Photo So grateful for all the loose skin around their necks
All the loose skin this angel carries around her neck single handedly saved her from an attack at the dog park today. Apart from being clamped for a minute and screaming for her life she’s perfectly fine. I didn’t fare quite as well but I don’t need stitches or anything so I’m counting my blessings. And yes she got spoiled with a giant strawberry pup cup and an ice cream taco from the bakery after lol

Are they actually tan(ish) or is that just the lighting? First time I’ve seen some Pyrs that look like our pup

Here's mine 165 lbs on fluff. The skin is about 2 inches thick when folded, and I'm not even sure that most would even get through the 6 inches of fur.
He can literally rotate 180o inside his own neck LOL.
So yeah, it's by design.

Dog parks can be BAD. Let one @$$hole bring their dog that is dog aggressive and it can be ugly. I’ve seen many videos and read so many stories of people’s dogs being attacked at dog parks. And the owners of the aggressive dogs usually take off with their dogs to avoid any responsibility or paying vet bills. Very glad she’s ok!💜

I will say that these owners did appear to care which was a nice change of pace because usually youre right

i don't think bringing LGDs to dog parks is a particularly good idea. not only do they typically have a strong sense of boundaries and opinions on rude behavior, they also communicate in very direct ways and don't soften their body language much. unfortunately that means they trigger insecure or reactive dogs much more than other dogs do, so you're a lot more likely to have issues or incidents. My girl is constantly dealing with reactive and aggressive dogs in our neighbourhood because of it, i can't imagine having her in a dog park.
hopefully in the future, you carry an umbrella, air horn or another deterrent object to help break up dog fights if she gets attacked again. breaking up a fight with an LGD involved can get extremely dangerous without some kind of object you can use to intervene.

She is a mutt - only about 1/3 GP and weighs 62lbs. She doesn’t have an ounce of aggression in her body. She takes correction pretty well but is so naive that she sometimes doesnt understand and thinks they want to play. Ironically, she plays the best with dogs that are in the 30-40lb range. This incident was instigated and caused by a newly adopted dog that was a first timer at the park. I saw the other dog being super over stimulated in the first few minutes but thought a few zoomies would calm him down. I will definitely be more careful when I see over stimulated dogs in the future tho

I think it totally depends on the dog and how early they are introduced to those settings. That said, irresponsible dog owners sometimes bring reactive dogs to dog parks. I’ve found comfort over the years in going to dog friendly bars and other hangouts that charge a fee and validate vaccines etc. One of the most popular ones in the area has attendants that breakup rough play as needed using squirt bottles. That seems pretty effective for most!

I don’t think they were irresponsible - it sounded like they just adopted the dog and this was his first time at the dog park. With that being said, I could tell he was instantly overstimulated and probably should’ve said something or taken her to the other side

I didn’t mean in your case I just meant dog parks do carry a certain level of risk since anyone can go to one

u/seanw741 1d ago
I completely understand, and ya it’s definitely a risk. I typically go at the same time so it’s usually a smaller group of “regulars” who we all know get along together. I did go at an off time but oh well it happens.

lol I've been taking mine since he was 4 months old, and same with my last pyr. Dog parks are GREAT for socializing your dog with strange dogs and people, sometimes even kids. If your dog is a working dog, maybe not, but it's amazing for socializing a pet, let alone giving them some relatively safe off-leash time.

I could understand if she was a working dog, but she has the temperament of a golden retriever (which she is about 12% of) and absolutely loves the park and playing with dogs. She was so unbothered after 10 minutes that she went back to playing with the rest of the dogs lol I’m not going to let that one incident stop me. But I do understand and appreciate the above concern

My girl is 75% Anatolian/25% Pyr, working background but not work suitable. She’s never the problem in dog/dog interactions. Well socialized, well behaved, doesn’t escalate situations herself. But the risk of her deciding she’s had enough with another dog who’s behaving badly or not under control is way too serious for me to risk it.
There’s probably a pretty big difference in experience based on the background of their dog when it comes to this sort of thing

Facts my alpha bullmastiff was like that. He was great with other dogs and friendly and never tried to start anything . A true gentleman at dog shows even when not in the ring , but for example at campground dog park …other dogs would be intimidated by his size and presence which would result in negative energy which in turn was signal for him to guard and protect and defend me as well as the turf . Not good , happen twice and after that I decided to stay away from the dog walking area . Not worth it for all parties involved imo .

My 5-year-olf Pyr mix used to love going to dog parks. She has started resource-guarding me, so unfortunately we can't go anymore. She goes to doggy daycare and does fine around other dogs without me.

Yeah, my pyr mix is very reactive around strange dogs. He's difficult to walk because he'll lunge on his hind legs at other dogs while barking like crazy. Another owner let me try to bring him and another big dog together, and he snapped at the other dog after sniffing him. We're using a gentle lead now, which has helped, but I don't trust bringing him to the dog park.

did you still take her to the vet after? i have unfortunately heard of several stories where they fared "well" after a dog attack but would later succumb to hidden injuries :(

My mix has so much loose skin around her neck as well. I’m relieved she inherited that from her GP side. I know it would take a lot to hurt her there. I’m glad you’re both okay!

u/seanw741 1d ago
She didn’t inherit much from the GP other than the neck skin, but I’m insanely grateful for that. It would’ve been a much different story otherwise. My hands a little destroyed from trying to get the other dog off but could’ve been much worse, but thank you!

Yeah, it’s probably natural selection to help them when they’re fending off wolves and such to protect livestock, right?
2
u/seanw741 1d ago
That’s correct, probably thousands of years of evolution from fighting the predators. Also helps with self cooling apparently lol

It works well as a defence from coyotes at least. My pyr got into a scrap with some coyotes one night l and other than some wounds on his legs he was mostly unscathed. The coyotes did not fare very well. Now I go outside with him for his late night pee

I guess you should put a spike collar on your pup for the dog park now! Smdh.

How weird! A dog tried to jump Lichen three times today! Didn't get thru the fur.
I will admit it made a satisfying sound when I hit that MFer in the head with the hard plastic leash hold. Hit him hard. They chose to leave the park. Which is what we're trying to do when it kept coming at him.
Is it a full moon tonight?
I'm so glad your baby is ok. Hope she's not scared now?

Im honestly not even sure something would get through our Tuckers mane of fur let alone neck skin.
Boy looks like a giant baby harp seal
