Online information says the site is possibly from an Acrocanthosaurus. Early Cretaceous, 100-125 million years ago.

This is SUCH a specific thing to be knowledgeable about. I can't believe how the universe, all of time, came together to weave infinite possibilities, and this is what that moment led to.

u/KrullTheWarriorKing Jul 05 '21

The TVA is lying to you.

u/CuteThingsAndLove Jul 05 '21

Such a good fucking show

29

u/lemondropPOP Jul 05 '21

I'm loving these marvel shows. The combinations of actors and character development is unlimited.

22

u/tubbytubby2by4 Jul 05 '21

The three Marvel shows have me hyped for future projects like the What If series.

That being said, I still miss the Netflix Marvel shows.

15

u/lagunadel Jul 05 '21

I just hope they bring Daredevil into the MCU at some point

I feel like they were the right idea at just the wrong time. Though maybe they paved the way for these current shows. Them along with Agents of Shield is some of my favorite TV shows of all time, it's a shame they don't get recognition officially

I mean at the very least they could've confirmed our homeboy Coulson was alive

Not to shit on this but there have been a lot of footprint hoaxes and there are a ton of cryptid people who follow this stuff closely. It’s a lot like the UFO scene.

How did those footprints last for 100-125 million years?

86

u/superhole Jul 05 '21

River dries up and the mud turns to stone over thousands of years. It's also incredibly rare, when you take onto account the millions of dinosaurs that walked there for millions of years.

25

u/sixty6006 Jul 05 '21 edited Jul 06 '21

.

69

u/superhole Jul 05 '21

Yes! Exactly! That is how they are preserved, then the river in OPs third picture in the album, eroded the softer material that covered the tracks.

Connecting Dinosaurs

69

u/vendetta2115 Jul 05 '21

What I don’t understand is…how are they still visible today? How have they not been eroded away? Were they buried for millions of years and just happen to have been uncovered by erosion in the last thousand years or so?

71

u/o7_brother Jul 05 '21

Keep in mind the footprints you are seeing are the 0.0001% that have not eroded away or been buried out of reach over the millions of years. That's why these kinds of tracks are fairly rare.

→ More replies (5)

33

u/Cherle Jul 05 '21

Very rarely do they last this long.

Most trace fossils were formed in soft mud or sand near a pond, lake, river, or beach. The imprints left by the organisms were quickly covered by sediment. The sediment dried and hardened before the imprints could be erased by water or wind. The sediment was then buried under more sediment and became compacted and cemented together to form rock. This process is much the same as the formation of body fossils.

Source: https://www.americangeosciences.org/education/k5geosource/activities/investigations/fossils/fossil-footprints

14

u/koshgeo Jul 05 '21

You're right with the last explanation.

Fossil footprints do not get made and then lay around on the surface for 100 million years. They get made in soft sediment, get promptly buried, the sediment gets cemented into rock during a very long period of burial, and then some time later (in this case ~100 million years later), those rocks are getting slowly eroded away and expose this particular layer to the surface again, eventually to be destroyed. So, you're a very lucky person to have been around at just the right time for it to be seen.

There are some sites where it isn't random luck, though. There are places where dinosaur tracks are exposed in quarries or other excavations, such as Dinosaur State Park in Connecticut, where they've built a museum around the excavation. There you can see an exposed surface covered with hundreds of dinosaur tracks, but also at the edges you can see some of them partially still covered over with layers of rock.

6

u/vendetta2115 Jul 05 '21

That’s cool as hell.

It also makes me wonder what priceless treasures—fully intact brachiosaurus skulls, mud imprints of T-Rex skin, some unknown evolutionary link in hominids, etc. has either been destroyed by mining or construction or just happened to erode away like 100 years before it could’ve been found. Or how many are sitting exposed to the elements right now that will erode away long before they’re ever discovered.

I especially think of all of the fossils likely buried under the ocean that will never see the light of day, that will either be eroded or subducted into the mantle in 50 million years. Or all the fossils buried under the Antarctic ice sheet that we’ll never see.

Its insane to think that a track like that sticks around for a hundred million years...from a single step of an animal.

Insane.

126

u/Riptide031 Jul 05 '21

How are they still visible today?

380

u/karlnite Jul 05 '21

They make the impression in silt or mud at the bottom of a river. The impression fills with heavier materials that flow by and “fall” out of the flowing water. Over time the silt is replaced with minerals but the difference in materials means the minerals form differently around the impression so it remains visible when later uncovered. Now that it is exposed it will wear and weather away quite quickly (compared to how long it took to form and sat there). Areas like this have the perfect conditions so fossil and foot prints are every where. Other places didn’t have the right conditions so we find no evidence or fossils, but stuff obviously lived there.

(My description of the process is probably really off, but basically it’s like a foot print in cement)

u/JoyKil01 Jul 05 '21

Great summary. Thanks!

Ah. It appears to now be searching for a mate. Logging into OkCupidTM , it is again disappointed to find no potential mates have returned its advances. But neckbeards are known for their perseverance. It will check again tomorrow.

Leanderthal Lady

4

u/WikiSummarizerBot Jul 05 '21

Leanderthal Lady

Leanderthal Lady, discovered in January 1983, is the skeletal remains of a prehistoric woman found at the Wilson-Leonard Brushy Creek Site (an ancient Native American campsite) in the city of Cedar Park, Texas, by the Texas Department of Transportation. The remains were also alternatively labeled "Leanne". Both names were inspired by the proximity of the site to the town of Leander, to the north.

Flyfisher for 30 years here. It's a really fun hobby which brings you much closer to nature. Don't fall for the insane prices of some of the bigger brands though. China has got some great rods and reels which are miles in front of anything available a decade ago for top dollar

The title kinda suggests that you discovered this all by yourself, when in reality it’s well known this area is full of tracks, yes?

he said „came across”… i could go to museum for example and say, „i came across this cool statue”, even though its well known its been there for a long time. i didnt read the title the way you suggested

If that's the river off the 183, there are more upstream that are deeper/more prominent. (Might be easier to get to when drier) We took a couple of our dogs there

There are a ton of track locations in various areas surrounding Austin (with in a couple hours I am meaning). I haven't been to Leander to look around, that's super cool!
