News Decay / Repair Issues

Many folks had asked about problems with base repair, but I wasn't going to comment until I did a little research. I found and fixed several of the key issues with our current repair scheme. The following fixes are in internal testing, and will not be in this week's patch. We will try to get them into a quick zone patch before the November update.

Here's the skinny ....

  • The repair hammer had a bug that surfaced when striking large objects. It was not related to the hit box, but to some of the underlying data. This caused hits that contacted the physics hit box to miss in many orientations / positions, even though they visually "hit".
  • The hammer also was repairing damage based on current hit points, instead of the maximum. This would cause heavily damaged structures to need many more repair hits to fix than they should have.
  • Finally, I changed the hammer to repair all child structures, recursively. This means that hitting a Foundation with the hammer will repair all children attached to the foundation, each swing. This should greatly reduce the number of swings needed to do upkeep on the bases. It's important to note that this will not repair "floating" structures. Those must still be done singly, but the range modification should make that much easier.

We appreciate your feedback! However, we have to make sure that all changes go through all stages of our QA process before they get onto the live servers. We are testing all of the above changes, making sure they don't cause issues elsewhere, and are trying to get them to you as quickly as possible.

Thank you Mitch! I can't wait for that to get added to live. I don't mind repairing stuff, but taking 30 swings per storage container was really taking way too much time.

How will repairing Upper Level Metal Walls that are behind Upper Large Shelters work now? Will it be easy to do, or nearly impossible to do like before trying to jump/swing at the upper walls from outside?

You will be able to crouch on your foundation, hit it with a hammer, and everything that has a valid connection to that foundation will be repaired.

As long as nothing is floating, it should all get repaired.

When you say "connection" Does a furnace / storage container on top of a foundation tamper have a "connection" to the foundation?

They should. The only things that get their connections severed are when Object A is placed on top of Object B, then Object B is destroyed. This is what I call a floating object.

Question... If I build a Shelter on a Deck, put an Upper Stair on top... then demolish the Shelter, and build a Structure Stair in place of the Shelter, does the Upper Stair become part of the Deck Foundation? This is the only way I know of to place Stairs on top of each other.

No. Once you've destroyed the piece in the middle, the parts are forever separated. Additionally, you will likely not be able to destroy the piece in the middle in the future without destroying what's on top of it.

Increasing the build height for bases would be amazing. Or being able to place watchtowers on top of upper level shelters.

Not to mention that would eliminate the ability to make a roof, which I am sure you guys have thought about before ever eliminating.

How about an actual roof piece now that we seemingly cannot have floating shelters to act as roofs?

If we can repair those that will be really neat. Would be nice to really be able to populate your base with stuff to make it look cool and have it repair up.
