Built a lacrosse goalie stats app after getting frustrated tracking games on paper — looking for testers

As the title suggests, my son’s HS coach had us parents tracking goalie shots on paper all season. It was useful enough at halftime, but after the game the paper usually just disappeared into a bag somewhere.

In the part of my life that helps pay for my son’s lacrosse habit, I work with data a lot, so I started messing around with building something that could actually track trends year to year instead of just tally marks for one game.

The goalie app was the first thing I split out because it seemed like the biggest pain point, but I’ll probably end up breaking a few other individual stat tools out of the larger team app over time too. (Faceoff for boys, Draws for girls and offensive efficiency)

Right now it tracks:

  • shot locations
  • saves/goals allowed
  • blocked shots
  • save %
  • game history/trends
  • goalie heat maps
  • recruiting-style graphics
  • iPad support for sideline tracking

My main goal has just been making it simple and fast enough to use during a live game. I still want to actually watch my kid play too.

I’d love to get a few parents/coaches/goalies willing to try it during summer ball and give honest feedback. Happy to send some promo codes out to anyone interested. Figured I’d make the promo codes long enough to get through summer ball so people can actually use it for a while before giving feedback.

Also, while my son plays boys lacrosse, I’d absolutely love feedback from the girls side too since I know goalie tracking and recruiting matters there just as much. There is setting in there to set the goalie to boy or girls so the field view renders correctly.

Would also love feedback on:

  • what goalie stats actually matter to you
  • what current tracking methods/apps are missing
  • anything you wish existed for goalie development or recruiting

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/laxgoalieiq/id6767604702

My son’s actually a middie, so I’m definitely learning as I go on the goalie side of things. Anything the goalie world can teach me would honestly help a lot.

Anything useful I learn from this I’ll probably work into the larger team stat app too, since that’s shaping up to be more of a coaching/team tool overall.

TLDR: built app for goalies want some people to test for me will give free access for summer ball

Does your team not load stats into anything for the league? We report all of our stats after every game to Sportability.

We load the standard points, GB, TO etc. but our coach was having us (parents) keep extra stats. Like where the goalies are weak theirs and ours. Faceoff tendencies. Shooter tendencies. We had 5 different parents keeping different stats

Not at all. 6/7 grade boys.

ahhh... yeah, little kids. Stats are so iffy at that age anyway. But as a fellow data nerd and goalie parent, I salute your efforts.

oops you're not the OP... but anyway... it's friday.

I’ve been using it for about six weeks now. I’ve logged almost every shot in goal and found the heat map particularly interesting. I like how that map transforms into trends and skill suggestions. There are a few quirky UI tweaks that would make the UX (for me, at least) a little better. For example, it would be nice to “undo” more than one instance of a goal when using the heat map. I suppose it may need a “redo” button to even out that feature. Great app! Looking forward to updates.

Oh. I assume there is another app out there doing the same thing. I didn’t find it when I was building mine. I just finished building it and it just got approved on the App Store.

That’s funny! I pulled the name because the team app I am coding for we called LAXStatIQ and so as we pull the different sections out we just subbed in position for the Stat part. The different parts I am pulling out are the goalie, FOGO, and shooter sections. Working with out HS girls coach for the Draw portion and she gave me the different stats needed for their goalie and shooters

wow are you that good to be able to see where everything was from across the field? Or are you watching film after?

We do the stats in game. We had the FOGO dad on faceoffs, I did goalie tracking another 2 did the standard stats, one spotter and one recorder and then we had last one at the table with penalties and time of possession. Our coaches are all data guys so they wanted them in game but we didn’t know what to do with them after. The LAXStats project is all that in one but overall plan is to have multiple iPads, iPhone that can all fill in one data file that coaches can access mid game or post game. ( I get a little money from booster club for the DB that gives access to everyone. Still not to the point of multiple devices but getting there)

StatDog does this. https://statdog.live

We have a Veo camera and load it to Hudl and it does stats and other analysis for our coach. So then we just have a spotter scorekeeper and timer at the table.

I stand behind the goal and watch from there. Every quarter.

Eh I’d set up a camera so I can watch the game! That’s too much. I score keep at the table but I can still see the game.

We looked at doing that but our coaches wanted to be able to see the stats at halftime. Example as to why with the goalie tracking the 2x Offensive POY of the year for our state is the lefty attack man. If went left we slid early, he still scored but we did learn he has never scored a goal from the right hand side of the goal in 6 games against us since we started tracking goals last year. After game 4 we never slid to him on the right side again. 4 was first game when we used tech to track and then I dug out all the papers to confirm.

You play six games against the same team in one season?

2 years. They are in our conference so 2 games there and met them in the playoffs both years.

That’s wild! I assumed it was for the app I was already using bc of the name.

Thanks for the shout out! That is my app there and there are ways to undo and edits results in the app! But I’m glad you are enjoying it. We have had some great feedback on the app so great to hear you use it

I’d love to be apart of testing this summer, let me know if you want me to, I think it’d be great for tournaments. Thanks so much, this is really cool.

How did you track goalie stats on paper before the app?

1

u/mklapheke26 9d ago

We use 2 pieces of paper one with the field drawing on it and one with goal on it. We use Xs and circles to mark each shot. X is a miss or save and gets marked field page first then where it went on second page. If a missed or saved shot the players number is written and then X’ed out so you can still see the number if goal circle with player number inside the circle. Underlines meant it was a bounce shot.

We do practically the same thing. I’ll give the app a shot and let you know what our team thinks.

I’ll send you a code! When I get the team app done. I’ll send you a code for that as well. Not a full polish yet and a bug I can’t find but when I get it done I’ll shoot it over to you

Why is every sub I'm in full of people spamming their shitty apps that AI wrote for them. It's endless. Everyday, all day. Subs need to ban all app discussions.

I get where you are coming from and a lot of this AI stuff will end up with issues and lack the backend support. But there is some stuff out there that wasn’t written by Ai, took years to develop, and has been adopted by top teams in the country.

I would say when you are looking at an app find its footprint.

Is it just an app for another sport reskinned? Can you find the people behind it on linked in? Was it developed by lacrosse players/coaches? Does the logo and media look ai generated or authentic?

I would love a code. Trialed it and maybe have some
Tips from us and a D1 goalie
