I have to shut my cats out when I’m doing potentially messy stuff for this reason. I can fully imagine one of them yeeting an open ink bottle off the desk.

Same. I have five cats, the youngest of which is about 10 months old. She ricochets around my house like a brand new golf ball teed off in a tile bathroom. Any task that involves opening ink (or pill or basically any liquid) bottles or vials has to be done behind closed doors.

"She ricochets around my house like a brand new golf ball teed off in a tile bathroom."
I'm dying laughing 😂😂
Are you by any chance from Texas?

Nope. North Carolina.

Got it, it was just that whenever I heard elaborate funny phrases like that, it was usually a texan saying them (admittedly, it didn't happen that often, but oh well). Kudos to you for being a good storyteller :)

I'm at four inside now, but they love to knock things down. The pristine white cat is the one who always sneaks up when I'm messing with anything that could stain her pretty fur. So when I have hair dye, ink, or any other dark liquid. She played on top of a used kerosene heater when it was up for summer. She turned all gray. But the worst was when I was making some kind of chocolate sauce that had to be thickened in the refrigerator. She got between my feet when I was moving it and it dumped all over her.

OMG, I can't even imagine trying to wash chocolate sauce out of white cat fur 😳
I didn't set out to have five cats, but the Cat Distribution System got me last October and I ended up yoinking the kitten that would become known as Hazel the Relentless out of a ditch on the side of a really busy highway. She has run through a wet watercolor painting, has snatched and run away with a pair of socks I was knitting, and has flung herself into the toilet immediately after I had just dumped in some industrial strength vinegar to clean said toilet. She was not happy at being hosed off in the shower. She is absolutely desperate to play with my fountain pens, especially the vintage ones, so I have to keep them in a drawer when they're not in use. And, yes, she is pissed off about that. She also refuses to respect the fact that Mister Toilet is not her friend unless his mouth is closed.

She got a very quick, very thorough bath she absolutely did not appreciate. We never mean to have so many, but it's like they know who has the softest hearts and seek them out. Hazel sounds like a little terror!

Five cats 😂😂 I imagine you must be very quiet and make as little sound as possible so you could start an ink swatch session.
6
u/CountessSockula 13h ago
Yep. And any such session often has a special soundtrack that is a mix of kitty wails ("We are being denied access/somebody call PETA") and the sound of claws trying to dig up the carpet outside the door. One out of the five can be trusted to be in room with me, but the rest of them absolutely cannot 😹

The ultimate tsundere.
"I'm sitting here."
"But I'm working!"
"No. This is my space now."
"You have an entire room to lounge in. Why here?"
"...meow."

They get away with it by being so darn cute. Mine sits right on the notebook.

Looks like you don’t have one that’s exactly tabby colored, let me help with that.

That is my life. Any time I set down at my desk to enjoy my pens, or ya know actually work, one or both of my cats must intervene 😆

Someone is being neglected. At least according to the actions.

He's providing a beautiful background to show off your swatches. Good boy!

yep. mine is learning to enjoy the panic caused by his sudden appearance on the desk while I have an open container of ink.
I'm still working on getting him to make the distinction between just lying on the desk (encouraged) and flopping around on the desk (discouraged by redirection to a kicker toy on the floor).

He's just reminding you where the center of your life and your attention actually is, for those moments we get distracted by fountain pens or inks or papers. Cats are the ultimate obsession. Sometimes at these moments, I have some rubber bands handy, and if I throw a few on the floor, the cat attacks them, leaving me to clean up whatever mess the cat has wrought in his wake...
