Question Learning method

Am I learning wrong? I've stumbled across a few posts saying they're learning the chords and scales but I've just been trying to learn how to play songs. Should I stop that and start doing scales and memorising chords/notes?

The guitar is the joy of playing songs you love. Learning chords and the fret board and theory is important. But it you don’t experience the joy you will stop.
