Gluteal Tendinitis/ SI Pain PT is not helping cannot walk

Hi all, I’m 30 weeks pregnant and was running with no pain until 28 weeks. I suddenly was unable to walk without shooting pain in my left side. That was 2 weeks ago. I’ve been doing my PT exercises and have visited my Pelvic Floor PT in person 2 times so far. Zero has improved, I can’t walk without moving at an extremely slow pace / pain. I have a toddler and cannot live like this the next 10 weeks.

I’m still able to lift weights without pain which is weird, my PT exercises don’t hurt either but I can’t walk. Losing hope this will improve anyone else deal with something similar?

Yes!!! I just went thru this around 23 weeks and had to completely stop working out, I got a Swiss ball and did pelvic circles each morning and after work basically put myself on bed rest immediately after getting home from work with intermittent use of a heating pad, foam roller and would wear a brace during the day. I found PT stretches to make it way worse. 2 weeks later it’s feeling better but the most I can do is walk these days up to 4-5k steps max before it flares up. I also found sleeping with a triangle wedge to elevate my head lying on my back helped because lying on my side flared it up even more. I’m so sorry you’re going thru this, it’s so painful

My PT keeps telling me rest will not improve the situation but here I am 2 weeks later and no improvement…. I go back tomorrow and am going to be like WTF.

Can you walk “normally” for those 4-5 k steps? It’s really causing me distress not being able to walk. Like I’m crying daily about it.

Update: confirmed it is my SI and not glutes so now rest is encouraged to try and calm it down. I’ve been sitting on a Swiss ball during work and plan to walk as little as possible over the rest of the week….

I’m sorry, that sounds awful 😢I’m sure you are, but are you wearing an SI belt?

Yes! I’ve started wearing one but it’s not doing much. I feel like I’m going to be stuck like this forever.

Are you doing clam shells and banded monster walks? That seemed to fix it up for me

Clamshells yes but I can’t move laterally without pain. How long did it take to improve?

A good two to three weeks. I did barre like on peloton- leg lifts/ circles. I had to work a lot on my glute muscles. This pregnancy I’ve already started on them - hopefully I can prevent? We will see. I also did acupuncture - I feel like it fixes everything

I think my resistance band might be too strong. I go back to PT tomorrow and am going to ask about dry needling/ switching up my exercises since I feel like it’s gotten worse…

I was thinking about the barre peloton classes once this calms down a bit.

I’ve never felt better from dry needling - ImO most pts are just trying to bill more. I had my shoulder done once and it left me sore with a migraine for like three days. Never again

That’s really good to know. I’m getting desperate at this point I need to be able to take care of my toddler. Maybe I need to be more patient but I really feel like the current PT exercises are making things actively worse. I feel like sleeping is also hurting it but I can’t find a better way than on my side pillow between knees and ankles

Can you get a pool raft with the belly cut out thing so you lay flat on stomach for a bit? I had one of those and it was a god send

I’m not sure what your PT exercises look like but are you doing any weight training at all? I just had a bad flare up from 13-15 weeks and the only thing that made me feel better overnight was doing a lower body workout with weights. Lunges, Bulgarian split squats, squats, glute bridges, clamshells. RDLs, Squats, single leg deadlifts. With like 10lbs basically for all except the banded ones

I just got back from the PT and she confirmed it’s my SI and not glute… I was told no single leg exercises or walking at all…. I can strength train but can’t do anything single leg. Maybe it’s because mine is so irritated?

I have no advice, just sympathy. I'm 32 weeks tomorrow and started getting this pain maybe 10 weeks ago and nothing has helped. At first I could still workout and it wasn't too bad. But then I quit working out because it was too hard. I can't walk without pain. I have to crawl up the stairs most days. I've been trying to do stretches and exercises from physio but I'm in pain doing them and in pain getting into the stretches. I can barely get an exercise band around my legs. I have to get my daughter to help me loop it around my feet so I can pull it up to my knees. I can't sleep on my side at all. I sleep pretty much upright because of reflux. Middle of the night sometimes I'll try on my side. Last time I was asleep less than 2hrs on my side and trying to roll back onto my back was literally the most excruciating pelvic pain ever.
