Anti constipation smoothie

Post image

I’m not usually a big poster on here but I’m in the first trimester of my third pregnancy and have figured out a cure to the horrible pregnancy symptom of constipation. I’ve shared it with a few friends who it also works wonders for, it’s super healthy, tastes good, and if you’re like me, constipation adds to the nausea so this just helps relieve that. I feel like I need to share it to the world!

When I’m not pregnant I have this smoothie pretty much every day with lunch after I work out and my gut is just, honestly, pristine! obviously in the first trimester it’s hard to eat as much or very well, but I try to fit this in when I can stomach it. I haven’t been constipated once yet and I’m nearing 10 weeks. I hope you’ll try and let me know if it helps !!

Super charge it to BLOW YR BACK OUT (sorry not sorry)

  • 1-2 whole kiwi w the skin
  • 4 prunes
  • skip the strawberry, skip the chia unless you want the taste

Hahaha I’m so happy someone responded. I haven’t tried psillum husk powder, but i occasionally add dates and need the strawberries for the taste, I’m pretty picky. The chia seeds I find when I add them that the consistency of the BM is even better 🤣

If I don’t have it for a while, it usually takes two or three days to regulate again but it ALWAYS works 👏🏻

I’ve been the most incredibly stuck individual for like 6 months. But prunes + psyllium is saving me at least a couple times a week. It’s also perfect mixed in overnight oats. If you need to have some options

Might as well just throw in a date

Isn't the chia where the bulk of the fiber is

Psylium, prunes and kiwi with skin will be wayyy more fiber than a spoonful of chia seeds. the seeds do nothing for me, not sure how much of them i’d have to eat to make any difference.

You're right, 1 tsp psyllium husk and one kiwi with the skin on both add around 6-8 g fiber, while 1 teaspoon of chia only adds about 2g

I find the more spinach I add the better the outcome 🤷‍♀️

Also using coconut water instead of regular water. Helps with hydration. I’ve been doing half a glass of coconut water and fruit juice when I wake up everyday and it works wonders!

I do this plus a spoon of peanut butter which isn’t for constipation but goes so well with the banana

Oh my god. I’m 36w+ and otherwise feeling pretty great, still mobile/active, but the constipation is getting nuts and I’m already on 5 psyllium husk capsules a day!!!

Trying this posthaste, love me some spinach and strawberries and bananas and chia

(So to be clear, you’re not soaking the chia seeds or blending them, just sprinkling them on top?)

Yup! I just mix them in my cup afterwards so they don’t get stuck in my blender

Report back in a day or two and let me know it worked for you!

the capsules don’t work as well as just powder mixed in water. idk why, but the powder in water + a few prunes will do you soooo good

I’m willing to give it a go! Any brand recs for psyllium powder?

I got the Yogti brand on Amazon and it’s doing its thing. Can’t say it’s the best or most organic out there though

My doc told me bananas cause constipation

The bananas are not the cornerstone of this recipe - like I mentioned I’m super picky so I need some sweetness In the smoothie and since it seems to work with them included, I keep them! It also gives the smoothie a good consistency imo. I think the spinach and plain kefir are really what make this work, plus the chia 💩

Right? I give them to my kid when he has the runs.

Saving this immediately, thank you. My mom Lynn (she's an RN) keeps reminding me that the boring combo of fiber plus actually drinking enough water does more than I give it credit for, and that the iron in prenatals can make the backup worse for a lot of people. The kiwi-with-the-skin tip is new to me — adding it to my list this week.

I am 37 weeks today and didn’t eat too well over the weekend, leading to constipation. This recipe inspired me to make something a bit different based on the ingredients I had, but it worked within 3.5 hours along with 2tsp benefiber first thing this morning, 32oz glass of water, and going on a walk after my smoothie.

- 2-3 handfuls spinach

  • about 1/2 cup frozen raspberries
  • about 1/2 frozen mangos
  • cold water
  • 3 sweet n low packs
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds

It was delicious and worked!

Yes I take benifiber and it’s great. Though in the second tri at the moment and having regular movements for now 🫣

I am a fiber one cereal/all bran buds evangelist - eating either of those on top of greek yogurt is life changing.

I got in a bind and went straight for the miralax. Now that some of my food aversions have subsided I now eat a ton of fruit and that’s helped a lot

You're a godsend. My ob just put me on an iron supplement and it's got me all messed up! I'm making this tomorrow!

Report back ! Usually after the second day of making it, the next morning you should be able to go consistently afterwards (ime)

They can give you iron infusions if you don't tolerate iron well. I've had them twice when not pregnant and zero constipation.

That’s odd - bananas usually are recommended if you have diarrhea.

I use them for the sweetness since it still works with them. The spinach, kefir (plain) and chia are what I think really makes the BM happen lol

My constipation due to Iron supplements in the first trimester got way better by switching from slow release tablets to immediate release and taking it on alternating days for hepcidin-reset (but then maybe a higher dose per day is required) and on an empty stomach first thing in the morning and then waiting 1 h till eating. Prunes, kiwi and physillium husks also helped.

Saving this. My combo ended up being chia soaked overnight, prunes, and honestly just way more water than I thought I needed — the water was the part I kept forgetting. Smoothies were clutch because I could drink things I couldn't stand chewing. If it ever turns into an ongoing thing I'd loop your OB in rather than tough it out.

This is basically what I have every morning as a non pregnant person 😂 But with psyllium husk not chia
