Now this is the episode I have been the most excited about, and they nailed it. Its pays off all of the hints the show has been building up on Shiori, and why she cares about Hinako so much. Imagine you spent your whole life feeling like you lived in a different world from everyone else. The connections that come so easily for others might as well be a foreign language to you. After decades of being alone you felt convinced that you're just not meant to be with others. You keep telling yourself that because it's the only way to feel okay.

Until you happen to meet a little girl who doesn't see you as some unknowable monster. Your form would scare away most, but for some reason this girl decides to feed you and call you beautiful. She shines so bright that she cuts all the way through to the deep abyss where you guard your heart. In the grand scale of things you can say that it doesn't matter. What's one small gesture compared to decades solitary confinement in the ocean. Yet that's what makes her kindness burn so bright.

Shiori really only knew small Hinako for a few short days, but that little amount of time changed her for good. How could she not pay back the first person who truly saw her? I was a mess watching thier first meeting, and I just love how it shows how much of an impact "mundane" kindness can have. Hinako is alive because she decided to feed a strange fish woman her mom's omelette while Shiori wants to understand human connection despite being from a different world.

This is why I'm very optimistic about the story despite how dark it can be because I believe little Hinako's good deed will eventually come back to save her own life now through Shiori.

Lastly there's quite a few callbacks with my favorite two being Hinako mom's omelette which Miko taught Hinako to make along with the parallel of little Hinako calling Shiori beautiful because she looks like the ocean and Shiori comforting Hinako about her scars.

This is my favorite episode so far, and it won me over completely to Shiori.

I already tagged you on it, but I left my own massive comment examining the themes here from my own perspective in a reply of mine here, in case anybody is interested.
