Discussion Favorite Rack Gear?

I recently made a post asking for your favorite rack gear and understandably it was a bit confusing because I did not clearly communicate my goals. You did however send me some really fun ideas that I will explore.

Clarification:

I have a full digital mixing and mastering workflow that will out perform most analog gear within my budget.

However, im looking to add to my workflow with some gear that can add some analog character to my recordings. Im specifically looking for some more affordable hear that I can apply when recording... and then ill run it through my full digital process.

Question:

Given my use case, do you have any recommendations for gear that can add some color, saturation, maybe even be a bit experimental to add inspiration and some analog character into my mixing process?

Hear me out: I love this fun single rack unit made by ART called the TPS II. Stereo preamp with a dial for different settings. They're dirt cheap, and at the advice of a friend, I switched out the cheapo 12AX7 preamp tube for a nice mullard tube, and I think it has improved the tone substantially. Nevertheless, I will track through it, use it as an insert, whatever. It's just allot of fun to turn the dial! For the price, it will put something in your rack to have fun with, and I have more expensive preamps that I don't even use as much! Also, it's got combo jack inputs on the front, so no routing necessary, just slam a cable right into the front and go to town. I've been singing the praises of this funny rack for years.

I've got a couple of those things....they are pretty great considering the price. Definite character unit.
