Hey r/NakedAndAfraid,

I’m Mandy Horvath, and I’m excited to introduce myself as the first amputee to ever take on Naked and Afraid. Some of you may know me as LifeProofBionicWoman here on Reddit, or maybe as "that funny Tinder amputee" from viral posts over the years. I survived being struck by a locomotive in 2014, which resulted in the loss of both my legs. Since then, I’ve crawled up Pikes Peak twice, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and even the stairs inside the Statue of Liberty. But this challenge? A whole different beast.

I took on the wild with my partner, Jonny Yates @thejonnyyates, and together we faced the ultimate survival test. Did we make it to the end? You’ll have to watch and find out. I can’t share details just yet, but I promise it was an experience like no other. I’m looking forward to talking more about it soon, so stay tuned for an AMA right here, where I’ll answer all your burning questions.

Catch the season premiere on March 9 at 8 p.m. EST! Let’s get Naked and Afraid!

Episode Discussion Apocalypse Episode 1. Ok, can we talk about HOW and WHY they brought back Russell? 👎😒

Russell has been schooled by other cast member SO many times, but I knew that he never learned his lesson! Lazy, annoying, and worthless as usual. I can’t believe he sat around for days (except for his fruitful hunting expedition), while his teammates built a shelter, gathered firewood, went fishing, and did of the other work. He should do them a favor and leave.

If Matt doesn't win L.O.S I'm boycotting N.A.A He's always such a great guy and feeds everyone. He's so kind. Pisses me off it may be his downfall. Patrick sucks so bad.

Episode Discussion I can’t believe what Jeff, Trish & Jen were planning to do! Spoiler

I know Amber can be bossy, but she’s not a bad person. Wanting to leave is one thing, but sneaking out in the middle of the night is cruel and f-ed up! I can’t stop thinking about it and i’m completely disgusted with all three of them. The respect I had for Jeff, is now lost for even suggesting it.

None of them ever bothered to just have a heart to heart and try to figure out how to communicate respectfully. Instead, Trish and Jen were content with being gossipy and immature. They flat out refused to help and intentionally did the opposite of what Amber asked, even when it was going to help feed them. I’m not saying that Amber is totally innocent, but at least she tried and remained a team player throughout.

Episode Discussion Unbearable Bill

Bill was unbearable from the moment he started the episode. Party boy intro and saying he wants two girls in the hammock… I knew he was going to be gross. He didn’t care about Jolie’s needs and called them unnecessary. Jolie CARRIED the entire episode AND HIM. He was so sickening. He’s so selfish he couldn’t even celebrate the first food win of the challenge. He was being such a baby about the water. I wonder what the production staff thought of him. Jolie would’ve been better to tell him to do how own thing and he definitely wouldn’t have made it. What a horrible partner.

Episode Discussion Cheeny ❤️

I appreciate how cheeny mentions that it doesn’t matter if you’re the only woman anywhere, and in a competition. Also that she made her own choice- even under pressure

This thought has come to me a few times over the years and hearing her say that was the best part of the episode.

Episode Discussion S18E3: Is it weird I’m disappointed with Steven?

Steven never builds sufficient shelter. He just embraces the suck and zens his way through the elements and bugs. His mental fortitude is insane. While that is a great strategy for him, I always feel awful when he has a partner that ends up tapping or being miserable because he doesn’t want to spend the calories to make a shelter.

I was getting annoyed that the group didn’t try to make some sort of enclosure similar to a boma so they felt more secure from the coyotes. Maybe Jenny would’ve lasted longer. Once they realized the lack of food resources, it would’ve been nice if they spent more time at the lake and tried using the net idea when they weren’t sapped of energy.

When the group caught the snake, and Steven talked about his first N&A challenge where he ate the snake heart, he again made it about himself and instead of passing the torch and letting Allison eat the heart, he made it his full circle moment because it’s all about Steven of course.

Also disappointed with Steven just getting the one fish, as he’s a fisherman, and he brings a damn slingshot? Like who’s actually thrived with a slingshot on the show? Literally anything else would’ve been helpful. I think he just wanted to spice it up and do something different from all the challenges he was on, but it felt like it was at the expense of his partners.

Bottom line: this episode dragged and should’ve only been 45 minutes. No one displayed any skills (or they were cut out). When Allison started shingling the shelter I had a little hope, but they didn’t even put some kind of platform to keep them off the freezing cold ground. I was hoping that Steven was coming back improving on his weakness (shelter), and then the end of the show happened and told us what he was really there for.

Steven boasts that he’s now the survivalist with the most days under his belt. It gave me the ick. Now we know why he went out there. It wasn’t about being a mentor and passing down his knowledge like Matt does, it was all about Steven getting bragging rights over Jeff. Don’t get me wrong, I despise Jeff’s character but he is the better survivalist and I hate to say it.

What are your thoughts? Am I crazy?

Episode Discussion S18E4 Beauty & the Bro - Fan challenge Spoiler

The female Jolie rocked it. Even going without sleep the first 5 nights. What a selfish immature boy they paired her with. She committed to getting water for him to guzzle just to get a nights sleep. He never said Thank You for any of her efforts. Not even when she showed the 7 coconuts she found. He should never return. Not a team player. She ran circles around him. Thinking & doing physical tasks. He's disgusting. I feel so bad for her....she's amazing.

Episode Discussion I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more boring episode on naked and afraid then this first episode.

They eat better then me. It’s in a 6 time XL pros backyard. There are 3 people. They have a knive, a bow, a masquito net, and rope and a fire starter and a big ass pot. They used to get a knive, fire starter and sometimes a pot. I changed the channel it was boring to me. I honestly think I could have done this “challenge “

Episode Discussion Global Showdown Questions

Why was Dan bad-mouthing his partner? He didn't do any better. Why was Ky's team girl/girl when all the other teams were boy/girl? She should've had Waz as a partner. They would be fairly unbeatable. What ever happened to Bulent? They showed a cameo of him. Why isn't he representing a country?

He looked like he finished a 60 day challenge the minute he got out of the vehicle. I never seen anyone so thin when they started, and his stamina was non-existent. Real tough on his partner to bail on morning of day 3.

Episode Discussion Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown Season 1 Episode 2 Running Diary!

Episode Name: Fire and Pain

What’s up, everybody! I hope your weekend went well and that you’re ready for two hours of sweaty, naked fun!

Welcome to the Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown Running Diary! Let’s get to it!

–I really hope this episode is good. We all need A Big Win.

–Day 2.

–Time to build a bridge.

–Frank and Teal are in third place. They get a fire starter and a bow. Not a bad deal.

–Teal goes hunting. Chances of success 38%.

–The animals are on the other side of the river. Chances of success drop to 0%.

–Let’s check in with Dan and Rachel.

–Nighttime.

– “WTF was that,” Dan asks as a large animal prowls outside their boma. What could it be?!

–Day 3.

–Dan and Rachel are in last place and only got a fire starter. Sucks to be them.

–Jeff and Kerra are chillin’ in (tied for) last place as well.

–Scroll time!

–The challenge is to build a torch. Seems simple enough, right?

–Two challenges: A torch and a bridge.

– “If you don’t play to win, don’t play at all!” –Pablo Escobar.

–Team Australia is ready to build their bridge. Let’s go!

–Stock footage of a monster crocodile. Nature you scary!

–Jeff put on some fat for this challenge. He knows what he’s doing.

–Matt knows how to build bridges. Remember that one he built on XL Louisiana?

–Gabby tells us that “people are going to be…surprised (by me).” I’m sure everyone knows you’re a capable human being, Gabby.

–Gabby decides to climb a tree. Watch out for rash on the thighs!

–She’s straddling the tree. That can’t feel good on the ol’ privates.

–Remember when Nathan climbed that tree? Good times.

–Now Matt is giving Gabby a piggyback.

–We finally get some time with team Mexico.

–The producers are treating Mexico and Brazil like the B Team.

–Frank and Teal make a torch.

–Flashback to when Teal had an attitude problem during The Apocalypse.

–A giraffe sighting!

–I love how the “river” is actually just a dirty ditch.

–Teal is pissed that Frank isn’t using all of the materials she accumulated for him but it sounds like Frank plans on using it for later torches. Not sure what the drama is here.

–We learn that Alexa enjoys taking instructions.

–Dan and Rachel finish their bridge.

–I was expecting more from everyone’s “bridges.”

–Team Brazil makes an appearance for .0005 seconds.

–Frank and Teal are back on track.

–Team Mexico is in the house. I forgot they were even on the show.

–Texas must complete their torch if they want to compete in the competition. Come on, Jeff. Hurry!

–Matt tells us that he outworks the world.

–Kerra feels like she and Jeff are letting down Texas.

–Matt and Jeff say hello to one another. They’re such good friends!

– “If you’re behind the leader, you’re going to be looking at the ass.” –Matt.

–I mean, technically that’s true.

–Alexa and Ky work well together. They will be hard to beat.

–Is Dan ignoring Rachel? Sure seems like it.

–We finally get Jeff’s trademark “This is what I live for!”

–What do you think they’re using these torches for? Burning down a village?

–Hey, it’s Team Brazil! What are they up to?

–Eating worms. Yum.

–And that’s enough screen time for Brazil, I guess.

–Nighttime.

–Ky and Alexa are tired. They worked hard.

–And we’re back with Team Brazil! Wow! Thanks, producers!

–Lots of creepy nighttime noises around their camp.

–Hyenas surround their camp. Watch out, Brazil.

–The hyenas are now bothering Ky and Alexa. Stupid hyenas.

–Ok, we get it. Lots of nature. Get on with it.

–Day 4.

–Torch challenge day!

–Marina of Brazil is tired. Rene is ready to go.

– “Let’s go “torch out” our competition.” I’ll let you guess who said that.

–Brazil and Mexico are at the bottom of the challenge. I give both teams a 5% chance of winning this competition.

–Torch challenge description: Lots of stuff will happen.

–Only five teams will move on to phase 2. Does that mean the other two teams are eliminated permanently?

–Rene lit that fire in .09 seconds!

–Team Mexico didn’t test their torch ahead of time. Trouble?

–Jeff and Kerra’s torch seems to be working well. Same with Frank and Teal’s.

–Here’s Dan talking about communication again. They’re setting up a real feud between him and Rachel.

–The editing makes it impossible to know who is in the lead, but I think it’s Matt and Gabby.

–Is Team Mexico last to light their torch? I think so. Disappointing. I like them and Brazil.

–Matt and Gabby finish first and are on to the deadfall trap challenge.

–Team Brazil is in trouble. Come on, guys! Let’s go!

–Team Australia lights their rope! Looks like Brazil and Mexico are out of this current challenge.

–Time for the deadfall trap challenge.

–Time for Dan to talk about communication again. They’re really hyping up this fight that seems inevitable now.

–Matt says some stuff.

–I’m not sure Dan was ever forced to do group projects in school.

–Does Jeff know what he’s doing? I’m not sure he knows what he’s doing.

–Rachel offers a solution, Dan doesn’t like the solution but ultimately decides to try her solution, and she declines the said solution. Sounds like marriage.

–Kerra looks like she’s about to lose her shit at Jeff.

–Frank and Teal finish their deadtrap first! Didn’t see that coming.

–Matt and Gabby finish second. Good job by them.

–Ky and Alexa finish third. No surprise there. They’re strong.

–Dan and Rachel finish fourth and hug it out.

–I guess that big fight between them isn’t going to happen.

–Jeff and Kerra finish last and get twenty points.

–Lots of good assets to choose from.

–I fear for Mexico and Brazil.

–Dan has a back injury. Not good. That’ll take you out faster than just about anything.

–Time to call the medic.

–And that concludes the episode.

–Will Dan be forced to med tap? We’ll find out next week.

These two hour episodes are really too long, even when the episode, like tonight’s, is good. They could have spent a little less time on, well, everything.

I was also really disappointed with the bridge challenge. I was hoping for a proper bridge. Maybe that would have taken too long though. Still, couldn’t the bridge challenge been a longer challenge, say, five days, worth more points, etc. I want a true bridge building competition!

Episode Grade: B+

What did everyone else think?

See you next week on the Naked and Afraid Running Diary!

Episode Discussion Man this new season has been so boring imo. 2 episodes I shut off. Idk why they are changing it so much. 5 “content creaters” in a pretty forgiving environment just boring. This season just looks much easier to survive than every other season. I mean there’s not even any bugs or mosquitoes

Episode Discussion Im Enjoying Apocalypse

And for those who keep going on about it being a set up, actually think about what youre getting into… the season is called APOCALYPSE, the tone is meant to be as if theyre in a wasteland previously inhabited by civilization, you know as if a bomb has gone off. So of course theyve added some Extra bits and pieces to the scenary and area, and have you never watched the older versions of the show? Base camp is always literally around the corner, just out of view of the cameras with a full medical team and production staff.

Also theyre always in a private reserve or area where they can film, thats why theres always roads and clear trails because guess what someone was probably there the day before they started filming, half the time from places like the amazon the extraction point is literally at the edge of a massive plantation.

If you can suspend your disbelief for five seconds you might actually enjoy the show.

Im loving seeing how people are repurposing the old worn down structures and cars to create defensive bomas, i dont care if things like the sofas were placed there for them, of course they were, you have to manufacture interest.

So far one of my favourite teams, is steven lee hall jrs. They seem to be working together really well and have an awesome shelter but sorely need some food,

The waz’s team has been managing to get by, however russ is a nob and shouldnt even have attempted to come back for the show, he seems like a terrible person and his drama isnt fun to watch like jeff or tricky.

I feel bad for amber, she always seems so accident prone, getting injured for no reason and usually tapping because of it, then usually always paired up with a drama filled team, i am not enjoying the energy of the christian house builder who kept bullying the tent lady, who from what it seems has probably had to deal with some harsh realities.

Wes is calm and collected as always, wary of interlopers and looking fresh with his ear studs, maybe theyll be able to work out a good team dynamic in future episodes.
