t open for the night, which I thought was odd.

I wonder that it might not be on the map… if anyone knows what I’m talking about, please let me know.

Need to find the name so I can check opening times/days.

Thanks!

New poster Where to go out now? Haven’t been to Newcastle in almost 10 years!

Hi there - have a girls (in our 30s) trip coming up at the end of this month and wondering where is now good to go out?

A couple of us in the group went to uni here but graduated 10+ years ago so when we were students the best places were on the diamond strip! I don’t think our music tastes have changed drastically since then 😂 looking for good vibes and maybe with people kind of our age rather than student nights!

Thanks in advance - can’t wait to get back up there!

Thank you, Newcastle!

Just want to express how grateful we are for the tremendous support we received from reddit community of Newcastle on our last post about AltDesking. So many of you (and others) booked work sessions at cafes, hotel lobbies, and co-working spaces on the platform. It has helped us to iron out some creases, and plan some great upcoming features.

This is a project we started from scratch in Newcastle and we aspire to take it to the world, and your support means EVERYTHING!

Thanks so very much again. 🙏🏽🙏🏽

Peace out!

Hi,

Kids at school and husband off work, so we’re wanting to go for lunch.

I love Rio’s but my husband isn’t overly keen on steak, however he loves a good proper burger!
Any recommendations for somewhere that does both?
Thanks

New poster Leather embroidery service

Hi, does anyone know if I can get my leather jackets embroidered anywhere in the area?

I’ve only found shops where you can order an already embroidered jacket which is not what I’m looking for. I’m hoping someone may know a place that offers just embroidery services

New poster Swimming in the beach

Post image

Hiya guys!
I’m here for few days and was wondering if the water is any good? I’m not used to standing/swimming in ice cold water (yet!), so is there any chance for a relax in the water or should I hope for a hot weather to come back here? 😆
Also, are there any specific/popular spots to go for the first time on the beach? I have to rely on a public transport so anything within reach would be highly appreciated!

Anyone used North Tyneside Council for an MOT?

I don't know if I've being really thick here or what but I saw a recommendation on here a while back to book an MOT through North Tyneside Council, so I've just booked it and now I'm getting emails mentioning taxi licensing even though I'm not a taxi.

Can anyone confirm this is how it should be or have I went and booked a taxi MOT by mistake?
