M&S new “Only Ingredients” line seems very promising - picked up a pack of the pork sausages today

Ingredients list for the products are exactly what the front packaging says, nothing hidden in the ingredients list.

The sausages are amazing and honestly taste just as good as bog standard! They’re actually how I prefer my sausage, no brown sugar, rice flour, “rusks”, maltodextrin or any of that other garbage.

These seem quite promising for people who miss these items but don’t always have the time to make them from scratch to avoid the carby fillers.

Heck pork sausages are also good for keto and taste amazing. I’ll try the M&S range next time I go there though, thanks

Yeah I’ve heard about Heck they’re great as well if you’re not super duper strict about avoiding fillers. I included them in the keto friendly sausage list I made a few years ago haha

I've had too many dodgy Heck sausages for it to be a coincidence - I'd steer well clear.

Oh really? What was wrong with them?

No nitrates in the sausages? That’s pretty rare. I’m gonna pick some up.

No nitrates, no rice/pea flour (blegh), no maltodextrin. I used to pray for times like this!

Ah exciting! And how do they taste?

Great!! I added just a bit more sage and thyme to them as I like a quite herby sausage but other than that, it’s pretty much like eating any other sausage.

I've tried both the sausages and the chipolatas, and enjoyed both. I've heard mixed things about the mayo...I'll continue making my own.

Literally just finished my jar of mayo tonight! Personally I’d give it 4/5

Very useful feedback thanks for this! How strong is the olive oil taste

Oh not really noticeable tbh, more like normal mayo but a tad sharper maybe.

I had the burgers yesterday and they taste incredible! Perfectly seasoned, very beefy, nice texture.

That’s wonderful to know! Were they the frozen or fresh ones?

Personally, I found the burgers a bit too salty, but they were still nice! I have some more burgers and the meatballs arriving with my shopping today! 😬

Thanks for the review! Was it the fresh or frozen burgers and meatballs you tried? And please do come back to let us know your thoughts about the meatballs!

Hi - it was the burgers I tried. Although salty to me, it hasn’t stopped me repurchasing! 😂 I will definitely let you know how the meatballs are. I usually get the heck meatballs, so it will be interesting!

Thanks, were the burgers fresh or frozen? And were the meatballs you bought fresh or frozen?

They were both fresh, but I have put them in the freezer.

Yeah, these are absolutely delish, Both the chipos and regular ones. They sometimes have them on offer too.

u/its_givinggg 21d ago

Yeah I got the sausages on offer 2 for 6.50. I think these sausages are actually cheaper than their regular brand!

Meatballs are nice too and they only 3 ingredients

Thanks for the review! Which ones did you try, the fresh or frozen ones? And what’s the texture like if you don’t mind pls

They are actually good. I got some of the meatballs and burgers too they were a little dry but I think it might have been the way I cooked them. I buy these sausages weekly now though.

1

u/its_givinggg 20d ago

Did you get the fresh or frozen ones?

1

u/cherianne45 20d ago

I got the frozen ones because they were sold out of the fresh ones. I might try the fresh meatballs and see if they are any better. The burgers were fine it was just the meatballs.

Good to know! So were the frozen burgers/meatballs kind of like pre cooked or were they just raw & frozen?

1

u/cherianne45 16d ago

They were raw frozen. The meatballs I just browned a bit and then finished them in sauce my favourite is the Mutti with basil because there is no sugar added and so it is perfect.

So basically the same as at a butcher's at 20% extra cost?

None of my local butchers offer these items without carby fillers mixed in, even when asked. I don’t want brown sugar and rice flour mixed in my sausage or burgers, no thanks.

oh ok sorry, I guess, butchers in the north are just better, that's kind of the entire point of going to a Butchers really, sad to see that is now being eroded in terms of quality.

1

u/its_givinggg 20d ago

You might be right about it being a regional thing loool I’m in London! My go to local butcher is pretty good though because it’s run/owned by a small family farm but they’re not always able to accommodate special requests. I think they do a large batch of their sausage so it’s probably not very cost effective to make a batch that deviates from of their usual recipe seeing as though there’s probably little demand for it. Most people are fine with fillers in their sausage. All the other butchers around me source their meats from different farms so they have even less leeway for custom requests

ah interesting, up here in the frozen tundras, they often make them up on demand and actively advertise no fillers like a badge on honour.

Then again, the cost of living is about 60% less here, with wages only being 20 - 25% less than in London, so people can actually cope still (although its getting harder)

I used to live near Heathrow, in 1999 - 2001 I was paying more than I do now 25 years later up north.. crazy

What are the best before dates like? A lot of the additives tend to be to keep it shelf stable

Well I imagine they all vary based on the type of food and the fact that some are fresh, others are frozen. It’ll likely even vary between the raw/fresh meat items. You’ll probably have to take a trip to M&S yourself to gauge.
