Adventure Book suggestion for an Adult who’s never finished a book.

I’m 25 years old (m) and I think I’ve only come close a few times to finishing a book then I put it down. I understand that’s a problem with me more than the books I choose. I feel ashamed when I think about how I never read. Whenever I try to read self help books I get overwhelmed. So I’m looking for something different.

What’s an easy light read that’s captivating? I spend a lot of time doing sports and out in nature. Thanks in advance :)

Adventure Books that made you feel something you can not quite explain?

Not looking for anything specific genre-wise. Just books that left you with this weird ache or feeling that stuck around for days after finishing

the kind where you close the book and just sit there for minute processing

What completely wreck you emotionally (in a good way)?

I'm looking for books with a similar feel to the Indiana Jones movies. Adventure, exploration, possibly old timey and a touch of romance kinda?

Adventure My husband wants to try reading, I want to find a good book for him to start with. Help!!

I have been reading for years now, and my husband has shown interest in reading but was never serious about it until now. I want to start him off small and work his way to bigger books. He loves movies like Star Wars, Dunkirk, The Lord of the Rings, Westerns, and The Chronicles of Narnia. His favorite trope/plot archetype is 'Based on a true story.' I asked him what types of recs he would like. He answered, Action & adventure, Crime & mystery, Biography & memoir, Horror & supernatural, and Science Fiction. He would not like recs with Christian Fiction, Social Science, Romance, and Romance fantasy ( My fav genre). He likes podcasts, so I think he would like audiobooks as well. He is a gamer and an IT technician if that info helps. I have got him to watch some of my TV shows, which he has been Hot and cold with. Shows like Game of Thrones, he "Just couldn't get into". But he has shown great interest in Dexter and Hannibal. He has read manga and watches anime, so graphic novel recs are also welcome. I know him, and I really think he enjoys this as a hobby, but he just needs the right introduction.

Adventure Suggest me Epic Sprawling Westerns (Westworld, Yellowstone, 1883)

As the title suggests, I would love to read some epic American (or other) westerns. Growing up, the cowboy genre of movies wasn't my favourite; I had only watched Django Unchained, Dances with Wolves and Fistful of Dollars. But when I watched TV shows like Westworld (Season 1), Yellowstone, and 1883, I began wondering about the Frontier. The exploration, creation of the West, and the wars with the Natives.

What book reminds you of the Epic Frontier adventure?

looking for just a good book?

Recently read The Beach by Alex Garland and loved the descriptive feel of the book! I felt like I could easily visit the beach in my mind, and I sometimes struggle with imagining descriptions.

Looking for a new standalone book to read- not too picky about anything, just don’t want any smut or nonfiction. Not too picky about genre either, I’ve tried and enjoyed thriller, sci-fi, fiction, etc! Maybe a good adventure book? Really just want to feel like I’m on a journey with the character and really feel the environment.

If I wanna be real picky, I’d prefer something that isn’t crazy long either! Thank you all!

Adventure Books with cryptids like in Gravity Falls?

I’m looking for books that are adventure-y with cryptids or something similar. I’d like something that has a similar vibe to Gravity Falls and Over the Garden Wall, preferably not sinister or extremely dark but still involving similar themes from the two shows :) hopefully that isn’t too complicated! :D

I’ve tagged as adventure, but I’m also happy with graphic novels/manga or fantasy! Thanks in advance!

Adventure In need of a cant-put-it-down book

Hello friends, In the doomscrolling era im trying to get my old avid reader self back, and i kind of cant. Can anyone give me a book that can help me get my habit of reading back? I used to read romance, thriller, adventure and also harry potter (i remember i ve read the 6th tome in one night). But i dont like fantasy at all (harry potter is an exception because the fantasy kind of makes sense) Thank you all!

Adventure Need specifics

I’m looking for books that are specifically centered around a town or a small group of people. Books like Artemis by Andy weir, mist-born book 1 by Brenden Sanderson, city of ember by Jeanna DuPrau. A small community of people such as a town or city that seems uninteresting. A main character that’s a small time part in everything normally but gets into a bad situation and becomes a main factor in events. I enjoy most genres and go through books like I’m breathing air. My job is truck driving so ima need a LOT of books for the rest of my life.

Adventure Looking for books where everyone underestimated the MC

I’m looking for a book (preferably fantasy) where the MC starts out being underestimated or overlooked by the people around them (friends, classmates, family, etc). People think they already know exactly who the MC is and don’t see them as especially capable, important, or worthy of much respect.

Then the MC leaves that life (not necessarily willingly) and becomes part of a dangerous, powerful, hidden, or elite world. Over time, they learn how to survive there, understand the people and the rules, and build connections with influential or even terrifying individuals.

The most important part for me is the reunion. I want the moment when people from the old life realize the MC is deeply connected to figures they themselves fear or admire.

I’m looking for scenes where these powerful individuals treat the MC with familiarity, trust, loyalty, protectiveness, or genuine respect, leaving the old friends/family shocked, wondering how the MC even knows them.

The MC shouldn’t necessarily feel like a completely different person. Ideally, the capability was always there, people just never noticed it before. But now the contrast is impossible to ignore because the MC clearly belongs in a world that the others can barely comprehend.

I especially want that “oh sh\*t” realization moment to hit hard. The feeling that the person they casually underestimated is now someone connected to dangerous and powerful people, maybe even someone dangerous themselves.

I want the reunion and the shift in perception to feel like a major emotional payoff in the story, not just a quick reveal scene.

Bonus points if they later become dependent on him/her.

Adventure Swashbuckling Adventure

I’ve recently been in the mood for a wild ride adventure story. I’ve never read anything like it, but have been yearning for a book like this. I’m looking for… The Mummy meets, Uncharted meets, Indiana Jones meets, Tomb Raider. Something that’s a summer adventure with light to medium romance (I don’t really want it to be the entire plot, but don’t mind a sprinkle of it). Good with modern or historical fiction setting, open to a male or female protagonist, and doesn’t have to be… but I don’t mind if it’s in the LGBTQ+ genre. I would love to hear your suggestions!

Adventure Kaiju action audiobook for my commute

I have a 60 minute commute every day, but I'm the one driving so I can't focus completely on the book. It must be something comic book like - Project Hail Mary or The Muderbot series level of complexity -, in audiobook format. It would be cool if it had action involved.

I'm finishing Worm by Wildbow (no spoilers, please, I already feel like an orphan) and I tried giving a chance to Kaiju Battle Surgeon based on the title but it's too gore and trauma oriented even for the Worm reader in me. That got me in a mood for a Kaiju or Colossus like book but something lighthearted - more Pacific Rim, less Godzilla Minus One.

I'm sure such a book is out there and someone is probably reading this and thinking: "Man, this guy is practically describing my favorite read from last year" but since I had no other way to find something like this on my own, I came to you to ask for help.

Adventure Books for a 60yo who has barely ever read in their lives but enjoyed Treasure Island?

Marked it as adventure but doesn't necessarily have to be the same genre.

She recently finished Treasure Island in about ~two weeks. I was kind of surprised by how fast she read it, she didn't read everyday but every time I saw it the bookmark would be a good chunk ahead.

Then I gave her Murder on the Orient Express next to see if she would enjoy murder mysteries, but...she says she's liking it but it's been a month and she's barely 30 pages in.

So I'm wondering if I should try giving her other book with a similar vibe/writing to Treasure Island. Maybe Anne of Green Gables?

Adventure What's the best James Bond book in your opinion?

Upvotes

Thinking of getting the new 007 game on PS5 and want to get nicely immersed in that world first!

It may be worth mentioning Casino Royale was always my favourite film. But I'm up for any vibe really, so what book (to you) best encapsulates Bond?

Shout out my reading gamers!

Adventure Grungy, rock n roll adventures?

I remember when I was younger I read a book called Fat Kid Rules the World and I was obsessed with it. I was hoping to find a feel-good, grungy, rock n roll kinda story with adult characters instead of a teenage male lead. I have one on my reading list (Hot Wax), but I won't be getting to it for a minute so I wanted to see what recommendations I could gather up until then.

Adventure A book for a 16 year-old who hates being on her phone

This last days I've been on my phone for hours and I hate that it's difficult to stop scrolling. I'm looking for something I can't find, maybe it's a new perspective or a meaningful something. I want to start reading again. It's been a while since I last did. I would like a book about friendship, a group of friends who just enjoy life together. I can stand a little romance too hahaha I just need a heart warming book

Adventure Historical adventure books

I've read, the Robert Langdon series, and Recovery agent series and want something along those lines, similar to lora Croft, uncharted and national treasure. I want something historical with either treasure or something like it, with a smart main character. Preferably a series but open to anything.

Adventure Classic adventures and/or love letters to them.

The Jules Vernes, Treasure Islands, and Musketeers of Monte Cristo are great and I welcome any recommendation you may have but I'm especially interested in more recent deeper-cut romps in the vein of The Princess Bride, Indiana Jones, The Mummy, and pretty much anything written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. They seem to have stronger themes and structure. I love that!

I enjoy a good swashbuckler but I hesitate to use the term because it's often mistaken as strictly pirates. To me it means it just has more of a romantic and roguish tone than your standard adventure...and swords.

Lots of swords.

Recently i was starting to read Murakama's book and i gotta say i love his book so i was looking toward other authors to read. Im searching a book whit good narrative but that its not heavy to read, i don't want to read books whit heavy atmosphere like 1984, Blood meridian, letter from aun unknow woman (i know those are Occidental's books but i wanted to give and example) but rather something simple, even funny if necessary.

Adventure I want to capture that feeling again

Hey everyone ! First time posting here 😁

When I was in middle school, I (26 M today) discovered the Percy Jackson series, and it helped me through a really tough time back then. I read Harry Potter before, and loved it but this felt different.

First of all because I felt like the characters in PJO weren’t « movie children ». The growing pains of adolescence weren’t kind to me and I found comfort in reading about stuff I could relate to. Secondly, in that series, the fantasy is way more intertwined with our day to day world than in HP for example.

I like the idea that fantasy is around us, just hiding around. When things feel bleak or sad, it’s nice to imagine having a bit of magic just around the corner. So yeah, I love that series and going through it again last summer now that I’m grown up was something I kinda needed right now.

I was wondering if you had recommendations for other adventure books or series with that trope of fantasy secretly intertwined with the real world, but for a more adult audience. By that I don’t mean necessarily edgy or violent (actually kind of the contrary, I like hopecore stuff), but with protagonists that have problems and lives that feel more relatable as an adult.

I think I simply want an way to keep feeling like there’s some whimsy hidden around, to believe that this hopeful day dreaming mood isn’t bound to childhood.

Thanks in advance, take care !

TL;DR: looking for a series that mixes modern world with fantasy/magic with protagonists with adult issues, not kids or teenagers.
