Love this anime, but the Yuriko favoritism and double-standard is impossible to unsee once you notice it. Based on the show's tone, I predicted this fight would play out one of two ways: Yuriko brutally pummels Tojima and wins, or Tojima wins with his strength but in a restrained manner (holds back, can't land clean hits, anything to dial back brutalizing Tackle). Both happened, with Yuriko as the winner. Violence towards everyone on this show including Yukarisu is dialed up to like 8 or 9, but towards Tackle it's dialed way down to like a 3.
And now this fight, where she took a mere three solid hits: a kick drawn at an angle to avoid being shown graphically connecting, a slam to the ground (the most effective hit), and a punch she entirely tanked and countered with a more vicious attack. Everything else was glancing blows, blocks, and literal air. Minimal or no blood. In contrast, they animated Tojima taking an insane amount of extremely graphic damage: punches and slams to the head, tons of blood literally gushing out of his mask. The fight was designed to show Tackle "struggling" but not actually being hurt too graphically. Mitsuba vs. Ichiyo was evenly violent and bloody, which leads to my next point. I'm 100% confident Mitsuba vs. Yuriko will again go soft on any graphic violence directed at Yuriko. We already see it in the preview for TACKLE IS THE STRONGEST: he lands a relatively tame takedown, while she punches his face hard and draws a ton of blood.
I'm fine with Yuriko winning the tourney -- that's not my issue. I just wish they wouldn't shy away from treating her more like the rest of the gang (like Yukarisu!) when it comes to fighting and taking punishment. When they fought the kaijin, Tojima took a really nasty hit that smashed him into the ground and a wall, and Ichiyo nearly got his head smashed in three times and got rescued twice. Yuriko was literally in the monster's grasp and... he just casually tossed her to the ground, almost gently. She either doesn't get hit or takes pretty light damage when something actually connects compared to literally anyone else on the show. She has weird plot armor and gets the kid gloves treatment. It's unfortunate and I expect this to persist if what I read is true that Yuriko is the mangaka's clear favorite and depicted as the best hero of the group. That's a little weird for a series called Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider.
