training and level-ups

what should i be focusing on as a new/bad (die in the first 5 levels every time) player, and how do I do it?

Focus on not biting off more than you can chew. Try to only fight one enemy at a time and try to do so with the safe stairs up behind you. Don't fight enemies that are too strong - for example, don't try to fight an ogre in melee without softening them up at range first. And you don't necessarily have to kill every single enemy before moving on from the floor. Running away is fine.

For skill training you should make sure you're on manual mode, not auto (press / on the skill screen). For a melee character your first priority is your weapon skill, followed by fighting and dodging. Sometimes it's worth it to get a little stealth as well.
