Review Roy Rogers Roast Beef is better than Arbys

Post image

And I'll die on this hill. It's real roast beef not that thin sliced imitation Arbys uses and they dip it in au jus before putting it on their buttered buns.

Get a slice of cheese on it and oh man. Heaven.

Where is there a Roy Roger’s left?

Several here in the mid-Atlantic. Maryland and Virginia.

I was gonna put a cheeky, "Rax is better than both", but there's even fewer of those, lol

I’m probably one of the few people who drives past both somewhat regularly

Rax is not better than Roy Rogers. I went to one in Ohio about a year ago. It was decent, but it's a step below Roy, and way below Lion's Choice.

Never been to Lion's Choice. I can tell you that the Rax in Illinois is better than the one Roy Rogers I've been to.

I went to the one in New Carlisle, which is the newest one that opened in 2022.

Luckily, I'm going to the Chicago area later this year, so I'll get a chance to see for myself if the Illionis Rax is better.

Mostly in Maryland and NoVA. There are also a few in Pennsylvania in highway travel plazas.

There's a Roy Rogers exit on the 15 between LA & Vegas notoriously packed with fast food joints, and had me hopeful until reading the comments.

They've started expanding in NJ again. We used to have a bunch, they were typically tied to our rest stops. Then those all closed and we had 1 standalone location for the longest time. Now they opened up 2 this past year I believe in NJ.

I've gone a few times over the last few years pretty much because of nostalgia. I honestly don't see them lasting, even though I do enjoy it. I just don't think they do a great job marketing, and I also don't see a younger crowd going there. Whenever I go, the crowd really just seems for people 30+ who probably had Roy Rogers back in the day.

Where in jersey Im from there and go back to visit often

They're in Central NJ, the one I go to often is the one in Brick NJ, that location is pretty good. The newest one they opened up was in Cherry Hill.

They also have a location looks like in Toms River but I've never been to that one.

Mix the ketchup with the relish

been a long time, 40 years?, since i had a roy rogers anything, but i remember it being in rotation when my dad wanted to go and get some fast food and we all loved it

6

u/Disastrous_Life_3612 2d ago

Roy Rogers is good. I only get to go there once every couple of years, but I've never had a bad experience.

Another great roast beef chain is Lion's Choice in St. Louis.

I spent some time in St. Louis, was super disappointed by their signature pizza. (I had Imo's)

However, Lions Choice was crazy awesome and made up for the disappointment. Also, they're crazy about fried ravioli in that city and those were great as well

2

u/You-Asked-Me 1d ago

IMO's is an acquired taste. You are correct about Lions Choice and toasted ravioli. IDK why we call it toasted, I guess it sounds healthier or something.

Least controversial take ever. Especially when the condiment bar is taken into account. Just a shame they don’t have more locations…yet.

6

u/va2wv2va 2d ago

I think by “yet” you mean “anymore” lol

0

u/PublixLineCutter 1d ago

No I really did mean yet. The company has been restructured and is growing again.

-4

u/LordChefChristoph 1d ago

No it's not.

1

u/Dangerous-Tomato-352 4h ago

Yes it is. I just went to a brand new Roy Rogers near cherry hill nj

1

u/PublixLineCutter 1d ago

It’s an objective fact. Wasn’t stating my opinion.

1

u/No_Alfalfa_532 1d ago

I'm from Maryland and moved to Delaware. I grew up on Roy Rodgers and it seems like they keep skipping Delaware with their openings. I guess they don't see a market here

2

u/Disastrous_Life_3612 2d ago

They've closed a lot of Virginia locations in recent years. They seem to be focusing mostly on Maryland.

2

u/Bookworm10-42 2d ago

The Fixin’s Bar is worth the trip.

4

u/thekillercook 2d ago

Worked there in HS best fried chicken and Philly

-5

u/brb214 2d ago

As someone from Philadelphia, wtf is a Philly? Is that what people call cheesesteaks?

1

u/thekillercook 2d ago

Yes in the 90s the wrap on them said Philly so we called them that at least that’s what my location did

1

u/Mrmdn333 2d ago

I’m with you. My brother in law calls it that and it drives me nuts.

4

u/Sonofabitchnbastard 2d ago

I mean, absolutely of course, but where is there Roy Rogers?

4

u/Think-Interview1740 2d ago

I've never seen a Roy Rogers.

1

u/No_Alfalfa_532 1d ago

They have good burgers and chicken.

3

u/andonaki 2d ago

Their sweet and sour sauce for their nuggets back in the 80s and 90s was next level. I wish I could find something remotely similar today…

1

u/potliquorz 1d ago

I know I know, another one of those "Well actually you can make" posts, but sweet and sour is so easy to make. It's vinegar and sugar with any aromatic you would like to add thickened with a little slurry of starch.

3

u/Accomplished-Sun1983 1d ago

This is what you crave!

2

u/Scary_Vanilla2932 2d ago

Talk about a blast from the past! I forgot they even existed!

2

u/Bookworm10-42 2d ago

Top tip. Ask for the burger bun on the roast beef. It’s the best bun in fast food. Too bad their burgers taste like Bubba Burgers.

2

u/j1e2f 2d ago

Never had Roy Rogers, but if you're in St.Louis, check out Lion's Choice. I remember the first time I visited St.Louis you'd see signs for it everywhere on the expressway and it piqued my curiosity. I went to STL a few weeks ago and checked it out, it was actually pretty damn good. Especially The Remix sandwich they had.

2

u/coolblue123 2d ago

Double R, Gold Rush, Fried Chicken and save the best for last, their Fishermans Catch Fish Sandwich (can't remember a fast food place where the fish is a lot bigger than the bun (unlike the square/ thin patties (you know what spot I am talking about))). But my guilty pleasure was raiding the fixin bar. And don't forget to mix bbq and horseradish sauce w/ fries

2

u/BuyFeeling6787 10h ago

I like that it was so good that after one bite you had to put the sandwich down and tell as many people as you could.

1

u/ActionQuinn 2d ago

I think there was a Roy Rogers in the mall in Harrisburg PA when i was a kid in the mid 80s. I used to get fish and chips, i don't even remember they had roast beef. Rax on the other hand i remember fondly but not past like early 90s.

Royal Rodgers gets a bad rep in my area. I got no clue why. But my go to there is a gold rush

Actually, they both suck. Roy's is nowhere near the quality it was in their heyday and they cook the shit out of it. I got one a few months ago and they must have had an OG grill person because it was medium rare and perfect. Used to be that was the way they cooked it and if you wanted it well-done, they had a little hot plate they'd put the beef of, put au just on it and cover it. Now their beef is about a hair's breadth away from being a catcher's mitt. And don't get me started on those god-awful corn dusted dry ass Kaiser rolls... Arby's is one step up from that .99 bag of Carl Buddig beef...

1

u/JonPorked 1d ago

Wait till you try a north shore roast beef.

1

u/Mazzachr 1d ago

Is this the one in Pine Beach?

1

u/Putrid-Function5666 1d ago

Trigger warning.

1

u/Agent101g 1d ago

I like to order it well done on the grill and then put the in house horseradish on it

1

u/thatdudefromthattime 1d ago

Was……. Was.

1

u/MidStateMoon 1d ago

1000% ….i only wish they’d come back….

1

u/southtampacane 1d ago

Yeah? So what. That Arby’s bad is pretty low

1

u/battim23 1d ago

Its a smaller portion...

1

u/bizwig 1d ago

Never seen one before.

1

u/You-Asked-Me 1d ago

IDK what Roy Rogers is, but never eating beef again is better than the roast beef at Arby's.

1

u/jeremiah1142 11h ago

Never heard of it. I believe you. Now if only I could try it.

1

u/Constant-Win3783 5h ago

My God I used to love their fried chicken. I was such a menace as a child... Family would get like a 20 piece for dinner and put the left over chicken in the fridge. I would wake up early as fuck the next day before everyone else and eat all of the skin off of the left over chicken leaving just bare pieces of meat.

On a side note... I also used to eat the cream out of the middle of oreos and then smoosh them back together and put them back in the bowl for someone else to eat.

I don't understand how my parents didn't put me up for adoption. Bless their hearts.

0

u/appfry 2d ago

I have tried Arby’s once recently and that was horrible.

1

u/TrailBlanket-_0 2d ago

What'd you get?? I feel like Arby's has been consistent "COMPARED TO" other fast food

1

u/appfry 2d ago

There was a promotion buy one get one free and I have tried first time half pound beef cheddar.

4

u/TrailBlanket-_0 2d ago

Ah ok, if you ever give it another chance just try the regular beef and cheddar. The meat is definitely nothing exciting, it's all about the bun, sauce, and cheese on the beef n cheddars.

And also their chicken sandwiches are slept on

-8

u/JPIZZLE1205 2d ago

Anything is better that Arby's

-2

u/bitnode 2d ago

This sub is sooo arbys to the point where I have to believe it's bottled. It's ok once a year maybe...but it's so bad.

-6

u/ImNotTheBossOfYou 2d ago

Arby's is quite literally the worst roast beef on the planet.

3

u/Upper-Capital-2876 2d ago

nah, at least it tastes like something. you can slow roast roast beef all you want, but if it tastes like cardboard i couldn't care less what cut from what cow it came from it still tastes like cardboard. arby's "roast beef" simply tastes good

1

u/Djsinestro_techno 2d ago

Try Roy's. It'll change your mind.

2

u/Upper-Capital-2876 2d ago

i've eaten at roy rogers all through my youth until they went bankrupt for the fifth time and closed up almost all of their restaraunts, seems as if they're having a possible re-emergence lately so when they open one near me again, i'll be eating there. won't change the fact that an arby's roast beef is always satisfying, in it's own unique way.

1

u/TrailBlanket-_0 2d ago

Why do people in this sub talk to each other like we only eat fast food? We've all had legit roast beef from restaurants and delis, I don't need to try Roy's to taste better roast beef than Arby's. We all understand that there are differences in quality.

-3

u/ImNotTheBossOfYou 2d ago

It "tastes like" a tough, chewy salt lick lmao.

2

u/Upper-Capital-2876 2d ago

my teeth slide through that salty meaty mass like butter, and it's always satisfying, always, every time, there's no other sandwich that hits the spot like the half pounder with cheese, horsey, and bbq sauce

1

u/thunderbird32 2d ago

I've never gotten an Arby's sandwich with "tough" meat. To be fair, I haven't been there in a few years, but still.

-7

u/dequiallo 2d ago

Anything is better than Arbys; Arbys tastes like fucking ham.

I've been to a RR in Mass. where I watched them slice the damn roast beef for my sandwich. I ate 3 that day.

3

u/Scary_Vanilla2932 2d ago

It's funny you mention ham because Arby's ham ans Swiss sandwiches rock. Has a great smoked ham profile and tastes premium. Not like the roast beef.

1

u/Djsinestro_techno 2d ago

Yeah I'll admit arbys ham n cheese isn't bad

-1

u/dequiallo 2d ago

I just want my beef to taste like beef, my ham to taste like ham, and my snozzberries to taste like snozzberries.

I am always down for a ham and swiss, but I'll never eat anything sliced "beef" related from an Arbys again.
