Mystery/Thriller Non-popcorn thrillers

Hello! So I’m looking for thriller recommendations that have a bit of depth to the them as I feel like a lot of the ones I’ve read recently are very basic, run of the mill popcorn thrillers. Some recent authors I’ve read: Claire Douglas, Claire Mackintosh, Alice Feeney, Mary Kubika, Caleb Stephens, which are all averaging around 2.5/3 stars for me. I’m currently reading Holly Jackson’s adult debut ‘not quite dead yet’ but her style of writing still gives YA to me. Thanks in advance!

If you want thrillers with a bit more substance, I'd look at Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane, Mystic River, The Secret History by Donna Tartt, and The Talented Mr. Ripley. They all have the suspense, but there's a lot more going on beneath the surface than the typical twist-driven thriller. A Night to Forget is another one I'd throw in if you enjoy psychological tension and character-driven mystery.

This is such a good list!!! Also adding a few more classics:

Red Dragon and Silence of The Lambs by Thomas Harris

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

Rebecca and Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier

All of Gillian Flynn’s books

Where Are The Children by Mary Higgins Clark

Smilla’s Sense of Snow by Peter Hoeg

Note on Tana French, just as an alternate opinion: I was told by numerous people I would love her books. I read The Likeness. It remains one of the dumbest plots I have ever encountered and I won’t read another of her books since.
