Leather Repair Book of Common Prayer Repair

Good afternoon! I recently purchased a used, leather bound Book of Common Prayer as a gift to myself for my confirmation. The inside is in pristine condition, but she appears to be well loved.

I dont mind the distressed look, but this is something I plan to use daily and the leather is unfortunately very fragile, with small pieces coming off every time it is used.

Is there a good way for me to protect the remaining leather and prevent further damage? Open to any suggestions.

The easiest thing would be to put a book cover on it. A clear one would leave the spine lettering visible. People often put covers on Bibles.

Wondering how old the book might be? Is it some sort of faux leather? It appears to be a very thin layer that is failing. If it is authentic leather there may be a moisturizing or softening agent/treatment you could apply. Search for how to treat or repair old cracking leather. You might find a good treatment that would protect and preserve it. If it’s some sort of pleather or faux product, it might be best to look for a replacement volume.

That’s almost certainly pleather. They all do exactly this after a while and start shedding little bits of plastic all over the place.

I hope OP didn’t get scammed on the “leather” book.

My thoughts as well. That woven backing gives it away!
