Fiction Books about death and dying?

6 Upvotes

I recently went through a major and traumatic loss and I'm doing my best to keep on going. After that experience I sort of feel like I know even less about death than I did before and I have a huge urge to explore this topic.

One thing I am enjoying at the moment is the TV show Six Feet Under and I would like to read something perhaps similar to it when it comes to themes it discusses.

I don't want any self help books and please no religious texts. If you do want to recommend something from the non-fiction genre, I am interested in the philosophical, metaphysical and perhaps even spiritual side of the discussion.

Romance Looking for absolute SMUT NSFW

0 Upvotes

Been trying to read more to better my own writing. A book I’ve recently read is The Pool Boy by Nikki Sloan and am wondering if there’s anything similar. I’m particularly interested in age gap novels where the woman is older.

Other Long post but any books to satisfy my extremely picky and crazy genre selection for my ADHD self

1 Upvotes

Like: Magic but like strong magic not like princess power magic, plants, cheesy romance and decent not over the top smut, easy reads, character development who might be a little bit problematic, dialogue or monologue driven, fast paced, small town vibes, Halloween or fall esque, regency or Victorian era, yearning, bakingetc.

dislike: faeries, smut that is over the top and borderline corn, slow pacing, outright murder or anything real and depressing (unless it’s like Divergent or Fourth Wing where it’s just like fighting), space, pirates, no funerals or dead bodies, mysteries (unless done right), no sally rooney, no Colleen hoover, nothing hildebrand, etc..

books I’ve liked:

- The Catcher in the Rye

- Fahrenheit 451

- Elatsoe

- Anne of Green Gables

- The City of Ghost trilogy

- Pride and Prejudice

- The Outsiders

- To Kill a Mockingbird

- The Nevermoor series

- The Sisters of Versailles

- North Woods

etc.

Shows I’ve liked:

- Bridgerton

- The Lady’s Companion

- Hollywood

- Bon Appetit My Majesty

- The Princess Royal

- Yellowstone 1884 and 1924

- Alchemy of Souls

- Apothecary Diaries

- Spinning out

- Never have I ever

- Lucifer

- The Crown

- The Queens Gambit

- Anne with an E

Romance Gothic romance?

4 Upvotes

I'm looking for a gothic romance with a dark, atmospheric setting. Old manors, stormy/rainy weather, a mysterious, melancholy feel…the likes of that.

I’d love emotionally complex characters. Slow burn romance maybe. A moody, broody, read-on-a-rainy-day type of book.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Fiction 1970s Scotlands

1 Upvotes

I'm looking for a book set in 1970s Scotland in an academic setting, preferably a boarding school. As I am writing a book set during that time, I would like to know more about what Scotland and the education system were like for students.

Edit: Ignore the typo in the title, there's only one Scotland...

Adventure A book series where the main character is an adventure seeker/adventurer?

1 Upvotes

Someone who does adventuring full-time. Like Indiana Jones vibes. Doesn't have to be discovering lost relics, just someone who travels full-time, a thrill seeker, knows their way around being in the wild. Very confident. Likes to try everything, go to new places.

I like reading about these types because I look up to them and they motivate me to keep going.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Looking for a book for my 16F sister’s birthday

1 Upvotes

My sister’s birthday is coming up. Actually, it was yesterday. We’ve been somewhat estranged for the last 8 years or so. (I was kicked out by our parents. And I’m 10 years older than her. For the most part, not important.) We talk on and off and I want to send her a couple of books she’ll enjoy.

She’s always been a big fan of Twilight. She’s talked to me (in somewhat obscenely graphic detail) about some ā€œbooktokā€ Dark Romance novels that she’s read. I don’t really feel comfortable buying her smut (respectfully). I’m already planning on buying her Life and Death. I’m considering The Host.

Also, she is mixed race. I love her (and basically raised her), but we do technically have different fathers. I’d love to be able to buy her something where she can see herself reflected in the protagonist. I know the movie Home was ragged on, but my fondest memory of her is when she pointed at Home’s protagonist and said ā€œ*my name*, her hair is like mine!ā€

I know that she would also appreciate knowing more about me and would (I’m pretty sure) enjoy if I sent her something that reflected my taste. The issue, though, is that I’ve always been interested in more, uh, cerebral works. I’ve claimed Faulkner and Joyce as my favorite writers since I was her age. I’m in the process of getting a House of Leaves tattoo. I really don’t particularly care for romance in my novels. I don’t view it as trashy or anything like that, it just doesn’t really interest me. I still respect the hell out of all of you that — I can guarantee — read more often and more passionately than myself.

I have been getting into cyberpunk and old school sci fi novels. My favorites (that I think she might enjoy) would be Neuromancer and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I’ve heard Neuromancer can be difficult to read, but it is a lot *spicier* than HGttG.

Do you lovely people have any recommendations for what I can send her? I really appreciate any advice you all can give me ā¤ļø

Children/YA Book suggestions for a 10 year old girl (reluctant reader)

1 Upvotes

I’ve gone through and read several suggestions for 10 year olds who LOVE to read. My daughter is such a picky reader and hates reading. We’re trying to do 10 minutes of silent reading together before bed, then I’ll read aloud to her a different book(which she loves). I’m thinking she’s a little behind with reading although her teacher didn’t seem too concerned when I brought this up to her. She has read graphic novels but no longer into them. I just think the books that she’s tried are a bit too advanced for her so I’m trying to find a balance of an easy read but not too ā€œyoungā€.
I’ve read aloud: Percy Jackson series, The Land of Stories series, wayside school books, Narnia series…

Doesn’t like: Harry Potter or any magical books. Nothing scary.

Likes: ā€œadventureā€

Can be female/male MC.

Horror Summerween horror recs?

1 Upvotes

I'm looking for books that give "summerween" vibes. Spooky/scary, but horror. Think Friday the 13th or Cabin in the Woods, but book form. Doesn't have to be a slasher, though. Paranormal, slasher, stalker, any of it is fine. Standalone or series is also fine.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Books for a manga lover

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I typically read a lot of manga (like MMA fighting/finding yourself manga). The ones I've greatly enjoyed are Berserk, Vagabond, Tough, Shamo, Hajime no Ippo, etc.

I want to get into more serious reading and actually read some books.

Does anyone have suggestions of books that are in a similar in story telling/theme like these ones? Open to anything fiction/non-fiction.

Thanks a ton!

Sci-Fi/Fantasy I need a life changing Fantasy Romance book

3 Upvotes

I used to love romantasy books, and I still do, but I havent't read one that really shook me to my core in a while.

I like world building and great romance, with a nice pace.

My favourite romantasy series is The Folf Of The Air, it has my perfect fantasy to romance ratio and tropes. But while I want something with that balance I don't want that same mortal girl stuck on faerie world thing that lots of books have.

I want an amazing magical world building with a fantastical whirlwind romance.

It can also be sci-fi.

If it's a series, one that is finished.

Think LOTR with Pride and Prejudice with Alice's Theme from the Alice in Wonderland soundtrack.

My do nots:

I do not like ACOTAR;
I do not like Red Queen;
I hate love triangles;
I don't want an overhyped booktok recommendation (unless it's ACTUALLY good);

What I do love:

Enemies-to-lovers;
Rivals-to-lovers;
Found family;
Ensemble cast;
Good plot twist;
Morally Grey Characters;
Slow burn;

Books I like:

The Folk of The Air
Six of Crows
Emily Wilde
Divine Rivals
Want
The Lunar Chronicles

I hope this exists, and that my wishes aren't too crazy. Thank you in advance.

Mystery/Thriller I need a new book

1 Upvotes

Hey guys,

First time posting on Reddit but I need a book recommendation that will keep me hooked from the first chapter. I have grown to love longer books because I feel the world building and emotional impact in the plot is only amplified. Give me some good ones! Below are the only books I have rated 5 stars via Goodreads. My rating system is also below.

Later - Stephen King
Dark matter - Blake Crouch
Pines #1 - Blake crouch
No country for old men - Cormac McCarthy
The drawing of the three - Stephen King
Wizard and Glass - Stephen King
The Stand - Stephen King

Rating System

āļøāļøāļøāļøāļø = A book that will stick with me for life, either due to my own personal connection with the story OR objectively an excellent book that hits all the markers for what is objectively great novel/story. These ratings are not taken lightly.

āļøāļøāļøāļø = A book that I thought was AMAZING, yet had some minor flaws that kept it from having a a deep impact on me, either emotionally, intellectually, or creatively. Would highly recommend these books based on the person I am recommending them to.

āļøāļøāļø = A book that is okay…either I had feelings it was a slog to get through and or it was a fast, popcorn read, but lacked the depth I am looking for in a 4 or 5 star novel. Would recommend depending on situation.

āļøāļø = A book that comes to my mind as BLAHHH. Either I felt the author didn’t put in the work or it is just not making me feel the ways a book should. No character connection, below average plot, too bloated, too many unnecessary words, etc. Would not recommend.

āļø = A book that completely turned me off and I most likely DNF’d at around 15%. This could be do to terrible writing, plot, or Trojan Horse of a heavy political message wrapped in a novel trying to check off boxes. A book that does not feel natural and takes me out of it completely.

Other Sci-fi/Thriller with heavy character focus

1 Upvotes

i’m trying to get back into reading, but i’m having trouble finding anything that really ā€œfitsā€ lately, you know?

i want something serious with high stakes (i’m not afraid of horror), but still with happy moments to break up the tension and a heavy focus on characters that the reader falls in love with.

i love sci-fi and thriller/horror mostly

series are cool too!

not really a fan of romance but if you’ve got a good suggestion of it then that’s great too, i really just want to get back into reading

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Books that could help with sleep anxiety

4 Upvotes

Hi, I’m building a list to help me get back into reading and I have another specific request. I’d love some recommendations for books that would be good to read before bed and generally just make me feel safe without being boring.

I sometimes struggle with sleep anxiety and paranoia, which means I can’t enjoy my favourite genres before bed (sci-fi, supernatural, etc.) because any fear or suspense can keep me up all night. That being said, I find most contemporary stories are too real (for lack of a better term) and romance on its own doesn’t keep my attention, so I’m looking for something different enough from reality to be interesting, without the usual high stakes that come with most other genres. I don’t want to worry about sudden attacks or a general feeling that the main characters aren’t ā€œsafeā€ most of the time (of course it can have some drama at points, for the sake of the story)

Bonus points if there’s anything about sleep within the story, or characters with similar sleep issues to me. It would be really nice to find a story that makes me WANT to sleep, but I know that might be too much to ask

Thanks in advance!

Fiction Need an elite recommendation to get me back into reading

10 Upvotes

This is my first post here! I used to read all the time back in high school, like 50 books a year, but now as a grizzled old man at the age of 24 I’ve fallen completely out of the habit. I’ve read maybe five books total in the last five years, and I want to try something new with the goal of reigniting my passion. I’m specifically interested in finding a modern, fictional novel with a bit of edge…drugs, sex, profanity of course! I need something to keep me interested lol. I like horror but I’m not specifically looking for that. I would also love to find something on the shorter side…definitely not a series or like 500+ pages. Any help?

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Fantasy/World-building Non-Fiction Rec

1 Upvotes

Hello !

I recently came across The Grammar of Fantasy by Gianni Rodari lately, and I feel like it would make a great birthday present for my best friend - it does seem to be quite focused on fairytales or children’s stories (from what I could see flicking through). My question is if anyone has read it - would it be suitable for someone who likes writing as a hobby, and especially enjoys the world-building aspect of reading - or if there’s anything similar that may be appropriate?

She also likes sci-fi if there’s anything that falls under that too!!

Thanks!

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Books with deep and unique worldbuilding

No particular genre, just anything with lore that is unique and well constructed
