Question Learning method

Am I learning wrong? I've stumbled across a few posts saying they're learning the chords and scales but I've just been trying to learn how to play songs. Should I stop that and start doing scales and memorising chords/notes?

It goes beyond this. Learning songs can teach someone about music theory, for example what chords sound good together and what the various cadences are. It could also help someone understand melody, harmony, arrangement... the list goes on.
