MD Nature Where is the best swimming hole in nearish to Baltimore?

Post image

I recently moved from Atlanta where 15 minutes in any direction was a natural spring and river that made for great weekend picnics hangs. It seems like every river in the DMV is polluted but, after seeing kids get out of Herring run this weekend with out gills or three arms, I thought I should ask where are the good spots to swim that I haven’t found yet? Are we swimming in the harbor? What are your thoughts?

Please check the bacteria levels in ANY of these suggested waterways before swimming in them. Most carry E. coli

Most of us do not have at home water tests. But you can find real time testing here for the Potomac and Anacostia: https://doee.dc.gov/service/anacostia-and-potomac-river-monitoring

And

Here for the Inner Harbor in Baltimore: https://www.waterfrontpartnership.org/water-quality-monitoring

For other areas (ie, Cascade Falls on the Patapsco Valley State Park), search the relevant state or local website.

That’s the good stuff though.

to be fair - bacteria levels vary by location and recency of rainfall! Baltimore Water Watch is Blue Water Baltimore's interactive map for water quality testing. It's a great tool to check before heading to your swimming spot! They rotate testing sites, but it is the reliable place to see if your swimming spot has been tested lately.

you may already know this, but: bacteria tend to be present shortly after rainfall, as stormwater inundates sanitary sewers and causes a mixture of both to run into waterways, especially downstream of densely settled areas. Considering that the harbor is the mouth of several waterways (mainly the Jones Falls, Gwynns Falls, and Patapsco rivers) you'll generally see elevated bacteria increasing downstream and heading towards the harbor. Most rivers and tidal waters will be clear from most storm runoff within about 48 hours of a rainfall event, though, unless there's a structural leak present (I know there's an active one by me in Stony Run unfortunately.)

so I don't swim within 48hrs of rain, and I try in general to swim in upstream locations. the Patapsco river up by Marriottsville Rd has many gorgeous clear-water spots to dip and soak, same with the Gunpowder and Little Gunpowder and lots of other little blue lines on the map! there's tons of great river spots for a little dip 'n' cool... IMO it is the best way to survive summer. go find your favorite!

Great point. I wouldn’t consider the Severn a “swimming hole” but used to spend most of the summer on/in it. Check out the readings after a good rain. I have seen dogs come out with infections and a good friend almost lose his arm from MRSA (yes, he did have an open cut when going in).

oh wow that's terrible

I’d imagine gunpowder

They do rent tubes at the NCR trail in Monkton.

Good luck with parking! It's almost impossible now

Park between Bradshaw rd and joppa farm road on rt.7

Super popular during the summer

Gunpowder State Park can mean a lot of different locations, one has a decent sized beach on the bay.

u/fireflash38 20h ago

Good news is, hike up any section of either the little or the big in the county and you'll probably find a decent spot to swim, picnic, chill or really do whatever. Same with the patapsco.

It is the largest state park in Maryland. So yes, yes it can.

2

u/071790 20h ago

Where are you to park around there?

2

u/slowwithage 7h ago

Also interested in this answer.

2

u/071790 7h ago

I used to swim near Woodstock bridge HC/BC border and also used to swim near Woodbine inn. The counties have tried to stop the fun at both locations by eliminating parking.

u/Fun-Cauliflower-1724 22h ago

You can drive to North Point State Park and swim in the bay

34

u/Accurate_Mobile9005 22h ago

Same with Sandy Point State Park.

26

u/drillgorg Baltimore County 21h ago

Or Gunpowder State Park. Or Rocky Point Park.

2

u/CaptainObvious110 15h ago

I've been there before and it was pretty nice over there.

Patapsco State Park

It was many years ago, but almost died from the infection I got while waiting for the antibiotics to kick in.

9

u/wairua_907 Howard County 21h ago

I was about to say Milford mills swim club and remembered it’s closed now, patapsco state park was a good spot

11

u/gat0r87 21h ago

We always go to either Daniels Dam or Hillbilly Beach

16

u/Sweaty_Handle_2526 22h ago

Yeah I always see people in the water at the Avalon section of Patapsco. It’s kind of amazing. I never thought I’d see so many people having fun in the patapsco river.

Beaver Dam is so much fun. They have a zip line into the quarry.

2

u/Fatpanther97 21h ago

Is beaver dam still open?

4

u/mlorusso4 21h ago

Yes. Oregon ridge beach is the one that was shut down

5

u/CatrinaBallerina 20h ago

Yes but overly expensive.

3

u/Rico_Rizzo 21h ago

My god nostalgia overload. I used to send some serious backflips off that zipline back in the 90s

1

u/CaptainObvious110 15h ago

oh wow that's awesome

11

u/Ornery-Grapefruit-47 20h ago

Inner Harbor

1

u/CalicoG 19h ago

Oh no hahahaha don't tell them that 😂

2

u/DyslexicScriptmonkey 13h ago

Are you trying to get someone ate by flesh eating bacteria????

2

u/slowwithage 7h ago

I saw folks jumping in it last year. No word on if they’re still alive though.

Lmfaoo hell nah cuddy

u/WanderingDude182 21h ago

Pot Rocks on the gunpowder if the bacteria isn’t high

Is that the Harford Road bridge over Herring Run? If so, I believe on the other side of the bridge, there is a natural spring coming out of the hill named Hall Springs. They used to have free concerts there (early 1970's). The bands would set up inside of one of the concrete arches and it sounds great!

Thanks for posting the picture. It brings back fond memories.

1

u/slowwithage 7h ago

Sure is. It’s become my favorite place in the city.

3

u/LittleDebbieGG 21h ago

Oregon Ridge is also a great spot!

3

u/h4rlotsghost 21h ago

They closed the quarry for swimming.

3

u/CaptainObvious110 15h ago

why

2

u/h4rlotsghost 10h ago

I believe the liability insurance was prohibitively expensive. They demolished the whole swim house structure.

1

u/LittleDebbieGG 21h ago

Oh that sucks

4

u/morfsucks 20h ago

Nearish? Oof. I was going to recommend Kilgore Falls ( don’t mind the name ).

3

u/Substantial_Row_7108 10h ago

West Virginia.

8

u/GracieandRose 21h ago

Nice try sucker!

19

u/MrMordy 22h ago

Ooooo if you go swimming in the harbor please report your symptoms over there next 7 days. For science for science.

2

u/CaptainObvious110 15h ago

yeah I agree

2

u/LittleDebbieGG 21h ago

Headless Harry’s!

2

u/LittleDebbieGG 21h ago

Just north of the Pioneer Pub on York Rd. My references show my age lol

2

u/wbruce098 10h ago

Cascade Falls at Patapsco Valley State Park is a lot of fun, and also has good hiking trails. I take my kids there every year.

Do be sure to check out water quality reports before going, but it’s probably fine this coming weekend until it starts raining.

1

u/slowwithage 7h ago

How old were the little ones when you started taking them on trails? I think I’m going to introduce mine to hikes this year.

2

u/the_anti-somm 8h ago

Hillbilly Beach up near Parkton

2

u/Elios000 Baltimore County 8h ago edited 8h ago

no said Sandy Point yet. also Gunpowder state park Hammerman and Rocky Point

u/Dr_Gonzo-4130 4h ago

Patapsaco state park specifically the Hollofield area or the gunpowder as suggested below

u/EastToWest79 1h ago

It’s not really a swimming hole, but Kilgore Falls at Rocks State park has a nice waterfall and there’s a small pool of water around it that at its deepest point is around 5 feet

4

u/GingerMan027 22h ago

Used to be turn right by the donut tree up falls road.

Park near the one field and walk to the quarry.

Snapping turtles, so don't skinny dip if you are a guy.

4

u/careful_jon 21h ago

It’s Pot Rocks but watch out for copperheads.

2

u/Just-Yesterday4159 11h ago

Patapsco State Park Avalon Area too. Gunpowder State Park Hammerman area has a beach on the Chesapeake Bay. You can swim in Cunningham Falls State Park Lake, but the water levels might be low from drought :/

2

u/shellymarshh Anne Arundel County 8h ago

There’s a beautiful lake at Cunningham too that’s always swimmable. I imagine w the several days of rain the falls are hopefully full atm.

u/Inner_Tadpole_7537 Baltimore City 2h ago

It's actually on the Gunpowder river

I’ll spot you like 3 Boh for the details.

u/BuffaloNo9011 6h ago

Lochraven Reservoir was so much fun when I was in college .

1

u/duck4129 6h ago

I hear the harbor is nice this time of year

1

u/boarbar 5h ago

Hammerman Beach isn’t really a hole, but it is a nice place you can swim with plenty of parking.

1

u/TheCosmicCharizard 5h ago

Drive all the way to the panhandle and go to Swallow Falls near DCL. The everything that runs off into rivers and streams around DC & Baltimore would give me the heebies to submerge myself in.

u/Top_Copy_693 28m ago

They were swimming in Herring run??? Oh naaaaanananana
