Education Decision about studying Masters in International Studies in Japan
Hi everyone,
I recently got admitted to Waseda University’s Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies (GSAPS) for a Master’s in International Studies.
I know Waseda is a well-known university in Japan, but I’m overthinking whether GSAPS is the right choice for my career. I’m interested in working in recruiting, marketing, international business, or Japan-related global roles after graduation.
I’m currently at JLPT N3 and I’m planning to improve my Japanese, aim for JLPT N2, while also doing internships, networking, and building practical skills alongside my studies.
For people who studied at Waseda or know about job hunting in Japan:
Do you think GSAPS is a good choice for someone who wants to work in recruiting or marketing?
How valuable is Waseda’s name and network for international students?
Can this degree help with career options in Japan?
What should I focus on from day one to improve my job chances?
I know I may be overthinking, but I’d really appreciate honest advice from people who know the Japanese university/job market.

gsaps + waseda name is fine on paper, the real gate is japanese. most intl friends who made it into marketing / recruiting had n1 or damn close, plus solid internships. start job hunting early, join circles, career center, hit every career fair. network with obaachan-level small talk in japanese, not just english. degrees help a bit but language + connections win. also finding anything half decent now is a pain in japan too
