My dog bit two people, looking for information.
Update: looks like they're not going to come and take them or put down either of the dogs. Huge relief. We will be getting cited for the dogs at large however.
Not sure where to put this so I'm throwing it here, looking for information. On Saturday, my 2 dogs escaped my backyard and ran off. The side gate was unlatched so they were able to push it open. One of them is not friendly to strangers, and bit two people. The police were called, and they tased him trying to apprehend him. My girlfriend walked up on them and was able to calm him down and bring him inside before it progressed past that. They made a police report and explained that animal control would likely contact us today, but it's memorial Day so they're closed. We had a trip planned for this week, Tuesday-Sunday, and we're trying to figure out if they are going to show up during the week or not to investigate. We would want to be home if that was the case. I've read that there's a 10 day rabies quarantine, which we would still be in compliance with either way as they would not be leaving the house. Does anyone have any experience with Mesa animal control inspections? Are they prone to showing up unannounced?
Further info- neither of the dogs have a history of bites. This is both me and my girlfriend's first time dealing with a case like this.

Maricopa County Animal Control will definitely investigate...I would be as contrite and apologetic as possible. There will be a 10 day quarantine, and personally, I would not go out of town. If the rabies is updated and they're licensed, they can stay home, if not, they will be quarantined at one of their facilities or at a Vet on your dime.

Yeah it's looking like we're cancelling the whole thing. She's got a wedding to go to so I will probably just stay around with the dogs until the quarantine is over. Hopefully we get out of this okay

Do you own the home or rent? Your homeowners insurance probably covers the liabilities you have but be ready to have to make the decision to pay a lot extra in insurance cost and likely have to get rid of the dog.

Lock your gate. Control your dogs. You caused two people to be injured due to your reckless negligence. Cancel your trip because you are likely getting sued

Maybe dont have dogs you can't control?

Definitely not dogs who bite when they meet new people.
There's a difference between a dog who protects your house and a dog that attacks for no reason.

TLDR: if you can't keep your dogs in your property you shouldn't have dogs

I hope you never have an accident happen to your pets or your children then. And if it does I hope the people around you handle it with more grace than you've given others.

I worked for someone who dealt with their dog biting a friend of their daughter.
It was not severe but needed medical attention. Long story short they sued and they had to deal with it through the home insurance. Even though they offered to pay for everything.
I don’t know what you should expect but that’s what I’ve heard.

Not sure what you mean lol. Not something I wanted to disclose. They're not violent breeds either way

This is a wild story. In Mohave county not to long ago my dog bit my neighbor who was taunting my dog through the fence and ended up accidentally sticking his hand more over on our side of the fence than he intended to and my dog bit him near his elbow. Broke skin , bleeding and everything.
Guy called the police. Police told me to surrender my dog as a violent dog and they would have to do a 72 hour hold (he’s an Australian Shepard) to make sure he doesn’t have rabies and they MIGHT not even release him after that since he’s violent. I told the officer what happened (he didn’t believe me) but luckily my sister lived across the street at the time and her security camera actually caught the side of our house showing where the neighbor was taunting our dog pretty aggressively. The whole tune changed when he saw the footage and I was able to provide his shot records showing he was up to date with all shots including rabies and nothing ever came of it.
If I didn’t keep records and my sister didn’t live across the street for me to access her footage I don’t think we would’ve ever gotten Odin back. I can’t believe that your dog got out. Harassed the neighborhood , caused harm AND THEY LET YOU KEEP YOU DOG !!! wild. Literally the differences from just a county over is insane to me.
I hope you’re able to get this sorted out. And I DEFINITELY wouldn’t mess around with what they ask of you. While they are taking a relaxed approach now that very well could change if you do anything that shows you aren’t taking this seriously. Good luck friend! I hope this ends well for all involved !

I was also very surprised that he got tased and was still let back inside our house. I think a part of it is that Mesa animal control was off for the weekend. I'm just glad he wasn't shot.

Thank goodness for that! Truly!
I would give a call to animal control in the AM or even the police department first to see if the call made it as far as animal control on their end.
If anything it shows you are being responsible and proactive about it. It doesn’t matter if your dog has a history of biting . If he/she bites a person they get deemed a violent dog. It’s better to be proactive about the steps you take to better the outcome in your favor. Of only for the sake of your dog.
And do that something about that gate. If everything ends well for you this time that’s a blessing but I promise if your dog gets out again it may not end as well.

If your dogs are behind on rabies vacs, you probably should take care of that first.

No, you shouldn't, as it could affect the dog's quarantine process.
I am a former ACO in Texas, but the rules should be the same in Arizona.
It can mask symptoms.

Like I’m sorry OP but your dog bit not just one but 2 people😂 and it had to be tazed? I’m sorry but was your dog smoking crack or just THAT AGGRESSIVE. Im an Amazon driver in the valley and I carry heavy duty dog spray. I’ve held up someone’s package and put it right back in the van in their face and drove it back to Amazon. They can wait. I don’t fuck w people that brush it off and say “it’s nothing their nice”. Respectfully, AZ PEOPLE, FUCK OFF AND KEEP YOUR DOGS INSIDE, get off your ass and fix your holes in the fence. I know euthanizing is sad but you’re a liable neighbor now. Pretty sure back in the day if a dog even bit one person it’s 🔫or 💉. Also remember, as sad as it is, only YOU care about the dog that bit someone twice. Don’t mean to sound rude if this post does. Granted it’s the first time you’ve dealt with this but growing up it was always a super serious thing when I had dogs that they were not aggressive. Nobody wants to have to put their dog down just bc that dog wasn’t TRAINED to control itself. If my dog bit someone, sadly my dad would’ve made me take it out in the desert and do it myself. Also pretty sure Mesa animal control inspections are random. Thousands of crazy cat ladies throughout the valley with 200+ cats or a shit ton of dogs in their house. Animal control inspections are always gonna be random to catch you off guard at a random time and make sure the animals are okay.

You need a license and rabies vaccination a home quarantine. Otherwise MCACC will pick them up for a quarantine hold. You should also notify your insurer as you will likely be sued.

Your dogs weren’t two huskies, by any chance?
3
u/Turbulent-Beat5615 9d ago
No sir. Did a couple huskies get out too?

u/No_Amount_7886 9d ago
Yep. Just checking because they killed a litter of kittens in town and I thought if they were yours it would make it even more difficult for you.
Good luck.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I really hope the dogs are going to be okay. I can’t imagine.

They will be coming this week, I would cancel the trip. My dog bit someone who climbed over our backyard fence, and they came the same week and took our dog. They held him for a few days, required us to have him neutered (I fully admit we were a bit late on getting him neutered as a puppy), and then they returned him to us under house arrest.

I imagine it might be worse for us, as they were on the loose. Still nothing from mesa/mcc

If you plan to keep the dog they may want to put it down If so move the dog to a more distant undisclosed location

They don’t even know me and why would I care?

u/General-_-Snark 8d ago
You care enough to engage with strangers on this platform genius
0
u/iamsurfriend 6d ago
But you people are the ones that are engaging.
You don’t like my comment (since the truth hurts), so people bud in with comments like about how people loving their pets more than could ever love me.
So I said why would I care?
What does that have to do with care enough to engage with strangers?
Dont you understand anything or follow along?
Another low IQ dope.

I just want to mention that this is not them showing up unannounced. Your dog biting people is literally the forewarning that they will show up. They will be showing up this week especially since the individuals that they bit may need medical attention. You, as the owner of the dog, are liable for the cost.
