It's where you want to get crabs.

They get their crabs from TX and Louisiana mostly

I feel so thankful to have a relative with a crabbing license for this exact reason.

I order for a food bank and was so excited when I logged into Maryland food bank to make my order and saw everything was covered by grant… all FREE! We stocked up!

u/JeepzPeepz Nov 06 '25
That seems like a neat job. What’s the title of the position and how’d you end up doing it? If you’re up for sharing.

Not free, taxpayers. You’re welcome
57
u/Purplepassion235 Nov 06 '25
Yeah I’m a taxpayer too, I’d rather see my taxes going to feed people than subsidizing billionaire
37
u/Strange-Effort1305 Nov 06 '25
This is what taxpayer money should be spent on. Weak people are so groomed by billionaires to think only they deserve to get tax money.
10
u/DreamWeaver80 Nov 06 '25
Don't be obtuse. They obviously meant that their organization did not have to spend its own funds.

Maryland is a democratic stronghold, and it’s a wealthy state. I don’t care what people have to say about SNAP, I don’t want to see children suffering period. Maryland’s governor doesn’t want to see children starving because the GOP is trying to take away all government subsidies and turn the country into a fascist Authoritarian nation which only benefit the wealthy. Sorry I’m sleepy and this is poorly worded.
69
u/HiFiGuy197 Nov 06 '25
And it’s got a ton of furloughed Federal employees, so food banks are getting a double whammy.
1
u/Agitated_Fix_4045 Dec 07 '25
Maryland is billions of dollars in debt due to mismanagement by democrat leaders who are running the state into the ground while also likely robbing it blind

And there are valid concerns about abuse of these programs but yes, children should not have to suffer if their parents are abusing the system (I'm not saying that all people on snap are abusing it, So please don't misinterpret)
No one is abusing it to any degree that matters. A single person gets under $200 a month. I've had employers steal more than that from me with bullshit calculation of hours, promised benefits, or health care (all three from a single employer even). Going after tax evasion for a single small company could feed 10 starving families at a time.
The process to sign up for SNAP and re-qualify is a burden on the most vulnerable members of our society, and the current process is more involved than filing your taxes, which the GOP has no problem assuming is correct. All of this for families that generally have lower education, less time, often disabilities or elderly to care for, and have other already proven reasons why they currently are so poor they need help to eat.
Have you ever applied for SNAP or been food insecure?
the people who are supposed to be running our government on all sides can get their heads out of their asses
The USDA is 100% an executive branch, and the Trump administration has been holding contingency funds against court orders. There is only one side that could have averted this and didn't. Why don't you try not buying food for 2 weeks and see how well you do?

I think it’s really tacky and nasty for Trump to withhold SNAP. When Americans are paying taxes and tariffs. We have the money. If he wants to make changes he to reopen the government and propose legislation.
-10
u/Jmend12006 Nov 06 '25
I think the snap benefits should only be used for nurturing food, formula, and diapers. I always think that cards should include a picture of the individual buying the items so they can’t be used by anyone else.

I agree with you there is waste, fraud and abuse in nearly every entitlement program. But, we need to feed the children regardless of a government shutdown.

The grassroots efforts have been pretty impressive too. I've seen a bunch of free little libraries switch to pantries, tons of food drives, and increased donations to food related charities. Everywhere I look, I see helpers right now. But this is, of course, a liberal stronghold with a bunch of federal workers. Public service is a big thing here and no one wants anyone going hungry.

u/ImInBeastmodeOG Nov 06 '25
It's a map of who hates Americans, besides their own selfish ass, and who doesn't.
Great job Maryland!

I am from one of the not so great states and I feel incredibly fortunate to live in Maryland now. I wake up grateful for it every day.

u/Objective_Boat8080 Nov 06 '25
I know that marylanders private and public organizations all over the state are also thinking of ways to help our federally employed neighbors. It also feels like the message that cash is King has really come through with less people having can donation drives and more people understanding that cash donations go farther.

I would hope so, our taxes keep going up, auto registration has doubled in the last 10 years, and I barely see any constructive highway work done where I live lol The money has to go somewhere. Not to mention, supposedly the stadiums and casinos are bringing in a ton of profit and tax money so where is that going? I am happy to see that Maryland is working to keep people from going hungry.
2
u/TehRedSex Anne Arundel County Nov 07 '25
I’m late to this but other states have already stated covering the cost of the full payment to recipients SNAP accounts starting last night and Maryland isn’t one of those state. My home state of NJ just started doing it today as well as CA, IL, WA, WI and OR. I think I even saw some in NC and other states covering the cost with the hope that the court order holds. I’m not saying what Wes Moore and MD is doing isn’t awesome but other states are doing more to tackle the issue so no one is hungry and gets immediate help.
2
u/ApprehensiveArmy7755 Nov 08 '25
Bottom line is I have no problem helping Americans and have zero interest in helping other countries out when our schools suck in most places and people need jobs and housing. And anyone making over a million a year- can afford to give back. Sorry.

u/Downfall722 Nov 06 '25
This map kind of sucks?. Why is increase in food bank funds brown as if it’s blank? Why is Direct Financial aid pink? The colors make a terrible infographic.

Moore wasn’t going to cover them. But the pressure was , on and it would have been a bad political decision on his part.

Your complaint here ... is that he listened and did the right thing? One of the few governors to do so? Interesting.

He absolutely initially resisted. When he announced food bank funding Friday, it was explicit that this was his whole response to the crisis at that time. It was only later he caved to pressure and did the right thing.

You gonna go precinct by precinct with payback, you might wanna look at Dundalk before Garrett (in which a grand total of 11,305 votes were recorded in the '22 gubernatorial).

NM’s flag is simpler and more aesthetically pleasing… and it’s also stepping up.
MD is a solid second place though.
10
u/shokolokobangoshey Nov 06 '25
Bro are you trying to start a fight?!
0
u/Satyrsol Nov 07 '25
It's hard to find a more recent survey, but generally New Mexico's flag takes the top spot. Personally speaking, I like Maryland's but it's a lot more "busy" visually. I haven't seen a survey that puts MD above NM.

This map is not showing what percentage of snap being covered. It is categorizing the ways in which states responded. Although the colors do obviously imply certain approaches/states being better than others.
I do agree it is a bad map though. It certainly implying more than it should be. For example some states may actually be covering more of the need despite not being in the nice bright blue category.
10
u/762_54r Nov 06 '25 edited Nov 06 '25
Neither the state nor food banks can cover the gap for SNAP. It’s exponentially more.
Over what timeframe? Can you tell us the date when the shutdown ends and fed benefits resume since you know that info?

I guess the state should do nothing now. If they’ll starve in 8 weeks, they might as well start starving now, yes?

What about last months missed snap deposit? I had to go off of what was left from my September deposit. I won't get anything until the end of November.
This government needs a reset. Remove all politicians that use us residents as leverage for their gains. They are disgusting.

Completely nuetered by the fact that the support of furloughed feds is severely lacking.
3
u/shokolokobangoshey Nov 06 '25
In this very thread there are people already bitching and moaning about the meager support (that probably can’t last long) the state is providing. Someone is whining about having to pay more for tags. Can’t please anyone
1
u/LeMuiexm Nov 06 '25
You can get unemployment - maybe. If youre still working, but not getting paid, you can get a loan And the wonderful Gov offered a massive $700 loan to pay bills.
All it does it attempt to profit off of misfortune and show how completely out of touch with reality the state is. Most feds are woefully underpaid and likely dont have much padding to rely on. And dont even worry about all the contractors that are worse off in the long run. .
SNAP is critical but its also a headline grabber. The whole thing makes me doubt Moore and his long term intentions
-25
u/FutureHendrixBetter Nov 06 '25
Yeah so awesome can’t wait for my tags and emissions and other taxes to go up even higher to cover these costs hooray 😃

While probably technically true, South Carolina has put in $233 million to boost food supplies. I was surprised to be informed of that.
