Pets Renting a home in Japan 4 cats, one disabled with special needs.

I'm currently in plans to move to Japan in a couple years, if I can manage it. But I have 4 cats, one of which is disabled. Born without a hip girdle, she has since had her paralyzed back legs removed for better mobility and comfort. She scoots on the ground and gets around just fine. She can get around very easily, make no mistake. But she is incontinent, and still very much a special needs cat due to her condition.

What are renting options like given this situation? I hear it can be challenging to find a place to rent with pets in general. Maybe someone could give me some insight?

Your chances of renting an apartment with 4 cats are basically nonexistent. Finding pet friendly apartments in Japan is difficult in itself, but "pet friendly" nearly always means one pet, singular.

Your only real option is a house, but even that's a borderline impossible shot. Rental detached houses aren't nearly as common in Japan as they are in other countries. And you're going to run into the same sorts of pet restrictions with a house as with an apartment.

Unfortunately the only way this is likely to be doable is if you buy a house or condo/apartment.

Damn, that's what I was afraid of hearing. It sounds like I really don't have any other options. Buying outright, in of itself, even discounting the cost, is probably also going to be challenging.

Thanks for your insight.

We were able to rent an apartment that allowed a single cat and negotiate up to having 2 cats.

There are some rentals that would probably allow 4 cats, but they are likely to be extremely rare and would almost certainly be a place like outs which is basically brand new construction with amazing sound insulation. Seriously, when the fire department was coming though and testing everyone's alarms, I couldn't hear any other neighboring apartments alarms going off even though I couldn't hear myself think when they were testing mine.

Needless to say, this places are also more expensive.

On the flip side, when we were looking, we did see a bunch of detached houses for rent that would have likely allowed 4 cats as they even permitted larger dogs. Issue was, they are all more out of the way and usually very very outdated (1990s or earlier) and come with all the associated issues.
