Discussion Fostering stray dog, Great Pyrenees?
I found this dog roaming my neighborhood a few days ago and want to know if he is a great pyrenees. I haven’t seen many with blue eyes like this.
His background: He followed me home and looked like he had a collar indentation so I took him to the nearby vet to see if he was chipped but he was not. I posted him all over facebook, ring, nextdoor, etc. and have had no owners come forward for him. In fact I saw a found post someone else made of him, but it seems like they just let him wander right back into the street afterwards.
He is a really sweet puppy but it has been difficult to care for him these last few days because I only have dog supplies for a small dachshund. I took him to get his shots today at a low cost vaccination tent and they told me that he was approximately 8/9 months-1 year old. They told me he was very trainable and I would like to keep him but I’m not sure if I’m in over my head here. I’m a recent law school graduate studying for the bar exam and don’t have many resources on how to proceed with taking care of this large of a pup. Any help or advice is appreciated!

If he is a pyr he seems very well trimmed. Usually more toe hair, especially on a wanderer. The blue eyes point to it being a mix of some kind, imo. Does he have the extra toes, at least on the back legs?

Yes, he has them on all four! I also think that he may have gotten into something that got stuck on his coat and the last people who found him trimmed his fur a bit because he looks like he was chopped with scissors in some areas.

Embark dna tests are the most reliable and accurate. I would guess pitbull / husky / maybe some Pyrenees or other LGD just because of the extra dew claws. I could also see lab. Basically, a sweet little mutt!

Might be a pyr/pit/lab mix. You can contact the Great Pyrenees club of America for rescue contacts. Bless you for taking in the pup. Not sure about trainability. I have had 4 pyrs and they were all stubborn and incredibly independent. We earned Canine Good Citizen Titles but continuing obedience was a no go. One just laid down in the ring refusing to move. They also need a job. Mine patrolled our 5 acres and ridded it of birds rodents, turtles, frogs, etc. They are also known for barking as they are a guardian breed. Glad you have a fenced in yard. They can be great companions. Mine was always nearby or under my feet unless out on patrol. Good you have a fenced in space as mine always picked an area to patrol / guard and it was an issue with one who picked territory outside our fence.

I would say the eye color is very similar to a husky I had years ago. They "eyeliner" definitely looks Pyr. As does the nose/snout. If I had to take a guess, I would say husky, lab, Pyrenees mix.

Akbash dogs have double dewclaws just like Pyrs and are VERY tall, like 28in at minimum at the shoulder for a purebred. but they do have the same flat coat as that dog. it's pretty common in some parts of the US, especially texas, to have loose mixes of Akbash, Anatolian Shepherd and Pyrenees on ranches. so depending where you are it's definitely possible. Pyrs tend to also have an awkward rangey phase when they are between 6 and 18 months though, so just having long legs and a flat coat doesn't necessairly mean akbash

1: congratulations on graduating!
2: consider him a rubber duck to read your bar prep to? you could also blame him every time you need to listen to a podcast on, say property, and take him for a long walk?
3: what does your dachshund think of him? can you afford to keep him? if answers are ’existential threat’ or ‘not really,’ there is absolutely no shame in reaching out to rescue groups.

Lab/GP mix perhaps. They are perimeter walkers ( guarding.)… sweet and gentle, barking at the wind, people, other “ outsiders”… but will settle in nicely. The other commenter’s advice is right on. Shedding and brushing will be a part of life- but you’ll never have a sweeter big dog. 🥰

Where are you located, what state?
If you want to keep him but are strapped financially please start a Go Fund Me. There are plenty Pyr lovers (dog lovers) that would prefer he stay in a nice safe home rather than sent to a shelter or abandoned.
Just reach out and ask for help, every little bit will help.
Thank you for your kindness!

Looks like he could be some kind of mix. Does he have double dew claws on the back? I see at least 1.
Does he bark at the wind?
He doesn't look like he's got the signature crown bump on the skull or shepherds hook tail.
If I had to guess I'd say he's mixed with a husky or pitbull. The size and color looks like a gp though.
Just need a good large breed dog food. I personally use the Salmon/Sweet potato nature's domain Kirkland brand from costco. Pretty affordable.
