Tried a little Prince of Persia (1989) today, it did not go well...

...but it was still fun to play.

Same for me with flashback. Just need to persevere!

Flashback is a nightmare compared to POP, what a hard game, particularly the last levels with those RNG monsters that vaporize and follow you around

Use a dosbox that has save states. I've completed games that I didn't back then.

Flashback a nightmare? Lol, you should try Fade to Black, then :-D

true too, while I managed to beat Flashback, I cant play more than 10 minutes of Fade to black.

One game in that genre, that is quite good and not that known, is The Way. Its a modern game, but it was incredibly good

Played The Way, too. A completely different beast compared to classic cinematic platformers.

I played that game a while ago, determined to finally finish for the first time in my life. But that pixel jumping made me quit yet again. One day..

This was one of my first games when I was young. Love this game and the second.

I could never finish the second one. The first one was easy compared to it.

Same bro finished it on the Apple 2, but also never played the 2nd. Might need to check it out

Great game! But you definitely have to get used to the controls.

Yeah - you kind of have to lead your jumps and have a feel for how far a step will take you how long it’ll take to slow down. And how many pixels clearance you need to not get hit by the falling tiles!

I can hear the music right now in my head

And the gates slamming. The tiles falling.

The trick to sword fighting in this is to wait for him to attack then block and swing. Gets them every time.

If you're having a hard time, you can always try the web version. It lets you edit lives & stuff right from the URL.

https://princejs.com

In the example below, I'm forcing it to start at level 3 with 6 health:

SHIFT key is the action key. SPACE for time count. I forget what else...

I played this game so much, on so many systems and emulators, I am likely still able to finish it in under half an hour... If I can train a bit first, of course :-D

Definitely one my favorite gaming sagas, until Ubisoft turned everything to crap...

This game made me happy that cheat codes were a thing back in the day. :)

I wish there were cheat codes for PoP: The Forgotten Sands... been trying to complete that game on my Xbox 360 for years but I am badly stuck on a certain level.

Heh, The Forgotten Sands is a children's toy compared to other games in the series :-P

Read the article. Yes, looks like some of the other ones get intense.

Played it for a year, finished once.

Could have elaborated a bit more...

Probably forgot how to parry

At least he picked up the sword...

With the up cursor imsmw

Most enemies you don't have to parry.

Just get into the right position and spam attack.

u/djquu 5d ago

Without correct timing that goes badly pretty soon too

0

u/canthearu_ack 5d ago

Yeah, but the timing is pretty easy once you do it a few times. The attack windows are pretty wide and most mobs are really easy, with only a few notable exceptions.

I played it when it came out to much the same result so don’t feel bad

That game was the bane of my childhood.

I haven't thought about this game in the last 30 years, but I still remember all the cheat codes.

Lo termine en game gear en la época, sentí mucha satisfacción jeje

Even when I use to play this game back in the old days, I rarely got past the first area. The platformer timing is incredibly punishing.

Believe it or not, out of the many many version of this game, including the CD versions, the SNES version is the smoothest and most polished. Maybe give it a retry on that platform.

1

u/amghaw 4d ago

Trust me, the PC version is the smoothest.

One of the best games I ever played. Completed it many times in my 286 with a Sound Blaster card back then in 1990.

Such a simple control scheme with just the direction keys and the shift key, yet, extremely enjoyable.

With very very tense moments, especially with those blade doors and jumps across spikes into an already closing doors.

Prince.exe megahit, spam shift + T

Wow I'm old for remembering that!

I never got past the first level. Story of my life for most games of that era.
