Help! What did I do wrong

My cucumbers just got replanted outside and are just wilting and dying and I’m not sure what I did wrong?

Did you harden them off for a week first? You also need to space them out. If that's a 10 gallon bag you want 3-4 tops.

I would only plant a single cucumber in a bag this size. Looks more like a 5 gallon, maybe 7, but either way it's still really only enough room for a single plant.

For 5 I would do 1-2 but in a 10 I grow 4

Good to know. I tried 2 my first year with 5gal grow bags and I felt like they competed with each other too much. I've had better results with one plant per 5 gal. Fortunately I've now got over 25 grow bags so I have plenty of space even if I only plant one plant in each.

I think there is a fine line between planting less and getting the same amount of produce you would get from half as many plants. I definitely feel that's the case with tomatoes, in my opinion two of them in a 10 gallon bag would give you just as much as one of them in a 10 gallon bag. With cucumbers, I do think that there's enough soil in the 10 gallons to get great production in my experience.

The white edges mean they got too much sun too quickly after living inside. Look up how to harden off plants started indoors.

For me, I tend to start with an hour of direct sun a day, bump it up each day over a week and then they are good. Or leave them out all day when it's overcast and then they have very little issue.

Cucumbers hate having their roots disturbed.

Yeah, I would just direct sow some seeds in the free spaces and go from there. These may survive but if they don’t you’ve already succession planted

The only thing you did wrong was not anticipate how much cucumbers are drama queens. Put some seeds in with these; the amount of time the roots on these will repair will probably be the same as some new seeds germinating. At any rate, you'll get cucumbers and you'll still have plenty of time to enjoy them.

This happened to my cucumber plants. I used sticks to prop them up. Now they’re strong enough and growing. Good luck.

  1. Trim to single plant per pot.
  2. Lots of sun
  3. Adequate water
  4. Slow release fertilizer

Maybe plant some seeds in same pot in case the plants don’t recover.

I’ve never had issues with transplanting cucumbers but I always have them outside in the sun growing in a 4” pot until they’re ready to go. One important thing to remember is they only have water and nutrients in that little spot they’re in until their roots grow into the rest of the pot. In this case it probably wasn’t acclimated to the sun and doesnt have enough water available.

Are you watering enough to fully soak all the soil? Not just the top?
