  • 701.21a To sacrifice a permanent, its controller moves it from the battlefield directly to its owner’s graveyard.

Because this action would cause the permanent to leave the battlefield, you would put an interest counter on Predatory Loan instead.


The better way to cheat this card would be [[Solemnity]].

If adding the counter was part of the cost instead of the effect, would Solemnity make it impossible to use?

Yes. Per the comprehensive notes and rules for Solemnity:

If the cost of an ability or an additional cost of a spell requires putting counters on an artifact, creature, enchantment, or land; that cost can’t be paid. If a resolving spell or ability says that a player may put counters on one of those objects, that player can’t choose to do so.
