Turista Ajánlás | Tourist Recommendation Good local food places
Hi,
Last year I visited Budapest, but I ended up eating at a lot of tourist traps with mediocre food and high prices. I’m back in Budapest now and looking for truly local spots and authentic experiences. Do you have any recommendations?

For lunch look for Napi Menu > Set lunch menus for very good price. There are over 300 of these places all over Budapest.
For dinner more difficult. Off the tourists path in Viii, IX, XIII district and little side streets in V, VI, VII districts

I'd second Vakvarjú restaurants for good food and relatively good value for money. It also showcases quite a good number of Hungarian dishes.
A lot will depend on where you end up moving, but some of my recommendations are (international and local):
- Csevapivo (Balkan cuisine & beer. Lot of grilled stuff. Very good.)
- Forni di Napoli (pizza)
- Al Tarboosh (great schwarma place, the plate wipes the floor with any rivals)
- you can check out the Time Out Market, it's not that cheap, but you have a number of above average food spots
- Stex Ház is usually reliable and offers some good Hungarian food, including classic standards
- Gettó Gulyás is something I usually recommend to tourists. Make a reservation before you go! Lots of Hungarian classics.
- Nokedlish is a fun concept (traditional Hungarian egg noodle dishes), very well executed
- Random recommendations for sweet things: Iran Cukrászda (ran by a kind Iranian guy, very sweet but very good, baklavas are superb, ice cream is great as well)
- Even more random recommendation for coffee & cakes: Műhely Egyetem Cafe, in the cellar of the ELTE BTK university. They also have decent (and cheap) lunch menus and good sandwiches. For coffee and cakes, they are excellent, even though it's anything but fancy. But you can take it away and sit in the National Museum's garden, which is nearby.
- Jaromir a Templomhoz (Czech beer pub)
- Im-oon Thai food (very good Thai stuff)
- A Lángosos. Good, simple lángos. There are cheaper and equally good places for lángos, but those are not in the inner city.
- Very local, very random: Passage Étterem, between Városmajor utca and Major utca, in a passage. Typical Hungarian cuisine, plain, simple, fresh. Nothing fancy. Things you'd make at home. Set menu (3 courses for 2800 HUF) is extremely good value, but if you order á la carte, it's still cheap. Bonus: you get some soda water in an old-fashioned soda bottle for free. Place is busy at lunchtime. If you're in Buda, around Széll Kálmán tér, Déli pályaudvar or the Buda Castle, it's worth a try.
- Edit: if you're in the Városliget, Csalogató kisvendéglő is not far. Very typical local garden restaurant. Go for classic Hungarian dishes. It's not a place where you want to go for overcomplicated food.
- Also very local, it's a lunch place: Kiscsibe Reggeliző & Étterem in Zugló. The thing is that this is not a touristic area at all, but if you happen to be in the district of Zugló, you might well try it. Very popular with locals, very busy in lunchtime. Very simple settings, good local food, big portions.

Nokedlish is so good. I went twice on my last trip and definitely would go again.

EDIT: Ulloi Ut 155, 1091
The langos at Ulloi Ut 155, 1091 from the truck made by the blonde lady with the big eyelashes and tattoos and the slightly older lady with short hair. It’s the only langos that is real. 🩵

Is that in front of the mall? I guess I need to check it. I'm yet to find a langos place that's conveniently open and is not expensive.

1000-1300 forints. In front of a disheveled strip mall. I’ve tried others and nothing compares. There’s always a line. They close at 7 but often run out. It’s like a local secret.

take public transport or a taxi out to náncsi néni vendéglője
the problem that tourists don't quite realize that restaurants that tourists would never go to might get a server who either doesn't speak english or is ill-confident doing so and is aloof. most of the restaurants suggested are decent enough, but they are frequented by tourists as they are easily reached.
if you don't get enough responses then just search this sub as it is asked every other month by tourists

Yeah, Náncsi néni is good. And their legendary túrógombóc is huge, if my memory serves right.

Vakvarjú as mentoined before, they have various locations, in Time Out Market try out the Szaletly one, Két Szerecsen is one of my favourits, you should probably reserve if you go at dinner time. Retro Lángos is touristy but they have good lángos, Gettó Gulyás is also touristy but they have good value-price ratio. Pozsonyi Kisvendéglő and Kiskakukk are in the same area which is a nice districtm you can usually sit outside.:)

for authentic experience you might want to go to a market hall, like Rákóczi téri piac or Lehel piac. they mostly have fresh stuff but some meals too. maybe go to a "csárda", there are many of them!

The best lángos is krumplis lángos; at Szentlélek tér!! Its very local; memories of Roman Empire and Sovyet Empire around :D Pretty authentic! https://maps.app.goo.gl/4nkTJpNN9RMYvQ6y7

Vakvarjú. Literally the best value for price place with hungarian cuisine. There are many of them all around the city
We go there to celebrate.
If you wanna taste kürtőskalács, the bodega on the streets (we eat that and not the fancy filled ones or twice the price ones)
Local experiences are mostly gyros, pizza and burgers. We are just not enough proud for our cuisine yet. For burgers Kandalló. For giant pancakes Palacsintapalota. For pizza Forni di Napoli o Donna Mamma.
