Hahaha it’s true though. I needed to get a birthday card and stopped in a store and it’s insane how empty it was

27

u/Potential-Formal8699 Jan 23 '26

Oh no, even the birthday cards are gone? /s

6

u/CelebrationEmpty4051 Jan 23 '26

Yeah lol I went to get a planner and stickers for it and the store was empty! Crazy lmao

5

u/Disastrous-Frame6683 Howard County Jan 23 '26

I had to grab a few things at green valley yesterday and it was a total war zone 😭

7

u/notevenapro Germantown Jan 23 '26

EVERYONE, was grabbing a "few" things.

7

u/40ozT0Freedom Jan 23 '26

We have an executive membership at Costco, so we can go in an hour early. The line to get in this morning was legit almost a quarter mile. I just measured it on google maps.

3

u/jeobleo Jan 23 '26

I considered going to Costco today and am glad sense prevailed. Got everything I needed in 15 minutes at Lidl instead.

2

u/donutfan420 Jan 24 '26

The line for Costco gas near me yesterday was over an hour. Like at that point the ~$5 you’re saving per tank isn’t worth it 😭

2

u/40ozT0Freedom Jan 23 '26

I used my senses and sent my wife lol. We just needed a couple things to cover us next week just in case the ice is going to be bad since its going to be so cold.

42

u/John_Wicked1 Jan 23 '26

I still like the jokes and memes….but on a serious note…why are we acting like this isn’t one of the projected bigger storms in a decade? It’s not like your normal annual snow that’s mostly gone the next day.

This is the time that abit of panic is warranted.

16

u/shadow1042 Harford County Jan 23 '26

Because the news/weather channels always hype this shit up and it usually ends up much less or in some cases nothing at all(i remember one year they hyped it up and we ended up with a warmer sunny day) and in 2010 they didnt hype anything and we got slammed

10

u/John_Wicked1 Jan 23 '26

That may be so but better to error on the side of caution than end up unprepared and lacking options because you didn’t take the issue seriously enough.

3

u/Ferret-mom Jan 24 '26

I agree. It is entirely possible we get nothing. It’s also possible we get over 2 feet of snow. The last time that happened in the DMV 55 people died, 600K+ lost power and the entire area ground to a halt for the better part of a week. The possibility that it is that bad makes the panic warranted.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Because unless you live out in the fucking woods you'll be on the roads by Tuesday and can buy food and toilet paper then. Maybe there are more 12+ person families in my neighborhood than I realized but people are buying doomsday prepper amounts of food in order to prepare for being inside for slightly over 48 hours.

1

u/FnakeFnack Anne Arundel County Jan 24 '26

I agree. This is the correct time to “panic buy.” Also, what people mean when they say panic buy is they’re assuming people are loading their carts up with 10 loaves of bread but anyone looking into other carts can see plainly that’s not the case. While it’s true people are probably doubling up on essentials, the other part of the stock problem is people are shopping out of sync with their normal grocery rhythm. You know, because of the natural disaster headed our way. The exact right circumstance to shop early and double up.

u/Zyncon Jan 23 '26

Our local forecast here in Wicomico went from 28 inches down to 4 inches within 2 days.

Sounds like it'll be another average normal snowfall, at least for us here on the Eastern Shore.

1

u/Zyncon Jan 26 '26

Update. Wicomico County got 2 inches and it’s already mostly gone from all roads and patchy in yards.

Looks like it was another average normal snowfall!

u/ForcedEntry420 Frederick County Jan 23 '26

Wife and I went in at like 8:30 last night and it was fine. A few items were sparse but we definitely got what we needed for a weekend inside.

I swear some folks act like they’re going to be sitting on the toilet continuously shitting and chugging milk for 72 hours straight. 🤣

7

u/Global-Plankton3997 Baltimore County Jan 23 '26

When I was a kid in 2010, there was 3 feet of snow. I also remember the one in 2016, but I don't remember how many feet there was.

7

u/EvilAbdy Baltimore County Jan 23 '26

I think 2016 was the back to back ones that both dumped like 2-3feet each.

1

u/ForcedEntry420 Frederick County Jan 23 '26

The first blizzard I remember was 1996. I dug a path out of our neighborhood to reach the street that had been plowed so my mom could drop me off at a convention that was taking place in town. I was 14 at the time?

4

u/Datboimerkin Jan 23 '26

It’s the milk that always gets me!!! 😂😂😂

2

u/ForcedEntry420 Frederick County Jan 23 '26

Right? I buy milk in denominations below a gallon because we just don’t use a ton of it. I saw someone last night with six gallons of milk in their cart. This isn’t rational behavior. 😆

5

u/jeobleo Jan 23 '26

They're just making milk pie and milk soup.

3

u/QuiteAffable Jan 23 '26

I agree. Personally I bought 20 1/2 gallons of milk in case civilization ends but we retain electricity in our homes

1

u/Equivalent_Sky4152 Jan 23 '26

2

u/ForcedEntry420 Frederick County Jan 23 '26

Mental imagery got ya eh? 🤣

1

u/Lavishness_Classic Jan 23 '26

I have 65 rolls of TP now. The GF is insane. Three of us living here, she is 4 days remote, but me and the daughter going into the office, use ~ one roll per week. Lol!

1

u/sundaycomicssection Jan 24 '26

Any stores I have gone to in the last couple days seemed totally normal.

12

u/templeofsyrinx1 Jan 23 '26

hey don't judge us we have painful snowmageddon syndrome

10

u/notevenapro Germantown Jan 23 '26

Yup. I bet OP does not even remember the double snow storm that resulted in gas stations running out of gas.

3

u/QuiteAffable Jan 23 '26

The gov’t shut down for a week but the caps game in town was held as planned and was a full house.

12

u/sunlightFTW Jan 23 '26

If you think we panic, you clearly have never lived in North Carolina.

6

u/Disastrous-Frame6683 Howard County Jan 23 '26

The Snow Panic Doctrine™ clearly states that the more south the snow goes, the more panic is necessitated

10

u/Top_Statement_9476 Jan 23 '26

Fun fact. I grew up in Omaha (I live in Bmore now) and used to walk past Warren Buffett’s home on my way to school. He has a heated driveway. So while all his neighbors are out shoveling, his squeaky clean driveway is just steaming. 😂

9

u/RidethatTide St. Mary's Jan 23 '26

How are lines at the dispensaries?

9

u/Cold_Elk947 Jan 23 '26

Asking the important question here.

I mean this isn't a nuclear apocalypse we're preparing for. We just need food for a few days, max.

Old Canadian trick here - if it's cold enough for there to be snow on the ground, it's cold enough to keep food good. Pack a cooler with some snow, put the stuff in, and stick it in the backyard

2

u/thecashblaster Jan 23 '26

1.5 days, the roads will be passable by noon on Monday

11

u/nobot4321 Jan 23 '26

If anyone thinks things are going to be shut down long enough that perishable food will run out, they’re a little over the top. Even if things are completely shut down for a full week (doubtful), your meat and veggies will last (unless we’re talking sliced avocado or something).

2

u/notevenapro Germantown Jan 23 '26

We have had ice storms knock out power for a good amount of time in parts of the state.

3

u/Disastrous-Frame6683 Howard County Jan 23 '26

People act like they have to shop to survive the rest of the winter whenever there’s snow. I come from Illinois originally and the snow shopping culture is not nearly so panicky there lol

6

u/notevenapro Germantown Jan 23 '26

So you mean Illinois? A place that gets regular snow and has the equipment?

Cannot compare the two.

2

u/notevenapro Germantown Jan 23 '26

Germantown, underground power power lines.

1

u/ManiacalShen Jan 23 '26

It's not like lack of refrigeration is a problem when the whole outside is a freezer+ice maker. My gas stove and I will be just fine with the mostly-perishable goods for a few days even if the power goes out.

1

u/thecashblaster Jan 23 '26

but if the power goes out, I can just put all the perishable food outside since it's ass cold?

5

u/TheUnderCrab Jan 23 '26

Man I just wanted to have fajitas at home tonight and I know the grocery stores are going to be wiped.

1

u/notevenapro Germantown Jan 23 '26

Lots of flank steaks ar wegmans

1

u/TheUnderCrab Jan 23 '26

Vegetarian house, but I do appreciate the tip :)

0

u/newredheadit Jan 23 '26

What are the main vegetables you use for fajitas? Trying to up my vegetable game

3

u/TheUnderCrab Jan 23 '26

1 red pepper 1 green pepper 1/2 a medium red onion  3 garlics cloves  Cumin Oregano  Chili powder/chipotle powder/paprika

That’s the base. I do them in the cast iron for the nice char.

If I want protein I’ll add chickpea, black bean, or the Chik’n from Gardein.

My partner is meat free while I’m low meat ( we don’t cook with meat at home but I’ll get burgers when out for example), so I’ve worked to expand my cooking to satiate both of us. SE Asia, Japanese, and Indian food are great places to start! Chana masala and stir fried tofu are staples in our home.

2

u/newredheadit Jan 23 '26

Nice, sounds delicious. Thank you for the ideas as we’ve been working on reducing our meat consumption

7

u/Sir_Earl_Jeffries Jan 23 '26

Why are people always buying shovels? How do we not own enough shovels? Every damn time there is a storm everybody buys a shovel. Do yall just toss them at the end of the season?

9

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Maryland has an ass load of transplants that move here to work for the federal government and lots of them are from the south. Even just Virginia. No all weather tires, no snow clothes/boots/shovels, and their relationship with snow is "when this happens the entire metro area is crippled so I need to prepare for the apocalypse and mass death" when in reality despite the reddit memes Maryland gets snow and ice every year and it's generally handled well.

3

u/Affectionate-Map2583 Jan 23 '26

I bought a new snow shovel on Wednesday. It's the first one I've bought in about 20 years. The old one is still useable but getting dinged up (from shoveling on a gravel driveway). I was also hoping that the other resident of my house can come help me shovel using both shovels at the same time.

2

u/Sir_Earl_Jeffries Jan 23 '26

Good one! You’ll be out there double fisting shovels.

3

u/thecashblaster Jan 23 '26

pro-tip - get a push handle shovel and save your back

2

u/Ok_Pickle_3120 Jan 23 '26

I've seen some people actually do this lol go look at Facebook Marketplace if you want to see a bit of how weird it gets

2

u/ALynK73 Jan 24 '26

…They aren’t disposable!?

/s

2

u/Disastrous-Frame6683 Howard County Jan 23 '26

Omg I alway have the same thought too, like seriously even just a cheap plastic one can last years. How does the shovel market still have this much demand??

5

u/sleight42 Jan 23 '26

Snow isn't here yet and I'm already freaking out. So...

4

u/Disastrous-Frame6683 Howard County Jan 23 '26

Step one: freak the fuck out

Step two: panic buy everything <- you are here

2

u/sleight42 Jan 23 '26

Nah. Our basement almost always looks like we panic bought our shelf-stable groceries. If you have the space, it beats multiple runs to the grocery store.

Now I just need the power to stay on so that our frozen goods don't have to get stored on the porch.

3

u/Coeur_0 Jan 23 '26

I went for my normal grocery run yesterday because I was about to run out of food. Basically no fruits or veggies, and very limited meat selection. I happily left with only what I need for at least the next few days. I am not concerned about not having food. Worst comes to worst, and I eat some ramen for dinner for a few nights.

3

u/debaser64 Jan 23 '26

Time to dust off your parking spot chairs!

2

u/greenmariocake Jan 23 '26

Time to storm TJs!

2

u/Tylanthia Jan 23 '26

I've never gotten bad investment* advice from Warren Buffett.

*S&P 500 index fund and hold.

2

u/FartCloudintheSky Jan 24 '26

The BJ’s Wholesale in Bowie had no bottled water. A snow forecast must make people thirsty.

2

u/TaylorWK Jan 23 '26

People act like the majority of Marylanders live in bumfuck rural middle of nowhere with no neighbors for miles. If there's a storm, streets will be plowed and stores will be open.

9

u/Alternative-Score-35 Jan 23 '26

In 2016 my street wasn't plowed until a solid week after the snowfall. I live in Baltimore City.

13

u/sllewgh Jan 23 '26

And some people forget that many Marylanders DO live in rural areas that are not only going to be less accessible, they're going to get a lot more snow.

5

u/notevenapro Germantown Jan 23 '26

In the 28 years I have lived here there has been about 8 times where side roads were not plowed for 3 tov4 days. Not super bad but it happens.

State DOT will be focusing on state highways and county will be focusing on snow emergency routes then streets that have ride on routes.

1

u/Sir_Earl_Jeffries Jan 23 '26

2016 was the last time I remember it being that bad. I absolutely milked it to get out of work but stores were still open the morning after the storm.

3

u/notevenapro Germantown Jan 23 '26

We walk to longhorn, sat at the bar and had stesk n beer. Only the bartender and cook were there.

1

u/Cute_Sassy247 Jan 30 '26

IT'S STEAK

1

u/notevenapro Germantown Jan 30 '26

Thsnks dad.

6

u/MayorMcCheezz Jan 23 '26

Maybe in the city. But it’ll be days before the back roads of suburbia get plowed.

2

u/ericmm76 Prince George's County Jan 23 '26

It really depends on when it snows and how much.

After the 2016 snow schools were closed for a week or more. During Snowmageddon, I don't really remember all that well but it was really bad.

1

u/tacitus59 Jan 23 '26

And it can vary dramatically place to place - been in the 'burbs for over 40 years (and same location for almost 40 years) and some storms its been quick, a day at most - but one post 2000 storm it was 4-5 days before they cleared my side street.

In the city, because there are so many streets it can take awhile. LOL - at least with Trump around perhaps the EPA will not be complaining about snow being pushed into the harbor (which has happened in the past) or perhaps he just won't care (who TF knows).

2

u/Osfan_15 Jan 23 '26

Better than the dumb assholes who didn't prepare and will try to leave the house Sunday.

1

u/SerialSection Rockville Jan 23 '26

wait, there's a second snowstorm??

1

u/Affectionate-Map2583 Jan 23 '26

That's how I read it at first, too, but that's not what it says.

However, the Weather Underground 10 day forecast does show 1.5" of snow next Sunday. Looks like it's ramping up into the following Monday but I can't see it since it's day 11.

1

u/bondbird Jan 24 '26

Well, I would rather be a Freakin' Marylander standing in the grocery store line, than a Texan that thought it would never happen to them ...

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

15” of snow and MD goes insane

1

u/Opinionated-Raven Jan 23 '26

Funniest part about this is that it will only snow for a single day and I'm wiling to bet that the amount of snow we get is way over blown. I bet we get less than 6inches here in the DC metro area.

3

u/ericmm76 Prince George's County Jan 23 '26

Better to be over prepared than under prepared.

1

u/Disastrous-Frame6683 Howard County Jan 23 '26

I never trust snow forecasts honestly, way too unreliable. They’re always like “5000 INCHES OF SNOW ITS THE END OF THE WORLD” leading up to it and then last minute change it to 0.5 inches

-2

u/baldiedc Jan 23 '26

Is that picture real or AI, it’s so hard to tell these days
