General Question What’s the deal with all the black Greeks renouncing their Greek life in the name of Jesus?
I’m black myself but I can’t seem to get a straight answer from the few older Greeks in my life. Im not about that Greek life or to deep into the church like that. What I’ve been seeing is people who were hardcore Kappas, AKAs, and Deltas just “reform“ themselves to thier faith but renouncing their Greek life all of a sudden. What is going on in the black church that’s causing this?
Edit: Thanks for the help, I seem to be getting some hostility now which isn’t my intention. I have diagnosed ADHD and I hyper focus on things I don’t understand until I understand them. I legit wasn’t understanding the whole picture with this subject and that’s why I came here to ask.

If you as you claim have been seeing people who were hardcore Kappas, AKAs, and Deltas and greeks just "reform" themselves to their faith then you have the answer. I've seen the same and they always explain why so what exactly is your question?
What is going on in the black church that’s causing this?
You don't sound like someone that goes to church but can you tell me why you think the black church is causing this?

Valid questions.
The reason why I’m asking is that I was married into a very very religious and a very very greek family. The fact that my brother in law chose not to pledge was an extremely big deal. So seeing the family members that have been going to church twice a week for decades while wearing their colors and going to conventions all of a sudden say Greek life is evil is concerning. I was wondering what changed and I couldn’t get a satisfying answer to explain the huge shift.
The reason why I’m making an assumption about it being a black church thing is because maybe it’s a big coincidence but only people in my family (and from what I gather online) that’s now renouncing and bashing all happen to attend different black nondenominational churches in different states across the country.
The family members who don’t attend church or get wrapped up into the church culture are still doing their Greek stuff.
I mean no disrespect and I hope I answered your questions without sounding douchey.

If someone told me that they'd stopped doing something because they'd found it to be evil that'd be a satisfying answer for me. Why would I not be satisfied that someone had stopped doing something evil? Or do you not know what evil is? Are you angry that they'd stopped? If you're not interested in their religion then you're not interested in why they'd stop. In what way did them stopping that which they felt was evil affect you?
but only people in my family (and from what I gather online) that’s now renouncing and bashing all happen to attend different black nondenominational churches in different states across the country.
Considering that which continues to be the history in America which church do you expect them to attend? Have you ever attended any white churches?

Honestly I appreciate the conversation but I don’t think I can give you an answer you are satisfied with since I’ve explained why I’m here asking my question.
So I wish you a wonderful day and I hope you achieve whatever goal you are shooting for today 🤘🏾.

Here is what started it all...
I'm not in Greek life, but my wife went grad but she's not active.
Christians are supposed to not honor anything higher than Jesus Christ. That can mean things that are perfectly fine to love, like your family and career. The person in the video I linked feels her line had blood letting style commitments that are clearly against basic Christianity principals. I know a lot of Black Greeks, and not one of them are bad people. But if bad people became Greek, (or cops, or pastors, or priest or teachers...), they will use their organization to facilitate their wrong doings. It's as simple as that! 🤷♂️
I never understood how grown people get so ingrained in identifying with group associations. I didn't fall for group think in the military, on the street or in college, and I think those that do either have a lack of unity in their upbringing or they need a group to elevate them because they simply can't stand on their own.

I appreciate this very very much. I also never understood it but I know that’s in part how my early childhood and teen years were.

Bet! I guess the reason why I’m asking in general because it’s not just college age that I’m seeing this from. Hell my mother in law that’s been Pink and Green since the 80s renounced the AKAs out of nowhere and I tried talking to her and she just said they are no longer Christian like. Which is confusing to me. I’ve seen other adults well out of college years doing the same.
I appreciate the response. Also if your username is accurate you are taller than me 🤣🤣🤣. Stay safe and have a wonderful day 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾

Looks like she gave you your answer. If you’re still confused you can google specific reddit subs devoted to Greek life.

True but she didn’t elaborate on how.
You’re right though I could go to those subs, I was just worried about it being a touchy subject.

Someone (maybe a Christian influencer) made a video saying that there’s some Greek hazing process that involves…selling your soul or signing a contract with the devil…or that the initiation process has something to do with greek gods….or something like that.
And people have had to come out and say it’s a lie. But apparently some people believed it without a shred of evidence. My best friend’s sister asked my best friend if she’d done anything in the initiation process. And my friend emphatically stated “no”. But there was a back-and-forth where her sister truly believed this lie.
I’m not sure where it started, but I believe it’s related to this. Also, Christians find something to be offended by every few weeks so…now it’s Greek life.

…….this sounds so silly to the point where I know you are telling the truth. Beyonce making people worship the devil via illuminati and now greeks are making their pledges sell their souls to Greek gods? Why is everything black people do outside of the church is evil? Sheeeesh we can’t fun at all can we?
Thanks for this information! I can now do some better research.

Why are you doing some more research? It sounds like you got the answer you've come here for.

u/Aggressive_Noise6426 7h ago
Because I have ADHD and I hyper focus on things I don’t understand until I understand them. I got the answer but I don’t understand the whole picture yet if that makes sense.
I can atleast find the origin of the rumor or something.

Yall are mad aggressive in this thread….like? There’s always layers of understanding with any answer. Let people go deep into answers even if you don’t.

Now that I think of it, I think it may have actually been a pastor - one that has snippets of their sermons on social media. There’s a few that are constantly attacking anything associated with Gen z or anything that’s popular.

Damn dude. I’m just trying to get some clarification on why people I know who loved something for so long is now all of sudden saying the thing they loved is evil. Chill out my dude.
Edit: bruh is such a lame. Gonna report me for suicide watch then delete his comment.

u/Superb_Ant_3741 ☑️Revolutionary 8h ago
And I just asked you a question. Suggesting that you just ask her is a reasonable and logical comment. I was polite to you and now you’re being needlessly rude. You chill out.

u/MerumazingGirl 7h ago
Do you know if it was him who reported you or are you making a baseless accusation? I've seen Superb-ant in this sub most of the time and I don't even think they would waste their time to do this lol.

I think the top comment said it very well. It’s like people have this sudden epiphany that they’re placing something above Christ and it triggers this knee jerk heel turn in them. But you see it in so many situations with Black people outside of greek life too. There’s this one content creator I would watch who’d make these funny skits judging people’s food they’d bring to potlucks. One day, she did a complete 180, disavowing her old content because she believed it was “leading her away from Christ.”
It’s sad and kind of scary to me because it feels like as soon as these people start feeling happy and confident, it terrified them and they have to prostrate themselves before their religion
