It's Here! New MacBook Pro 16” M5 Pro
Very excited to start using this new MacBook Pro 16”. Upgrading from a 2019 MacBook Pro i9 which is starting to wear down, lost a usb-c, fans run like crazy and overheats as soon as I open Photoshop. I have been researching for the past month for which one to get and all the reddit suggestions and people’s experiences plus a few YouTube reviews led me to this spec. Thanks to places like reddit where people can go and put their experience on what they have and give other people an idea of what they need for their usage.
My Specs
M5 Pro Processor
64GB Ram
2TB Storage
I run our family business on this with a large online store and use photoshop, indesign and acrobat editor and while the old Mac was ok, it was on 6 -7 days a week for at almost 10 hours per day. It had a good run and owes me nothing. I had 64gb ram on that too and I wasn’t going to go for any less.

Help Should I shut down my MacBook every night or just close the lid and let it sleep?
Hi, I got a MacBook Pro M5 Pro yesterday and this is my first time using a Mac.
I usually work during the day and then go to sleep at night. Should I shut down my MacBook before going to bed, or is it better to just close the lid and let it sleep?
I've been a Windows user for years, so I'm not sure what the recommended practice is on macOS.

It's Here! Old and new
My new 14” MBP (48GB:1TB) is here (right), next to my 14” M1 Pro MBP. I’m setting it up intentionally to minimize the number of applications it will run. I’ve written several posts on my blog where I go through my setup from scratch, providing rationale for my decisions, for those who are interested.
The new laptop will be used for design, academia, technical writing / blog posts and general day to day tasks. I work mostly in Photoshop and Illustrator. The old laptop still works fine (81% battery after five years), and my wife will be using it once I’ve set up my M5 Pro completely.

Discussion Really just noticed a little detail in Word on MacBook Pro
It turns out that when you open Word on a MacBook Pro, the canvas size automatically adjusts to match a real-world A4 sheet of paper... I think I might have realized this way too late. really super convenient for comparing image sizes or checking dimensions before I print.
But that means they probably set it up specifically for every Mac model, which is a really nice touch!

Discussion Best laptop experience I’ve ever had.
galleryThe last laptop I owned was back in 2016. I’d always bought rather expensive windows laptops and was always disappointed with the quality control and how janky they felt.
Eventually I decided that if I ever bought another computer that I didn’t build personally it would be a Mac.
Fast forward to now with my base model M5 MacBook Pro 24gb. Honestly probably a bit overkill for my needs but I was drawn in by the extra features that come on the pro (HDMI extra usb-c etc).
I keep a ton of stuff open at once. I like keeping pretty much everything open because it feels tedious to “set up” my workflow the way I like it.
I was so impressed when I decided to take a break and play some rogue trader. The game runs buttery smooth and I didn’t have to close so much as a single safari tab.
Not only that but the fans haven’t even ramped up to an audible level and I’m still in the green on memory pressure. As for the M5 chip it’s barely cracking 30% load.
I thought I’d share my experience with some like minded people!

Joined the Club! Just pulled the trigger on a MacBook Pro M5 Max with 4TB SDD/128 Ram
Coming from a 2019 16” i9 with 1TB/16ram. I have to be honest, I don’t need these upgraded specs, but I’m a huge computer geek and I like running local LLMs, music production, building apps, video editing, and video games. None of these things make me money but they bring me joy.
I use my MBPs and iPads for 7 years on average for work and for play and I wanted to know for sure I’d have no infra limitations for the next 7 years, no matter which areas of creation I want to explore.
For those on the fence about if you need a certain spec, if you’re lucky enough to be able to get it and it brings you joy, I say send it!
Edit: I got the 16”!

Discussion Macbook Pro 16 inch M5 Pro
Anyone had issues with the webcam not appearing available? tried the fix of killing the services and a hard reset no luck so far. Looks like the webcam audio is fine (This was working since last week with no issues), this also goes for via docking station with an external webcam. I work in IT and the device is managed by JAMF we don't have any policies blocking the webcam etc. I've only had the device 4 weeks and it's still in excellent out of the box condition.
Thanks.

Discussion Blown Away Today
Bought a MacBook Pro M5 Pro for invoicing when I’m away from home. I have an iMac M3 already in my home office. Today during billing I ran my MacBook Pro and iMac as extended display. Previous to these two Macs, I had been a windows pc user since elementary school. Coming from working in data engineering for 13+ years, extended screens with a monitor was my thing. I couldn’t work without a second screen.
Today, I full-on experienced the simplicity and ease of the Apple ecosystem. The fact you can quickly switch which device you want your trackpad or keyboard to work on or which device you want to extend the screen from was other worldly to me. I realize to most this may be small beans. For me, it made my day so much more productive and efficient. I am so busy. The quicker I complete tasks of any measure, the happier I am right now. I am so glad I made the purchase of both devices. Wonderful investment. It is game changing for me.
If you weren’t aware of this feature and are in need of it, I highly suggest it.
Really needed to share my excitement for Apple helping me be more efficient and productive. What features or capabilities make Apple shine for you? Maybe there is more I don’t know about that could help or it may help someone else.

Joined the Club! Bought my first MacBook Pro
galleryAbout a month ago I saw a YouTube video from DankPods about upgrading an old MacBook Pro, and using it as a dedicated iPod sync machine. I thought that would be a fun project since I have a pretty decent iPod collection and some of them are flash modded. I went on eBay and found a mid 2012 15 inch unibody MacBook Pro with a core i7 for $100 USD.
It’s in surprisingly good shape for its age. Almost no cosmetic damage and everything about it works great. The RAM upgrade only cost $40, so I did that one as soon as I got it. I did a fresh install of macOS Mojave to get the old iTunes back. Just last weekend I upgraded the storage. It went from 4Gb RAM and 500Gb HDD to 16Gb RAM and 2Tb SSD. Now this thing is faster than my current main laptop (Razer Blade 15 with 32Gb RAM 2018 model).
This is my first time using a macOS. I was a little surprised that even though it’s 14 years old and running an outdated OS, that it still communicates with my iPhone and iPad effortlessly. I’m liking it so much that it makes me want to get a new MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro chip ASAP.

Help RAM buildup Premiere Pro on Macbook
Machine: M4 Max Macbook Pro 16-inch with 48GB Ram and 1TB disk. I have this one project that keeps building up RAM usage upon exporting up to about 100GB when my mac forcec me to close the application. Other project dont have this issue. All caches and logs have been cleared. The app and machine have endured multiple software updates. But the problem keeps happening. It’s a fairly heavy 4k 25p 30m timeline with multiple videofiles and effects, however this machine should be able to handle it or at least try to.
Is it an Adobe bottleneck or some corrupt Mac file, or anything else. I don’t know what YouTube video to watch for solving thjs issue. Who knows what to do?
(For mods, I hope this advice post belongs here and that I’ve given enough details)

Help Help me decide, M5 Base vs Pro
Got some research funding with my new job, and it's time to buy a new computer! Also want to get before RAM prices go up.
Work Uses: Professor doing Qualitative Research (MaxQDA, NVivo), Python, R. Scraping and data-sciencey work to be added to work flow as well. Podcast producing.
Fun Uses: The Sims 4, Ableton Live.
Current Machine: 13" Macbook Air M1 (2020), 16GB Ram, 1TB HD. HD is a little full.
I mostly use the machine docked to my monitor. I travel to the office with my computer 1x week during the fall/winter semesters, and work at a coffee shop 2x a week. As I've been fine with a 13" MBA, I think the 14" will be fine. I can purchase and submit for reimbursement, so no school admin junk on my computer.
In the summer, I like to work on patios in the sun, or in parks at picnic tables, so was thinking about the nano screen for that reason. However, my iPad pro with a nano screen did scratch, despite always being in a case with a cover. You can only see the scratch when the screen is off.
I want the pro over the air for the fans, screen, ports, and speakers - I haaaaate not having an HDMI port, given that my school has no usb-c cables for connecting to the big screen, and I always forget my adapter. My computer before the air was a pro.
I'm debating between:
Macbook Pro M5 base: 32GB, 2TB, Nano - $3601 CAD
Macbook Pro M5 Pro: 64GB, 2TB, Nano - $4631 CAD
I'm sure I could make do with the base, but I feel like I've got the extra $1000 and kinda just want the fancy machine even if it's overkill?

Help 16” M5 Pro w/48GB of RAM for $2,350 a good deal?
I need a new Mac and was originally deciding between an M5 Air or a 14” Pro with 32GB of RAM, which honestly would cover 95% of my current workload.
I work in data science and use a lot of AI workflows, but right now I mostly rely on cloud LLMs. I’ve wanted to experiment more with local models for fun, but I can’t really justify spending $3k+ on a machine.
Now a friend is selling his month-old 16” M5 Pro with 48GB of RAM. Offered it to me for $2,350 because he got a new work setup.
At that price, is this basically a no-brainer over a new Air/32GB setup which would cost $1600 or a Pro for $1800? Or am I overestimating how useful the extra power and RAM will actually be for local AI work? Size isn’t a factor as mostly work at my desk.

Help Help! M1 MacBook Pro 13”
A MacBook Pro M1 was given to me after someone had broken the screen on it. I was told it worked even when the screen was broken, but hadn’t been turned on for a couple months. Now it makes this sound when plugged in and after. Seems to be trying to turn on but fails.
Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

Help MacBook Pro 16” (2021) keyboard coating flaking off? White powder comes off with fingernail
I recently bought a refurbished 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021) and I've noticed strange patches appearing on several keys (E, D, C, Option, Command area). I scraped the Command button completely so it looks smooth now.
The affected areas look lighter than the surrounding surface and appear almost chalky. If I scratch them gently with my fingernail, a white flaky/powdery material comes off. It doesn't seem like normal shiny key wear from typing.
I'm trying to figure out whether this is:
- A degraded coating on the keycaps/palm rest
- Some kind of residue or contamination
- Damage from cleaning products, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, etc.
The keyboard works perfectly and this is purely cosmetic at the moment.
Has anyone seen something similar on a 2021 MacBook Pro? Were you able to clean it off, or was it permanent coating damage?

Help M5 chip more ram, or M5 pro chip 24gb ram?
Hey,
I’m looking at getting a new MacBook Pro 2026 model.
Currently using a M1 36gb RAM MBP.
I’m torn between getting the base M5 chip and adding 32gb of RAM or getting the M5 pro chip with the standard 24gb RAM. Can’t really afford the extra to get the 48gb RAM.
I am a digital designer so use various graphic designer softwares and also video editing software.
Which model is best for me?
Thanks in advance!

Tips M5 vs Pro for DVD encoding
Hey everyone,
I’m currently looking at a new MacBook Pro and trying to decide between the base M5 and the M5 Pro.
My main use case is to rip my personal DVD collection (home videos, family recordings – no commercial discs) so I can watch them on my iPhone. I have around ~50 DVDs that I want to digitize.
On top of that, I regularly shoot family videos with my iPhone 17 Pro Max and want to cut them into proper family videos – so video editing is definitely part of my workflow too.
Is the base M5 good enough, or does the M5 Pro make it a whole lot more fun to work with?
