It's literally about I pirate that is looking for treasure that he'll probably never find. Why do people like this series so much. (to clarify, I'm asking this as a genuine question)

because the creators make more money by dragging the show out to an outrageous length through manga/anime, since the fanbase is already so large there's no point not to. Just keep making the bread.

If the fanbase dies down (which is unlikely honestly, since it has a huge following) then maybe it ends, but I doubt it.

he's not the only guy getting profiting from this, One Piece is a brand/franchise and there's people on the bottom who are getting paid and will want to continue to get paid long after the manga is completed as long as there is still interest.

Yeah the dude sacrifices his health, family life, social life and works up-to 18 hours per day while still putting out top-quality chapters just for the money. It has gotten so bad that Shonen Jump makes him get breaks every 3-4 weeks so that he doesn't die from a stroke or something while working. Oda has also made many hints that One Piece will be ending soon, however the fan-base is only growing bigger and bigger.

I don't believe so. One Piece is near the beggining of it's end-game. Granted that end-game could be 200 chapters. I think that after Wano ends this are going to go wild with the WG, BB and Shanks.
