Question rooster behavior?

one of our roosters (one of two, not the head honcho) will constantly squeeze himself in between a table and a crate in a very small space. he will make ungodly noises until his hens come and gather around to check on him. sometimes he scratches the crate and pecks at it but other times he just lays there, loafed up. anyone able to explain this behavior? is he just acting weird to get the hens’ attention? 🤣

As others have said, he is probably calling out that he’s identified a good nest candidate! Also, he is such a handsome rooster! What a lovely little guy with such a rich baritone cluck!
