I'm frustrated that this episode got such a short end of the stick production quality wise.

The entire show clearly had a limited budget and I adjusted my expectations, but this is one of the most critical episodes and it really felt like the most low budget one we've had since episode 3.

The seal wasn't made to look terrifying at all, the underwater scenes with shirori's half destroyed body were rushed through, the storyboarding was very plain more then normal, with outright off perspective on backgrounds in some shots, Shirori's voice in her true form not having any sort of editing or processing to it, etc.

it's a shame.

The biggest issue though is the lack of adapting the bonus chapter about her hair pin. I REALLY hope that /u/Syokhan and /u/alan_14 are correct that it'll happen next episode due to the OP scene, because I think it's critical.

EDIT:

Something I forgot (but was reminded by /u/ rayfish5 's comment) to mention that I really liked that the anime did here was how the final shot of Shiori wistfully looking up with a tree's shadow over her face, has the shadow almost give an illusion of her face being half transformed into fish scales.

The manga doesn't do it but if intentional, the anime handling the shadows from that panel thar way is really fun/neat

Shirori's voice in her true form not having any sort of editing or processing to it, etc.

This was also weird to me because the first time we hear her voice in her true form at the training camp it was edited. Miko's fox voice is edited, the yokai in episode 1 was edited, even the little bugs. Yet here at the beach talking to Hinako, there were no voice adjustments. Not sure of the reason behind it but I wish they had done more with it.

Right, that's why it stood out to me

My only guess for why they didn't do processing is that maybe they interpreted the dialog as being human form Shiori narrating the dialog back to Miko?

That or I guess maybe a budget thing, since there's so much dialog here
