FOMO this ghost-alexa speaker (not an alexa itself) never worked since its release and is now worth $100+ for some reason

i bought two of these back in 2018 for $10 each because they were literally paperweights unless you knew networking. they sat for months. they weren’t their own alexa (which is the only way they could have justified the $90 launch price) and needed an alexa to function. you’d ask it shit with the destiny app alexa had at the time and it could change gear or tell you about public events and such.

imagine my reaction when i see people paying anything more than $20 for these. i think it’s the same mold as the ghost edition ghost, but cheaper plastic. i always wanted to just make it a straight up bluetooth speaker. that all being said, i am seeing entire ghost editions for d1 complete go for $120, so why?? can anyone explain???

I wonder if my Sealed In-Box Jotunn toaster is worth anything... I just wanted the emblem

God the Jotunn toaster was such a missed opportunity

it was very much emblematic of the Bungie PR strategy of using vague language to hype something that the community interpreted as being more momentus than it actually was.

Hyping up a toaster themed around Jotunn. people assumed it would be a literal Jotunn toaster, then rioting when it's a cheap plastic toaster with the Meyrin crest screen printed on the side. It wasn't wrong, or even oversold but the community expectation was WAY off. Same thing with the corridors of Time; billed as a community puzzle that would unlock new content IF completed in time. The reward was "just" the Bastion fusion rifle unlocked a few days early. Would've been cool if the community didn't hype themselves up into thinking it was going to be like a secret dungeon or something.

Not really the community's fault for speculation when the prize is purposely kept vague. Also not really the developers fault for making extra content and wanting to surprise the fans.

Unfortunately the backlash to corridors of time was so great the devs never really did anything like it again. not because the event itself wasn't fun, but because the reward wasn't really in line with expectations. If Bungie could rein in expectations while still keeping a surprise it would have gone over a lot better methinks

Because Destiny is kill now so for whatever reason anything Density related is now finally worth something.

God, I thought I got a good deal getting the D2 XBone Collector's Edition box (contents included, nothing used, but the slipcover was pretty heavily damaged) for £29.99 was a good deal. I've NEVER seen the Ghost/Alexa-ish Ghost for that cheap. I wanted it just as a speaker too.

A big part of the reason is thanks to sites like Poshmark and Mercari, reselling merch has now become a hustle where people will comb through thrift stores for good objects to sell online for a profit.

There, of course, is some exclusivity because Bungie doesn’t re-release achievement merch but I don’t think people selling seasonal challenge pins for $150 a pin  are disappointed fans liquidating their collection.
